Ll .1 CLASS HISTORY Our class of forty-nine industrious pupils entered high school in the fall of 1950. During the Freshman year our class officers were: President, Colene Phelps, Vice-President, Bud Riden- hour, Secretary, Marlene Canupp, and Treasurer, Jim Holt. This year two of our girls made the basketball team, Marlene Canupp and Ellen Tatum. Two of our boys made the football team: Jim Osborne and Bud Ridenhour. Annette Stiller became a cheerleader. Eleven of our pupils either got married, moved from Cooleemee, entered the service, or began industrial work. At the end of the term, only forty of the original pupils remained. We re-assembled in the fall of 1951 and began our work as Sophomores. Our officers were: President, Bud Ridenhour, Vice-President, Annette Stiller, Secretary1Treasurer, Jim Holt. Again we were represented in basketball by Rilla Nichols, Ellen Tatum and Marlene Canupp, in football by Jim Osborne, Eugene Cornat- zer, Bob Eudy and Bud Ridenhour, and in basketball by Bucl Ridenhour and Eugene Cornatzer. Annette Stiller was again cheerleader. Five of our former teachers had gone, but six new members were added to the faculty. During this term we lost nine more of our companions, reducingour number to thirty-nine. Thus destiny was sifting our constituency in order that only the best might remain. Vocation days passed and we came back for our third year in high school--Juniors. Our officers were: President, Bud Ridenhour, Vice-President, Margie Wagner, Secretary, Marlene Canupp, Treasurer, Linda Bivens. This year we were represented in football by Jim Osborne, Jack Athey, Jim Holt, Terry Dedmon, Al- vin Shaver, Eugene Cornatzer and Bud Ridenhour, in baseball by Jim Holt, Jim Osborne, Bud Ridenhour, and in girl's basketball by Marlene Canupp and Rilla Nichols. Cheerleaders were: Linda Bivens, Roberta Shepherd and Margie Wagner. We had two new instructors. We started with forty members in our class, three of whom, left after marrying, one went to another school, and one entered service. This left only thiry-four faithful ones who were determined to enjoy the fruits of Senior dignity. The outstanding social event of our Junior year was the Junior-Senior Banquet. The Gay Nineties theme was used throughout the program which was given at the Robert E. Lee Hotel in Winston-Salem, on April tenth. August, 1953, came--the time to which we had looked forward with delightful anticipation---Our Senior Year. The roll call showed only twenty-nine of the forty-nine who had started with us. Our officers were: President, Terry Dedmon,Vice-President, Bob Shore, Secretary, Mary Lynn McClannon, Treasurer, Don Daniels. The Seniors took part in the following sports: girl's basketball, Marlene Canupp and Rilla Nichols. Foot- ball, Alvin Shaver, Jim Osborne, Eugene Cornatzer, Bud Ridenhour, Terry Dedmon, Don Daniels, Jim Holt, Jack Athey and Norman Bowles, and in basketball, Bud Ridenhour, Eugene Cornatzer, Jim Osborne and Alvin Shaver. We are looking forward to our trip to Washington, the Junior-Senior Banquet, at which we will be the honored guests, the Senior Play, and the greatest event of all--our Commencement Exercises. We can hardly realize that it is almost the close of our so-iourn through high school. a class we are about to embark upon the Great Sea of Life. It matters not where we go nor what our vocations may be, we shall always remember the dear class of 54, Cooleemee High School. CLASS MOTTO Don't stare up the steps, but step up the stairs. SENIOR PRAYER Dear Lord: We pause this day filled full of plans To thank Thee for Thy care. You've given us busy, healthful lives And joy beyond compare. We pray that all our teachers may, Through-out each coming year, Think of us and with a smile, Hold memories fond and dear. Rilla Lowder HISTOR IAN Neglected friends and tasks have we To get more fun from living, We now must settle down and learn The blessed art of giving. We pray that in the future we May be both strong and ready. The world has iobs that must be done By folks whose wills are steady. May we in years that are to come Look to Thee for our help. Tho we may falter, still we know Thy promise will be kept. Roberta Shepherd , POETESS
