CLASS HISTCRY On an eventful day in September, 1945, forty-four supposedly worldly Freshmen entered the portals of Coolee- mee High School to spend some of the happiest years of our lives. The girls went to Miss Purcell's room, where we had to resist the temptation of playing with the typewriters that were reserved for the Juniors and Seniors. The boys went to Mrs. Bostls room where they acquired as much knowledge in solving the problems of life as in working Math problems, Mrs. Moody also exercised great power in developing our minds which evidently needed much training. Class officers for the Freshman year were: Presi- dent, Mary Alice Miller, Vice-President, Peggy Wofford, Secretary and Treasurer, Irene Spry. We were just start- ing out in sports and were therefore very happy when Mary Alice Miller, Betty Sue Webb and Harold Wagner made the Varsity Basketball teams. W'e were very proud of Harold VVagner, for receiving the Scholastic Award over the entire school. -A Our vacation seemed short, because we were still awed by the routine of high school and anxious to resume our place as Sophomores, with Coach Sinclair as our homeroom teacher. We were more confident that year, and proceeded to enlarge the volume of our knowledge. Imagine our pride when Mary Alice Miller, Peggy Wofford, Iva Grey Eller, Barbara Jean Spillman and Harold Wag ner were initiated into the Beta Club! Again three of our girls and two of our boys represented our class on the Varsity Basketball squad. The class -officers were: President, Harold Wagner, Vice-President, Pauline Gales, Secretary and Treasurer, Peggy Wofford. The year sped by, and almost before we knew it, we were Jolly Juniors ! Only twenty-six of our original forty-four were still with us, and Miss McMahan was our homeroom teacher. It proved to be an exciting year, with our class play Miss Chatterbox and our class party. Sports were also in the spotlight, for it was the school's first year of football. Our Junior boys proved themselves to be very capable, because seven of them helped to compose the squad. They were: Lloyd Troutman, blocking back, Joe Cuthrell. left end, Sonny Miller, right guard, George Jordan, quarterback, Harold Wagner, right end, and Richard Beck, right tackle. Our most successful event of the year was the Junio r-Senior Banquet, at the Hotel Charlotte, Charlotte, North Carolina. We were honored to have Mrs. George Apperson as our guest speaker. VVe were well represented in the final Commencement Exercises with five of the class acting as Marshals, and the remainder acting as ushers to the Seniors. As the year closed with happy memories, we looked forward eagerly to the next year, our final year at dear old Cooleemee High. The Junior Class officers were: President, Peggy Wofford, Vice-President, Sonny Miller, Secretary, Iva Grey Eller, and Treasurer, Barbara Jean Spillman. ' Our class had dwindled to twenty-three as we entered the Halls of Learning for this, our last year as the Senior Class of 1949. Under the direction of Mrs. Schroder we have carried out many activities, such as publishing our newspaper, Inside C.H.S.,7' presenting our Senior play, Just Duckyf' and publishing our class edition of The Indian Echo. As usual, we went all out for sports with six girls on the Varsity Basketball team, and five boys, and six boys on the Football Squad. We helped boost the school spirit by having a bonfire, complete with dummy, before the last football game of the season. It was a complete success. Harold Wagner and Eugene Hellard, Seniors, received the highest awards in football by being chosen All-Star Right End and Left Tackle, respectively, by the Salisbury Evening Post. Offi- cers were: President, Mary Alice Miller: Vice-President, Mildred Foster, Secretary, Barbara Jean Spillmang and Treasurer, Iva Grey Eller. Now we are looking forward to the climax of our Senior year, when we will attend the Juni-or-Senior Banquet as honored guests, tour Washington, D, C., and attend th at greatest event of all-our Commencement Exercises. So. after twelve years of work and play, we have reached the first step on the ladder of success. This is not the ending, only the beginning, and we are looking forward to the future with trust in our hearts and true knowl- edge that ours is a life of joy and opportunity. We shall endeavor to build upon the firm foundation we have acquired here in dear old C.H.S. for the betterment of ourselves and the world. IVA GREY ELLER Class Historian January 15, 1949
