He Was first assigned to the USS Skagit CAKA-1051 and sub- sequently served on the USS Macon QCA-1321 and the USS Charles P. Cecil CDDR-8351 before coming to the Coolbaugh in May 1954 as Executive Officer. LT Ruehrmund now makes his home in Norfolk, where he lives with his Wife and two sons.

McCarthy, a native of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania entered the Naval Service in 1941 and was commissioned in 1942. He has served on: The U. S. S. INTREPID, U. S. S. LEYTE, U. S. S. THOMASON, U. S. S.- MCCOOK, U. S. S. TUMULT, U. S. S. PAWCATUCK and the U. S. S. COOLBAUGH. He partici- pated in the Okinawa Campaign and raids against Japan during World War II.
