Regular periods of type training are assigned to allow for competitive exercises designed to gain this experience. In addition, however, fleet and task group exercises and maneuvers give us an opportunity to work with larger ships and with the fleet air arm. Anti-submarine warfare practice each day at Key West helped develop the general alertness that carried the ship so successfully through a busy two months of Atlantic Hunter-Killer duty. Frequent general drills 'on the summer cruise had the double effect of keeping ship's company alert while the midshipmen the proper performance of various duties.
