Consequently the Written matter has been kept to an absolute minimum. We gratefully acknowledge the art contributions of Mrs. Ralph Peters, David Soto, SN, USN, and Dennis Banks, RDSN, USN, and appreciate the photographs submitted by members of the crew for use herein. This book is dedicated to Lieutenant Commander Thomas S. McCarthy, USN, upon his transfer from duty as Commanding Officer. We all wish him the best of luck in his future assignments. Assigned temporarily to the Fleet Sonar School, the ship was underway early each day With a group of students. It Was our job to teach them the practical aspects of anti-submarine warfare. Since the ship docked each evening, family life was usually uninterrupted. A liberty cruise to Havana, Cuba and a trip to West Palm Beach, Florida broke the monotony of routine school-ship duty. Two American Express four day tours to London gave the men an inexpensive and enjoyable way of seeing England's big city . Some attempts to see the colorful changing of the guards at Buckingham Palace were foiled by London's wet weather. Westminster Abbey, the Tower of London, Winsor Castle, Piccadilly Circus were examined closely by all visitors. The hospitality of the English people was wonderful as they welcomed us to their major naval base. Many long faces were noted on 11 August when the ship sailed again for the 15 day voyage to Guantanamo Bay, Cuba. ,..,. s..ann,-sfr.,-..-u...f-v,-.,.-f--vv-v-v'+ A ..,,y..-N.-Q-v-..-.. f ., 9. Regular periods of type training are assigned to allow for competitive exercises designed to gain this experience. In addition, however, fleet and task group exercises and maneuvers give us an opportunity to work with larger ships and with the fleet air arm. Thus the efficiency of the Coolbaugh is constantly being tested and improved by such drills as surface and air gunnery, seamanship, engineering and damage control and simulated coinbat operating assignments. ri 3 , 3-1... Anti-submarine warfare practice each day at Key West helped develop the general alertness that carried the ship so successfully through a busy two months of Atlantic Hunter-Killer duty. Frequent general drills 'on the summer cruise had the double effect of keeping ship's company alert while the midshipmen the proper performance of various duties. Of course upkeep periods must be scheduled and although hard work continues, a few weeks in port allows a little rest. The Exec conducts divine services on the fantail . H . . They spent approximately one-third of the time in each of the three training subdivi- sions: engineering, operations, and gunnery. The midshipmen Were integrated into the ship's Watch bill rather than assigning them merely as observers. They served in capacities as junior oflicer of the deck, helmsman, lookout, and burnerman and throttleman in the engineering spaces. The midshipmen manned their own gun- firing stations and fired at drones, sleeves, and surface sleds. On September 3 they disembarked to return to their colleges and universities to continue their studies. We feel certain they gained much practical experience and returned with many memories of a summer With the Navy. .,.. - -...,.,..-.-v...,...Y V .............. . .., - ,V-...M 1 -- -, .T me .J..- cc.
