FLASHES FROM THE TWELVE YEAR DIARY OF CLASS OF 54 As the diary is opened we see the year 1942 tn big numbers This is the real beginning of our twelye ye1r diary Mrs M 1d1son and Mrs Covington duided 77 boys 1nd 50 girls into two groups This school business was new and a lot of fun for many bright eyed children for now they were big boys and girls starting to school On the second page we see Miss Foster trying to get the children quiet to tell them that they were to give a chapel program next week Since it was February they gave 1 program based on the h1SfOI'lL eyents that had occurred in that month A May Day Festiy al IS the headline on the third page Yes there we see Miss Green 1nd her third graders haying a festival and they are wlndxng the May Pole' Looking a little closer at the picture we can see Barbara Adkins as May ueen with her tendants' Shirley Prather Ardella Daywalt Frances Hager Louise Godbey Ruby Nance Mildred A new teacher' Doesnt that spell trouble especrally when she is 1 single woman' Miss Sherrill didnt seem to mind our foolishness too much She and Miss Wilhelm introduced Geography to us After Christmas that year we see in the record many new narres and faces We were happy to welcome the Wayside students to our s hool but were sorry their building had burned On the fifth page we see Mrs Cook a teacher from Wayside and Mrs Sherrill with the two big fifth grades Now that the students of the two schools had become better acquainted with each other they became one big group having a lot of fun Believe it or not we were so good that year that we had the privilege of going to the Turkey Farm on 1 picnic' Th 1t was so much fun missing a whole day of school and spreading lunch together This was the first time they had ever permitted the fifth grade to do such a thing The year 1947 is on the sixth page My' Whats all the excitement? Miss Norville and Mrs Kennerly seem to be trying to get us students headed into the right rooms' We were changing classes for the hrst time and found lf more fun than to gaze all day at the same teacher We also were allow ed to play some basketball even though we didn t know too much about it it was a lot of fun We were told that our seyenth year would be the hardest but with Mrs Evans and Mrs Corpening guiding us we made it In history we studied about the Olympic Festi 31 I 1' ' ' ' -' 2 7 M . 1 ' . . vals and after findmg them so lnterestmg declded that we would have one of our own Consequetnly one pretty sprmg day we had runnmg jumps the sack races the charlot races and many more What do we see ID brg letters on our 8th page' Somethmg about H1gh School but we were not tn Hlgh School then not the classes anyway Now I see we were to be located rn the Hrgh School burldmg Mr Love and Mnss Conger were our homeroom teachers then but we also had some new ones who taught drlferent subjects We even had a mrdget basketball team that year and had the experxenfe of playmg games away from home luke the varsxty team At the end of the year we had a regular Commencement program to show that we were graduating from grammar grades jnto Hlgh School The program we gave was lrlce thxs Auld Lang Syne Members of Class Devononal Blame Barry Salutatory Maxine Wxlllams Last Wlll and Testament Scottxe Mullrs Poem Jerry Smxth Valedrctory Carolyn Dobson Another headlrne HIGH SCHOOL that must mean that we have reached the 9th page of our Drary COnly four more years to go rncludrng thrs OI'1ClD Here we were rntroduced to many new subjects and could even have our chorce about taklng or leavmg some of them The favorrtes were Home Ec for the grrls and Agrxculture for the boys We felt much older then that we were rn Hrgh School and had many more prrvrleges In the 10th grade Mxss Arey and Mxss Busby were our homeroom teachers We had Brology a scrence whrch most of us enjoyed especrally gathermg wtld flowers and usmg the class perrod to do so Thrs year we got to take a trrp to L1nv1lle Caverns on May second everybody was up brrght and early lixmg a prcnrc lunch and wrth a chartered bus off we go It took us the brggest part of the mornlng to reach there but rt was loads of fun just to be away from school wlth the group We were late gettmg home that nrght and everybody was trred out but all could say that we had had a wonderful ttme As we turn the next to the last page of our twelve year Drary we realrze that rt won t be long unnl we shall have to close the book but not forever we hope But now lets read and see what the excrtement was 32 Y 3 5 ' Y 7 , . f ' .
