«rv s Cook High School Adel, Georgia 31620 Volume XXXVI During their years at Cook High School, CHS students form various types of unions with their teachers, coaches, and peers that de- termine the people they will be long after graduation. Students at CHS develop friendships through participation in school activities and clubs, such as pep rallies, band, Anchor Club, and cheerleading, all of which are seen here. Belonging to a special group or par- ticipating in a certain club or school activity with other students makes pupils at CHS stronger, more well-rounded people. Students at Cook High enjoy both working and playing together and realize that by working together they can accomplish their goals, for in unity there is strength. 2 Opening 4 Opening Cook High students form various types of unions during their high school years, many of which will continue to last as they grow older and enter the adult world. These unions include relationships with friends, with fellow players on a squad, with members of the op- posite sex, and with helpful and concerned teachers and coaches. Coach Cowan and his girls’ bas- ketball team are just one of the many types of unions formed by the people of CHS. Another is the type formed by students such as Hiram Day and Roxy Hunter — a union of hearts. Opening 5 X v' 6 Opening Cook High teachers and faculty have an endless number of ways of extracting justice from misbehaving students, some of which are both interesting and amusing. No old-fashioned wooden paddles for these teachers — too boring. Instead, they invent new and creative ways of making sure a student gets exactly what he or she deserves. It has been said that teachers at CHS have ways of making a student NOT talk. Opening 7 Teachers and faculty at Cook High must have graduated from their Discipline 101 class with flying col- ors, for they are experts at making a student regret he ever misbe- haved. Shown are just a few of the creative ways teachers at CHS ex- tract payment from disrespectful students. Spanish teacher Mrs. McCormick sits on top of unruly students while Coach Burgdorf prefers a more violent approach — he throws bothersome pupils out of upper-story windows, thus making certain they don’t misbehave again. There are even times when CHS students make sure that teachers get their just desserts, as in the case of Ms. Morgan, who appears up to her neck in trouble. The students and faculty of Cook High take pride in their school and defend it to the utmost of their ability. They strive to preserve Cook’s standards of excellence in academics and in competitive sports. Here CHS Hornet basketball players defend their impres- sive record of wins from teams who would be more than happy to lower Cook’s ranking while CHS wrestlers do some defending of their own and result in winning the 2AA State Wrestling Title. Shown pinning his opponent at the state meet is wrestler Eric Posted. In the big picture below right, CHS English teachers put Mrs. McNair on the defensive at the 1987 Homecoming Pep Rally. Opening 11 Defending Cook High School can be a tough job but CHS athletes and teachers manage to pull it off with style and finesse. On the op- posite page, Hornet wrestler Spen- cer O’Quinn is in the spotlight dur- ing an exciting match, Mr. Drazdowski shows his defensive side on Historical Figure Day dur- ing Homecoming week, and soft- ball player Leslie Rogers gets de- fensive during a CHS softball game. Below is Cook softball player Starr Baker, the intense look on her face showing what defense is all about. Also below, football player Robert Crosby receives an injury during one of the 1987-88 season games defending Cook High. vMtAS t 14 Opening CHS students spend the school year promoting the general welfare of both Cook High School and Cook County. Students such as the Anchor Club members on the opposite page enjoy helping others and making them smile. These Anchor members helped children from Adel Elementary open the gifts given to them at the annual Anchor Club Christmas Party for needy children. CHS Cheerleaders promote the general welfare of students at Cook High by giving out spirit sticks like the one given to Tammy Pitts on the opposite page. Anchors Lea Gaskins and Leslie Rogers bring smiles to people at the Adel Elementary Halloween carnival by painting their faces while the Y-Club promotes the well-being of CHS students by sponsoring an Arrive- Alive program to educate them about the disastrous affects of drinking and driving. Opening 15 Cook High holds many special activities during each school year in order to pro- mote the general welfare of its students. Shown are just a few of the moral- boosting projects and activities put on for the enjoyment of CHS students and faculty. These include annual dress-up days during Homecoming week when students like Scott Ray, shown above, dress in their favorite costumes and the Homecoming Door Contest in which students such as Kristina Brady and Loresia Leavens help teachers decorate their doors for competition. The CHS Drama Club puts on a one act play each year for the enjoyment of students and teachers alike Mrs. Baggett and Mr. Wil- liams show that teachers can act too. 16 Opening _ V This year the Annual Staff dedicates the annual to Coach feruce Long. There is one word to describe this man, it is I courage. It takes much courage to put up with the elite crew r in ISS everyday, not to mention those girls on the softball team. He's a quiet man, not much to say, but every time you see him there's always a smile on his face and that special Hi. This is our way of saying Thank You for showing us, the students of Cook High, some of the courage and ded- ication that you possess. Thanks, Coach Long. Our Three Sons Perhaps the most important responsibility and highest calling placed on parentsduring their short lifespan is the rearingand training of their children. Our children our loaned to us for such a short time. It is entirely too brief time to teach what they need to survive and succeed in the world. Blessed, indeed, arc the parents whose children excel while in devel- oping years and mature into adults who make positive contributions to society. We are three-times blessed. Each of our three sons have excelled in their own way. Our first-born son, Marlon, made us swell with pride as we saw him make his mark. He convinced us that he could accomplish anything he attempted. Our first STAR Student, Marlon graduated from CHS in 1978, received his BS in Chemistry from Georgia Tech, awarded a PhD from the University of Texas in Austin in 1986, and is now a research scientist at Penn State. Our second son, Monte, made his mark in another way. He was our athlete , playing both baseball and basketball. After graduation in 1980, he went to GSWC in Americusand earned a BA. He presently teaches in Ashburn and coaches girls basketball, football and baseball. He is making a fine moulder of young minds and bodies. We knew from the day he was born that Darin, our third--and last—son, was special. He read—and retained—just about everything in sight, even the encyclopedia! On subjects that interested him he threw himself completely in search of everything on that subject. As the years passed, he became self-motivated, determined and dedicated beyond our expectations. He excelled because of hard work—and found that good things come to those who sacrifice and persevere. His honors are merely rewards for his goals he aspired to and reached. Darin became our second STAR Student, and also a National Merit Scholar. He also thrilled us because of his dedication and determination as a wrestler. Since our sons are the sum total of all their past experiences and relationships, there are many people who have played a part in their success. We thank all those teachers and other people who have had a positive influence on Marlon, Monte and Darin. There are many productive years ahead for our sons, and we don’t know the final outcome. We, their parents, always encouraged them to be the best they can be. We know that the nurturing, training, encour- agement, criticism and love they have received from everyone has well-prepared them fora worthwhile life. We are certain that they will continue to be a source of pride and joy for us. Yes, we are indeed blessed. We love you, Daddy and Mama 206 Ads Editor’s Message 1988 was a year filled with memories that we, the people of Cook High, shall cherish always. Many years from now as we look through this annual we will remember such things as our State Champion Wrestling team, our great Girls’ Basketball team that placed second in State, fun-filled pep rallies, Homecoming Week, Almost Anything Goes, getting our class rings, and most of all, the people we left behind. We, the Annual Staff, hope that we have managed to truly capture at least a few of these memories within this, the 1988 Acorn. The students and faculty of 1988 will forever be a part of Cook High, just as Cook High will forever be a part of us. Our days at CHS will never be forgotten; they will be preserved al- ways within our hearts and the pages of this yearbook. Even though many of us will not re- turn again next year, we will always remember our high school and its people — the people of Cook High 1988. Kim Whiddon — Editor 208 Closing
