Striving to attain these lofty expectations presents the opportunity for personal benefit. Spirit, Pride, Academics, Partici- pation, and the Community all make an impact on our Lives. 2 3 « Spirit shows in many ways ... the vivacious cheerleader at a pep rally before the season's big- gest game, students losing their voices because they've cheered during a close game, students representing the school in literary meets or band competitions, practicing hard and then doing their best, to reflect a good image of Cook High. Pride has Us roots in many places. For the athelete, it's crossing the finish line first or catching a touch- down pass. For the studious, it’s an A + on a composition. For the Future Farmer, it's a Grand Cham- pion. For the teacher, it’s a former student who succeeds and remembers to say thanks. 6 7 As burdensome as our assigned book reports and term papers seem, they broaden our minds and force us to think. Our studies prepare us for further education or simply for becoming better informed citizens. Our exposure to history, math, science and litera- ture forces us to think of that which lies outside our protected cocoon-like Cook County environ- ment. Participation makes better students and future citizens of us all. Through classroom discus- sions and activities, we broaden our minds. Club activities teach us leadership and speaking skills. High School friendships are the basis for social contacts for many years to come. n 12 Our Community contributes much to our lives. Family, friends and relatives provide love and guidance. Community leaders provide an example of local gov- ernment that we learn about in the classroom. Successful business- men are examples of the free enterprise system. Farmers prac- tice what agriculture classes teach. With parents and neighbors as examples, we learn how to manage a home and raise a fam- ily. As we leave Cook High School, our Lives are before us, and we fulfill our GREAT EXPECTATIONS by setting goals — perhaps a college degree or establishing a family. These goals are a challenge for future achievements. As one goal is met, another arises in its place; thus, we always strive to make our lives better by realizing our full potential. Do we strive for prestigious career goals, or do we settle in a humdrum existence? We have the opportunity to do with our lives as we please. Whether good or bad, we make our goals. Which will we choose? The choice is ours. ACORN DEDICATION Dr. Edward C. Leichner, a native of Brooklyn. New York, was appointed Superintendent of Cook County Schools February, 1970. His term has been one of progress and innovation. Under his leadership, the county school system has grown both academically and physically. This past year has seen the completion of the million-dollar Cook High School academic building, vocational building, and gymnasium. Dr. Leichner has truly been the epitome of a progressive leader — and like a true leader he does not rest with each accom- plishment — but proceeds forward. For leadership and accomplishment, the yearbook staff dedicates the 1980 Acorn to Dr. Edward C. Leichner. 17 1980 ACORN KING GREG WALKER 18 1980 ACORN QUEEN TAMMY GRIFFIN 19 21 THE CLASS OF EIGHTY Senior Class Officers Leff to Right — Marie Leavens — Council, Lisa Foster — Vice-President, Tommy Wood — Council, Rhonda George — Council, Ross Phillips — President Not shown — Rosemary Mitchell — Secretary, Greta Jean Ed wa rds — T reasu rer Sondra Adams V T-V Deena Arrington Greg Bell Darryl Brown Bart Allen Julie Ashley Stanley Boyette Julie Burdette Wendy Alley Kathy Bailey Debra Brannon The Class of Eighty Judy Castleberry Tracy Covington Yvonne Cox Peggy Castleberry Monte Cowart Erwin Crosby Billy Dantorth Leslie Darby Sandra Clements Richard Crosby Robin Daughtrey 24 Kenny Davis Olivia Day David Folds Phil Fausett Dwight Folsom Greta Edwards Mike Day Dorothy Doe Priscilla Davis Pamela Deberry Greg Flowers Michael Folsom The Class of Eighty Jeff Fordham Lisa Foster Jerry Gaines Jeaneane Gandy Rhonda George Sandra Gibbs Hank Giddens Tony Gandy Ron George Alicia Gear Duke Gibbs • Lisa Godwin Dorothy Griffin Tim Griffin Robert Griner Sunny Hall Mike Griffin Penny Griffis Janet Gutherie Tonya Hall Danny Griffin Tammy Griffin Jennifer Griner Timmy Guthrie The Class of Eighty Lisa Hester Crystal Hancock Loretta Harris Sheila Harris John Hill Tim Harris Lillian Love Leslie Lowder Mike Luke Marie Leavens Mike Lindsey Jimmy Long Chris Knight Steve Jones Michael Kravec The Class of Eighty Billy Mainor Tommy Marlin Dawn Mashburn Greg Mathis Henry Maxwell Carl McCormick Janie Miller Cindy Morrell Brenda Orr Vernon Payne Darlene Moore Dallas Neloms Kerry Paige Rosemary Mitchell Ronald Pettigrew George Payne The Class of Eighty Pam Pharr Diane Phillips Ross Phillips Barbara Pierce Debra Pierce Robert Pitts Donnie Rountree Ken Rountree Jacqueline Scott Phon Sirmons Shelia Stripling Brent Sumner Toni Sumner Patsy Taylor Tony Sampson Teresa Sumner The Class of Eighty Jimmy Tennant Freddie Thomas Fredrick Tippins Greg Walker Tammy Weeks Holly Wilson I Tommy Wood Clifford Lovett Pictures are not available for the following students: Melanie Bennett Diane Covington Leon Dawson Larry Harley Joseph Harrison Neal Jones Marshall Logan Immogene Love Harriet Manning Demita Robinson Mitty Ann Ross Barbara Scruggs Terri Slater Scott Storey Donald Smith Greg Thomas Eric Tuckes Jeffery Turner 35 8 E N I 0 R I R E C T 0 R Y Sondra Dee Adams Sondra In this world, it is not what we take up that makes us rich but what we give Drama Club 1.2. 3 AMCC 1.2.3 FBLA4 FFA 4 VOT 4 FBLA Meet 4 Student Council 4 Wendy Rae Alley Wendy AMCC 1 Band 2.3 Drama Club 3 One-Act-Play 3 VOT 4 FBLA 4 Deena Danette Arrington Deena When in doubt, keep talking FHA3 Cheerleader 4 Student Council 4 Student Council — Parliamentarian 4 Art Club 4 Stinger Staff 4 Julie Ann Ashley Red Trust in God always and let him lead your life Honor Roll 1.2. 3 Top Ten 1.2 Georgia Certificate of Merit 3 Y-Club 1.2. 3.4 Jr Beta Club 1.2 GAA 1.2 Track Team 2 Basketball 1.2 Basketball Manager 3. 4 Kathy Ann Baily Kathy Live. But practice — hours, days, weeks of it — must come before any type of musical performance. Before the Marching Hornets made their entrance on the field at halftime, they had put in many hours of prac- tice. And as many saw, it paid off with a good perform- ance. The band participated in fund raising projects such as selling candy to gain money for band uniforms, instru- ments and even a trip at the end of the year. The Marching Hornets marched in several band competitions, such as the Sunbelt Marching Festival in Moultrie and the East Georgia Marching Festival in Statesboro. Auditions were held for the Junior High and Senior High All-State Band. Representatives went to the Eighth District Senior High Concert Band Clinic at Epworth-by-the-Sea near Bruns- wick. The band performed in Valdosta at Concert Band Festival receiving highest ratings since 1968 Band Council. Gregg Flowers, Theteus While, Robert Pills. Lynn Mar- shall, Marie Ray.
