Friendship is a major part of Cook High — our harmony is evident throughout every aspect ot our school life. 5 FUN What would a school day be without a little fun ? 6 10 We are all common in one trail — our search for knowledge and our pursuit of wisdom. 15 We dedicate the 1979 Acorn to Mr. Alex Futch in return for the priceless gifts of knowledge and inspira- tion he has bestowed upon us. This is our way of expressing our gratitude and appreciation for all he has done as a teacher and a friend for the past years at Cook High School. Mr. Futch has stimulated an interest in the field of Science by being an inspiration to the students and faculty alike. For devoted service and outstanding leadership, we, the Acorn Staff of 1979, dedicate this yearbook to Mr. Futch as a token of our appreciation. Here you are — a group of young men who have sweated a ton, gotten themselves bruised egos, fussed at, ridiculed and a lotsa other stuff, — just to claim to be integral part of a group of gutsy young men bound and determined to help a teammate get a stupid looking oblong blown up pig epidermis over a strip of marble dust 4 inches wide more times than their visitors or host enemies of 2 and ' hours. Am I proud of 'em? You Dang Tootin' and I’m not lonely. Our coaches, cheerleaders, teachers, students, our old die-hard supporters — and perhaps, more importantly, our enemies even respect them — and that's a bunch. So, here you are 1978 Hornets, you are greatly appreciated — You've done your job — and here’s to you 1979 Hornets and then on and on and on — They started — You're gonna keep it rolling. If this is any indication of fhe cal- iber of athletes coming up, the Hornets have a bright future in store for them. The entire team worked very hard to improve as the season progressed. The Junior Varsity team compiled a very respectable 5-3 record. The Junior Varsity can be proud of their season and their teammates, because they are the future for the Cook High Hornets. The baseball team through teamwork placed third in the sub- region. A highlight of the year for the baseball team was their trip to the beach to participate in a baseball tournament. 44 45 This year's Hornet basketball team was disappointing in several ways and yet rewarding in others. Disappointing in overall achievements, yet rewarding in that nearly all players are returning; and thus, hope and positive attitudes return. I would like to thank those people who supported us as well as the players who gave so much of their time and energy. The rewards for that time and energy is still to come. BOY’S VARSITY BASKETBALL GIRLS’ VARSITY BASKETBALL THE WASPS The Wasps started their season losing two of their first three games to Berrien and Waycross, then they went on a five-game winning streak defeating Brooks, Worth, Cairo, Early and Waycross before losing again to Clinch County. The second half of the season opened with the Wasps grabbing the Ware County Gatorettes by the tail and hold- ing on for a win, then getting sweet revenge over Clinch County at home. In the next two games, our young ladies lost to the eventual state champion, Berrien County and State semi-finalist Cairo. The season came to an end with our team winning five of their last six games. so BOYS JR. VARSITY BASKETBALL The Junior Varsity basketball team enjoyed a successful year after a rocky start and should be given some long overdue credit. J.V. teams as a rule don't get the publicity and praise that they should in spite of the fact that they work as hard as any other athletic team. Let’s begin to recog- nize this and other J.V, groups for what they are and the role they play for our school I will always appreciate them and the effort they gave to Cook High this year. VARSITY BASKETBALL COOK JR. VARSITY GIRLS BASKETBALL The Wasps started their season by losing two ot their first three games. After that, they settled down and won their last nine ball games. They were a successful team because they played together as a team, enjoyed competition, and loved to play the game of basketball. They fin- ished their season record with nine wins and two losses. The team members included: Katria McCormick. Stacy Johnson, Mary Lathem, Debbie Robinson. Janice Shaw, Karen Johnson, Shambley Harley, Kim Chapman and Lequita Sims 53 TENNIS The tennis teams have had a very successful season. They ended the season with a 10-0 record for boys and 5-4-1 record for the girls. Go Hornets. 54 THE GOLF TEAM The golf team was pleasewith the steady Improve- ment of the individual and team scores. They placed seventh in the golf Tournaments. Timmy Hilliard placed third in a low medalist competition by shooting an excellent seventy-four. This season's record came to 6- 6. 56 57 The Cook High takedown squad did very well for its first year. The team had a successful sea- son winning 7 matches while losing only 3. The biggest asset the team had was the pride and desire of the team members, since they were largely inexperienced with only one returning with any experience. The team had 5 individuals to place in the area finals, and two to go to the state meet in Atlanta. Team Members Greg Joiner Co-Captain Tommy Wood Co.
