■IIUU.. 11■ t - puwur BHB U .IT mpmm M mm] .• i , i iTTTTTr.'; : n i hM-i ili V Mi VV W.i '1 Smile — If Makes People Wonder Whai You've Been Up To. Smile. It's a word that we’ve been familiar with since we were old enough to understand portions of our English language. We've been encouraged to put on our best smiles when company dropped in for visits, or in front of a black box called a camera. Throughout our lives, the camera has played an important role in determining how our expressions and actions are interpreted by ourselves and others. We've all clowned and mugged for the camera, but the most revealing pictures have been taken when the camera's presence was not known to the subject. A great deal of those fleeting moments that we thought went unnoticed were often captured on film by the ACORN staff photographers and classified as Candids. Our mothers always told us, Never do anything you wouldn't want everybody to know, and here's another friendly warning: The camera never lies. 5 The Long Hours Spent Working Toward Perfection All of our lives, people have told us to work hard and we will be rewarded in the end. Apparently Cook High students live by that idea, whether it is on the playing field or in the classroom. The important thing is that we try to make good use of our many talents and are willing to do the best we can to uphold Cook High's name. Although we may not be STATE CHAMPS or all members of WHO'S WHO, we can be satisfied in knowing that we did our best, and that's all anyone can ask of us. 7 No Two Are Quiie Alike We all learned in biology class that it is impossible for two people to be exactly the same. Just think what our world would be like if we all looked, acted, and thought the same way. Sometimes it's not so easy to be an individual. It takes a great deal of courage to come to school dressed in a bath robe and shower cap or to conduct an assembly or to be different from the crowd. These are just a few of the many ways we have of expressing our individuality at Cook High. We all come from different backgrounds and have different standards, we all have been used as ingredients in the giant melting pot that makes up the student body at Cook High. Our teachers have played an important role in developing our individual characters, and they have molded many of us into well-rounded individuals who are not afraid to think for ourselves and make our own decisions about our lives. Our country needs new leaders for the future, and the only way we can be leaders is to be able to think, act, and be a TRUE individual. V Farewell Cook High School Man, I can’t wait until I’m a Senior so that I can leave this boring school. ’ ’ These words were muttered at least once a day by the 1977 Seniors when they were underclassmen. The anticipation of finally being able to say farewell to Cook High and to their grade school years has kept them going through the years. But now, when the time to clean out their lockers for the last time is here, they are somewhat reluctant to leave this place that has become a valuable part of their lives. In the years to come when they look back on their years at Cook High, they can tell their children as their parents told them, ’’Those were the best years of my life.’’ Homecoming Parade Gets Festivities Rolling Homecoming 1976 marked ihe return to the traditional crowning of the Queens as the half-time festivity at the football game. Despite a long week of suspense. a very tiring Homecoming day, a competitive parade, various school activities, and a freezing football game. Homecoming 1976 turned out to be a very memorable event. Earlier in the day a lovely, float-filled parade entertained many as it filed down the city's main streets. After the fierce competition was all over, the Senior class float entry was awarded the Best-A 11-Around trophy. The theme of the Senior float was Fall of the Trojans. displayed with a Roman chariot adorned with the entire Homecoming court. Capping the honor of Most Original float was the Sophomore class which illustrated a trojan horse filled with Hornets. 12 13 Homecoming . . .The Thrill, The Anticipation, And The Letdown. Sherry Fulp And Peggy Robinson Crowned Homecoming Queens. Homecoming Day. The traditional day for traditional activities. No one can explain the feeling students get when homecoming nears. Especially when your senior year rolls around and it hits you that this is your last ballgame. the last time cheering. marching, or playing. The thrill one receives at being asked to the football game, the anticipation for this year’s queens, and the letdown of losing the game, is a feeling that no two people had alike. Homecoming 1976 only happens once, and it will be a memory that the seniors of ‘77 will always cherish. Dedication To see the world in a grain of sand, And a heaven in a wild flower; Hold infinity in the palm of your hand, And eternity in an hour. William Blake We, the members of the annual staff, would like to dedicate the 1977 Acorn to Mrs. Brenda Barker in appreciation of the many kind things done by her for the faculty and students alike. Mrs. Barker is held in our esteem because of her never-ending ability to cope with problems that arise from day to day. She is seldom seen out of her office, as she is kept prisoner by the tremendous amount of work to be done. We recognize Mrs. Brenda Barker and we are sure as long as Cook High School has one such capable person on its staff, the school will continue to run smoothly. 16 In Memory V Michael Henderson Arthur Payne Michael Long Freddie Abbott 19 Seniors Steven Lamar Baker Sybil Dianne Bell Angela Jean Bennett Pamela June Baker Kevin F. The season could be said to be rewarding in a sense to a football team that lacked size and speed, but not heart. The odds were stacked against them every week, but they seemed not to know the meaning of the word ’’quit. ’ It would have been very easy to give up playing foes such as Waycross, Coffee Co., and Ware Co., but the out-manned, injury-ridden team fought week after week. The success, pride, and character of each member of the 1976 Football team could never be measured by the scoreboard alone. It was a lesson in life: Pick yourself up after heartbreak and keep on coming back to meet the challenge - regard- less of the odds. - Coach Thomason 84 85 J.V. Let’s take a moment and reminisce a few home games: 1 - Cook vs. Brooks, 51-49, in an overtime. Remember Eddie Kee- ly’s shot on the buzzer to tie the game, and what about Nelson Sims’ 2 free throws in the overtime for the victory. 2 - Cook vs. Worth, 57-54, my happiest coaching victory, 10 points down at halftime - a half court trap, Tony Bullard’s 6 for 6 4th quarter free throws brought the upset of the year. 3 - Cook vs. Echols, 48-47, Keith Durden coming from nowhere to block Echols last shot attempt saved victory for Cook. 4 - Cook vs. Fitzgerald, 76-50, Keith Scarborough’s 21 points led us to sweet revenge. The year ended with a 10-11 record, but it contains enough excitement for many hours of pleasant memories. Seniors play a big pan in many aspects of athletics, and the leadership of Keith Scarborough, Keith Durden, and Nelson Sims cannot go unmentioned. I salute you and the rest of the Hornet Basketball team for a job well done. - Coach Dyal 87 88 J. V. While they were averaging 51 points a game, they were also playing an exciting brand of trapping defense. Although the team was composed mostly of Freshmen and Sopho- mores, they still had a respectable 8 wins and 12 losses. With the absence of a Gym and very few experienced Wasps, we feel the year was truly a success. Our seniors will surely be missed but next year’s team is looking very promising. - Coach McDonald 90 91 J. V. With only four starters return- ing, Phil Young, Max Duke, Kenny Goff, and Lonnie Rob- erts, the 77 Hornets worked extremely hard to maintain the winning tradition at Cook High. Keeping with this winning tradition was Phil Young, who posted a pitching record of 9-1. Also there was Kenny Goff who led the team with a .459 batting average which is the highest average of any Hornet ever. There was also the power hit- ter, Max Duke, who hit 2 grand slam homeruns and 2 tri- ples. And with people like Jimmy Griffin commiting less than YPlo errors per game and the improved play of Tony Marshall with a batting average of .341, there was no wonder why the Hornets kept winning. One of the biggest highlights of the year was the triple play early in the sea- son. A baseball team is not made up of only 1 or 2 players. It is made up of many and I would like to congratulate everyone on a job well done. - Coach Bruce Long °Phil Young Max Duke 0 Kenny Goff 0 Lonnie Roberts °Jimmy Griffin Ralph Gornto Royce Coleman Tony Marshall Lance Lovett Greg Barfield Tony Bullard Mike Williams Ricky Huckaby Tommy Marshall Bill Wood Jimmy Reeves Tony Williams Senior Players Scorekeeper: Deedie Millson Batgirls: Kelly Crowley Dianne Rencarge Coaches: Bruce Long Lloyd McDonald 93 94 J.
