In later years, while turning these pages, if you should recall the many smiles, sorrows, and dreams of ’63 we shall be content, knowing that we have done the thing we were called upon to do. We, the 1963 ACORN staff, have joined together whole- heartedly to make this ACORN one of the best ever. We feel that your satisfaction with this volume is our success, and with this thought in mind WE proudly give you the seed to the 1962-63 ACORN. Mary Lewis-Gail Powers EDITORS VkoK. D. Fielder, our Guidance Counselor, this copy of the 1963 ACORN. The Staff 4 CO OK HIGH FACULTY The quality of any school depends upon the dedication and work of the administrative staff. Cook High School has such a staff, and the work has been designed at all times to improve the school, its policies, and the educational services that the school offers. The students hail the Guidance Office as the best boon to the school scene in recent years, and the cooperation received from all members of the administrative staff has been of the utmost calibre. We, the Senior Class of 1963, sorrowfully follow the usual departure of every senior class from high school. We carry with us the memories of the many wonderful moments of our past five years at Cook High. We will always remember the little events that have taken place, and the many thrills they brought us—class rings. Senior prom, and graduation. Our days as Seniors are now coming to a close and we must pass this honored title to an oncoming class. It is our sincere wish that this class will obtain, as we have, a higher education and a new beginning in life. “Class of 1963” . 26 Most Intellectual WALTER GUTHRIE SANDRA REVILLS 27 Best Looking W ENDELL CLEMENTS RAMONA TERR Y Best All-Round LAWRENCE BRIDGES JUDY McKINNON Most Athletic IRA POWERS GAIL POWERS Wittiest DAVID FAUSETT MARY LEWIS 32 Best Personality LENN TA YLOR BETTY W EBB Most Congenial LARR Y CRO W PAT JOHNSON 33 34 Most Likely to Succeed MARK VanBRACKLE LINDA KAYE GIDDENS It was stated many times during the school year of 1962-63 that the senior class of Cook High School was the “sellingest” class in the history of Cook County. This class of “high-pressure” salesmen could peddle anything from newspaper subscriptions to tickets to even trinkets. In fact they even got up a market for several tons of used newspapers. They sold them by the pound, it seems. Also, during the course of the year the seniors sponsored a musical show called the Senior Revue. It was hailed as a titanic success and received widespread praise and com- ment. One other outstanding accomplishment of the 1962-63 Senior Class is that 17 mem- bers of the class were awarded Scholastic Sweaters for maintaining an “A” average through- out their years at Cook High School. Also, the largest honor group in the history of the school was graduated this year. A total of 95 seniors made up the graduating class. Overall, this year’s graduating group is to be considered in a very commendable light by the entire student body of Cook High School. The Acorn staff takes this opportunity to congratulate each of these 95 graduates and to wish only the very best of everything in life to each of them. —The Editorial Staff The Acorn Cook High School Adel, Georgia Seniors (Inadvertently omitted from Senior section) PATRICIA ANN JOHNSON “Pat” Cheerleader, Captain; Y Clubs; Class and Club offices. Hornets Scrap in Spite of Inexperience III The CHS Hornets move on defense in one of many hotly-contested court battles. Here the defense rises to the occasion and forces a jump shot to fall short of the target. Even though riddled by inexperience and “not-too-much” height, the Cook High Hornets showed determination nearly all of the time, and at times the team even showed signs of top-flight competency. They made themselves known as scrappers, and they always saw fit to battle even ’til the final gun. Below: Forward Wayne Noles pitches in a long looping jump shot while on his way to leading the Hornets in scoring for the 1962-63 cage campaign. Here the opposition seems to be pretty well pulled away from the alley leading to the hoop. RICHARD DUMAS, Senior Richard has played for three years on the varsity team. Richard also plays baseball. Richard scored a total of 285 points during the season. DAVID FAUSETT, Senior. David has played for two years on the varsity squad. This being his senior year, he made quite a record for himself. He scored a total of 208 during the season. David was also a captain this year. IRA POWERS, Senior Ira has played three years on the varsity team. He is a letter athlete with letters in football, basketball, and baseball. Ira was also a captain this year, and scored a total of 210 points. LESLIE LINDSEY, Senior A dedicated athlete, Leslie never failed to give it “that little extra” at all times. He is also a standout on the Hornet Baseball nine. WAYNE NOLES, Junior Wayne has two years experience on the varsity squad. He played sparingly last year, but he proved to be one of the best offensive and de- fensive players on the team. Wayne scored a total of 364 points this season. HUGH REWIS, Junior Hugh has played three years on the varsity team. Hugh has played football, basketball, and base- ball during the years here. The Wasps final record was 19 wins and 5 losses. The three forwards scored 98 points in play-off games. Senior forward Judy McKinnon (10) makes a layup in a game with the Tifton High Angels in which the Angels fell prey to the Wasps by a score of 42 to 32. SHIRLEY SUMNER, Guard NELDA NICHOLS, Cuard Cook High guards held their opponents to a minimum of points in the regular season play and in the tournament competition. Leading in rebounds was Nelda Nichols. Gail Powers, leading scorer for the Wasps this year, shoots one of her outrageous hoop-shots. Judy McKinnon sinks two points in for the Wasps against the Tigerettes of Brooks County. The three games played against the Tigerettes proved to be the most impressive games of the year. 66 C.H.S. Wasps on the Go Ouida Tucker, an All-State forward of the Wasps, goes in for a lay-up in a game with the Angels of Tifton. Ouida is only a Junior and has been voted to this elite position. The local nine were trailing four to nothing in the top of the fifth when Ira let off with a single into left field. From this point on it was all “Hornets.” The final score was Hornets eight and the Berrien Rebels seven. Larry Rowe, a first rate Freshman, first-stop lays down a bunt in the game with the Ocilla Indians. Larry played sparingly during the first four games but came on in the last nine to take over the short stop position. Leslie Lindsey, first string catcher, pounds out a double in the game with Berrien Coun- ty. He slugged a solid .316 for entire season and led the team in BA. He proved adequate at all times as a receiver. David Fausett, IB, connects for a bingle to keep the rally going. 121 JAMES LEWIS Most Improved Player of Year Here are shown the trophy winners for the 1962-63 football season. This is just a small group of wonderful Juniors that pro- vided the Seniors with swell entertain- ment. “He was my man, but he done me wrong,” were the words of Frankie as she killed Johnny, portrayed beautifully by Jerrie Lovett and Larry Danforth. They were only a small part of the en- tertainment at this wonderful Prom. 1962-63 Junior- Who is this cigar smoking rag-time piano player? Could it be that nutty Junior, Jerry’ Postell? I didn’t know you could play a piano. The Balladiers, Jerry and Winston, were also a great part of the entertainment un- der the spotlights, which is their favorite spot.
