Many important details of this big event lie in his hands. He has the respon- sibility of placing the scenery, organizing the program, and planning the dance numbers. During an average school-day he teaches classes in American history, gov- ernment and geography. ln addition to this he directs the glee club. Because of his devotion and helpful- ness tothe student, we, the staff, do dedi- cate this 1960 Acorn to Mr. Mell E. Booth. if The Beta Tri-Hi-Y is one of the largest clubs and most active on campus, thanks to the leadership of Mrs. DeVane. She has served as a Y-Club advisor, tirelessly, for many years. Not only has she ad- vised the club as a whole but also stu- dents individually. She serves as one of the chief math teachers at Cook. Because of her readiness to aid stu- dents in their studies and in other ways, we, the staff, respectfully dedicate this 1960 Acorn to Mrs. James R. DeVane. Faculty Twenty-six teachers make up the faculty at Cook. Not only are they teachers, but also they serve as club advisors, class advisors and direct many other worthwhile activities. Many years of training and experience are included in the quali- fications of the teachers at Cook. The scene above is taken from one of the math classes taught by Mrs. James R. DeVane. A com- pletely modern kitchen is an extra added convenience which makes it easier for the girls to learn. Two years of agriculture are offered to the young man who is especially interested in farming. A modern farm imple- ment shop is at the disposal of the agricul- tural classes. For the working girl, two courses in typing and shorthand are offered. One year of typ- ing is offered to the college bound student who will have typing to do later at college. In addition to these, a course in bookkeeping can be obtained. The library is open to all students at high school. It is especially helpful when term papers or book reports are due. The band is another source where a stu- dent can gain valuable experience. It is, of course, for the musically-inclined student. The band furnishes entertainment at the foot- ball games, and has several band concerts throughout the year. Mr. J. l. They are: Betty Patten, treasurer, Virginia Lindsey, secretary, Karen Dickerson, vice president, and Jim Scruggs, president. In addition to the selling of fruit cake, the iunior class had many other money-raising projects. The class sponsored the Christmas semi-formal dance, sold candy, and also spon- sored many of the after-game dances. Their main headache was the financing of the annual Junior-Senior Reception. This be- came an even greater problem after the state law went into effect forbidding the sale of anything on campus. This year they are finally recognized as one ot the four upper classes, which is really something to them. There are many school ace tivities, in which, as Freshmen, they are allowed to participate. They have the excitement of choosing many of the subjects they will take. Looking at the Sub-Freshmen, they now say, Were we ever like that? Will you marry me? Nancy Castleberry and Kay DeVane both agree that this is how to get a rnan. Merrell Lasseter is the victim. Freshmen Cll Pla Freshmen at Work it There certainly can be some confusing problems in Algebra I according to Doris Maloney. Mrs. DeVane is helping her solve her difficulty. A group of ninth grade students are caught in that tender camera bug trap. Sub-Freshmen This year these students are introduced to an entirely different school systern. They have the problems of learning their way around, getting acquainted with new students and getting used to the school in general. Although they are not actually a part ot the high school, they are allowed to ioin the 4-H Club and to have assembly on activity day. Occa- sionally they go to chapel with the upper tour grades.
