Although there are a few occasional bor- ing days in every class one cannot forget the many interesting incidents which have added spice to the lessons. I 4, v . These endless hours of class discussions, lectures, debates, and tests have tended to cast a light on the students' dislikes. Never- the-less, classes are a school's lifeblood. ALGEBRA . . This picture shows a group of first-year algebra students work- ing over an assignment of equa- tions dealing with two unknowns. Mrs. DeVane and Mr. Sessions were both faced with the problem of teaching algebraic problems. 11' t GEOMETRY . . Those theorems. axioms. and postulates were the back- bone of Mrs. Patterson's geometry class. S t u cl ents began to learn the true meanings of right angles, tangents, secants and other terms. Here we see Glenn Fulp explaining a problem on the theory of a circle. Larry Fulp. Bobby Griffis, Ralph Bennett. and Barrie Bloser look on. CONSTRUCTION . This year construction on Cook-5 new builcling began. This picture displays the builrling during the time the foundation was being coni- pletefl. TYPING . . . HOME ECONOMICS . . . ln Home EC the girls were busy learning how to cook, sew. and just keep house in general. Little did they know before taking home ec, the work it required. From learning the correct way to stitch a seam to learning to preserve food and plan meals, these girls acquired a fuller under- standing of home ec. Here we see some advanced home cc girls during a sewing session. 0 The first day of school- From the typing room comes the sound of a steady peck-peck as learn the now familiar the students begin to fdsa jklz. Sidney and Dillard are working on the lay- out for the Oak Leaf. These two boys along with Dan Cowart and Elaine Lovett worked on advanced journalism throughout the year. Newspapers, annuals, Quill and Scroll, and journalism clinics were part of the projects accomplished by these students. Also. Sidney and Elaine were in charge of Teen Time. student radio program on station WAAG. 1 Are-. 1 1 JOURNALISM I . . In first-year journalism the students learned the basic facts about newspaper writing and printing. They learned the meaning of proof, galley. chase. makeup. ads. lead. and other terms. Here we see the class as they read proofs at the Sparks Eagle. They seem to be inter- ested in their work. The basic material of Journalism I is the writing of news stories, features and edi- torials. Sports stories also play a large part in the course. CHEMISTRY . . BIOLOGY . . PHYSICS . . Science courses also had their place in the daily schedule of the students-aniong them chemistry. physics, and biology. Experiments and bisection were the love of the boys as ther learned the essentials of sciences. Occasionally the girls took an ac- tive interest in bad odors and pre- served frogs too. -Y-'dn-,,,. 1' W5 GT QJXQ4 N-...,,,- ' .W X , . Tillman Norris was one of the main-stays in the Hor- net line all season. ln the first game of the season against the Quitman Pirates, Tillman crashed through the line to bring the ball carrier down behind the goal line for a safety. '- 'gl 'L A, K . .V 5, ,K One of the true bright spots of the 1956 Hornet season was Ronald Gray, Cook halfback. Carrying the ball when short yardage was needed, he was the workhorse of the Hornet backfield. Ronald was one of the top ten scorers in Region IAA, scoring 43 points. He, along with Buddy Talley, received honorable mention on the AS- SOCIATED PRESS ALL-STAR ROLL. Besides being a shifty broken-field runner, Ronald was also a standout on defense. On the opening kickoff of the 1956 grid season, Cook Highis speedy halfback Donald Giddens re- turned the ball an astounding 76 yards for a touch- down. Cook went on to take a decisive 21-12 victory over Class B Quitman. The Cook defense was exceptional as Quitmanis ground game was slowed to a crawl. In their second game of the season, Nashville and Cook battled to a 7-7 tie. Berrien High's steam- rolling offense drove deep into Cook territory four times, each time they were turned away by a mighty defensive wall. Ronald Gray played well on offense and defense. The single wing of the Tifton Blue Devils proved too much for Cook as they amassed 12 first downs to Cookis 6, defeating Cook 14-0. Tifton got the breaks as they recovered two bad snaps from cen- ter and they quickly drove to a score on one of them. Grimsley, Carden and McDaniel were de- fensive stalwarts. Kenneth Riceis powerful run- ning helped Bainbridge to a 32-12 victory over Cook High. Talley and Gray scored the only touchdowns for Cook. Bain- bridge was one of the regional powerhouses in '56, After being declared decided underdogs, Cook High put on a blistering offensive show for a group of awed Miller County fans. The Hornets rambled all over the gridiron and rang up their largest score of the sea- son, 36-6. Gray, Talley, Gid- dens, Norris, G a r d e n, and Grimsley crossed the double stripe. Thomasville's cruising Bull- dogs, Region 1AA champs, smothered Cook by a 38-7 score. Cook's only tally came when Halfback Donald Gid- dens plunged over from the one yard stripe. vw if ' A ' -P A of i Q- its swf- Y' -sian Americus had to go all-out to overcome a devastating attack by the Hornets.
