(Reprinted from the Adel News, November 25, 1954■) SPEAKING OF SPORTS By Ray Alley The 1954-55 Hornets boast a record of five wins, four losses, and one tie, one of the most successful seasons in recent Cook High history. There were 8 seniors who participated in their last gridiron contest in Ocilla last Friday night. Campbell Giddens, the ninth senior on the squad, was unable to complete his senior year on the playing field because of an infection which kept him on the sidelines most of the season. In addition to Campbell, 3 others of the seniors made up the Hornet backfield. Steve Wetherington, halfback, was one of the best punters in Region 1, boasting an average of about 35 yards per kick. Richard Lindsey, fullback, led the team in rushing yardage per try, while Gerald Day, halfback, was runner-up in this department. The Hornet's rugged line opened opponent’s lines for the speedy Hornet backfield. Most of the credit should go to candidate for all-state center, Bobby Ross Phillips, who has played 3 years of varsity football. Also outstanding in the Hornet line were Guard Fritz Stone, Tackle Lowell Taylor, and Ends Earl Bennett and Charles Rentz. Phillips and Taylor were chosen co-captains to lead the Hornets this season because of their out- standing work with the squad. Bennett and Rentz,” stated Head Coach Frank Reiff, are the two best ends I have had since I have been coaching at Cook High.” Junior Tackle Frank Fordham will be back next year along with Guard Wayne Crumpton, Center Donald Grimsley, Ends Buddy Talley and Roy Darby. Only two veteran backs, Joe Lindsey, quarter- back, and Bobby Davis, halfback, are juniors. Full- back Franklin Daughtry, who saw considerable action on the B squad and on the varsity this season, will be back next year. Miss Marianne Talley, shown with Roy Darby, was elected the FOOTBALL SWEETHEART of 1954-55, by vote of the members of the Varsity Football Squad. BOBBY ROSS PHILLIPS GERALD DAY Lineman Back These two football players were named the outstanding lineman and back of the year and received trophies donated by Rainbow's Department Store and A. C. Deen. Bobby Ross was also named on the second team ALL-STATE squad by the Atlanta and Georgia sports writers. 1954-55 GRID RECORD Cook High 7 ‘ 'aycross 39 Cook High 19 -Nashville 13 Cook High 6 Clifton 12 Cook High 38 ‘''Bainbridge .... 20 Cook High 26 Fitzgerald 0 Cook High 13 L-'-'Thomasville ... 37 Cook High 27 Cairo 21 Cook High 26 Cordele 26 Cook High 0 v'Americus 33 Cook High 19 Ocilla 6 «Pjasft . ,, i
