THEME EXPLANATION P E A C E The Great American Seal is a symbol of peace, that peace which has at last overcome tyranny throughout the world. This country has not been the aim of foreign bombs that spelled destruction through the ruined countries of Europe, nor has city after city been destroyed, leaving thou- sands of people hungry or homeless. But it has saddened many homes, it has torn from them those members who were very near and dear. We had to sacrifice many things during the long, hard war, but our reward is PEACE. Our boys have come home to a country of peace and contentment with the earnest desire to keep it that way, knowing that they helped make this country a better place in which to live. The real feeling in American hearts is that more freedom is the key to safety. If we are to be free of war, this must be the century of the common man. If we are to have peace, it will have to be a people's peace, based on the realization by people everywhere that they have everything to lose and nothing to gain by war. The olive branch, with its thirteen leaves held in the right talon of the eagle on the Great American Seal, symbolizes how tenaciously we should hold fast to peace. We have won the War and it is our duty to win the Peace. The thirteen arrows held in the left talon of the eagle on the Seal is a symbol of War. The thirteen stars above the eagle emphasize the fact that we should look upward and always strive by every available means to reach higher and higher until we have attained our reward-LASTING PEACE. - Today as we move against the terrible scourge of war, as we GO FORWARD toward the greatest contribution to LASTING PEACE, I ask you to KEEP YOUR FAITH. The only limit to our realization of tomorrow will be our doubts of today. Let us MOVE FORWARD with STRONG and ACTIVE FAITH. CTaken from the last written words of President Roosevelt, found the day after his death.J
