Several thousand years later during the ice age huge glaciers covered this area and deposited more rock and dirt. The weight of this deposited earth and that of the ice itself pressed this low grade of coal into the high grade of anthracite found in the region today Coal mining is almost as old as civili zation itself Marco Polo found the Chinese mining coal when he made his historic travels in the Orient His dis covery however did not benefit Europe because it was several hundred years before the coal industry was started there When the Spanish conquerors came to South America they found the lncas engaged in mining coal to make Jewelry and to keep the sacred fires in the temples burning and not for heating the homes or cooking Before Columbus discovered America coal mining was rather wide spread in Europe There were coal mines in France in the Saar Basin in Wales and in Poland The coal mining industry in the United States like the oil industry was begun in Pennsylvania in this region about 1800 Shafts in these early coal mines were not very deep they re sembled the coal holes which are so numerous around here Most of the labor in these mines and in the breakers was done by men and boys. Machines were not known and mules were used to haul cars inside the shafts. This made coal mining a slow hard job. Since that time the use of electricity and many modern inventions have made the mining of coal comparatively easy and have greatly increased the scope and importance of this industry. Class ln September l938, eighty ambitious pupils entered Conyngham Township High School as members of the Presh- man Class. At our first class meeting we elected Miss McDonnell and Mr. Mc- Donald as our class advisers. At that time we elected the following officers: Lois Shank, Presidentg Charles Curran, Vice President: Blanche Moser, Secre- taryg Paine Keller, Treasurer. Under the guidance of Mr. Linetty and Mr. McDonald our history class made an educational trip to Bloomsburg Court House and returned with better ideas as to how our government is run. In the course of our first year in high school our class decreased to fifty-four members. ACT II Sophomore Class lNhen we returned to school in the fall of l939, our class of sixty-two mem- lers immediately went about the task of electing class officers. We chose the following: George Wagner, Presidentg Stephen f-lerko, Vice President: Anna Dougherty, Secretaryy Paine Keller, Treasurer. Our first social event was a skating party held at the Midway on October 20, 1939. Other social events held later in the term proved successful both financially and socially. With final examinations completed we found ourselves one step higher on the ladder to our goal-graduation. ACT III Iunior Class Upon entering our third year of high school, our first problem was to elect class officers. We held a class meeting on September 6, l94O and elected lean Metzinger, Presidentg Stephen Herko, Vice Presidenty Betty Owens, Secretaryg and Paine Keller, Treasurer. After final examinations in Iune, we planned to enjoy a well earned vaca- tion and returned to play our roles in the last act of our drama-Senior Class. ACT IV Senior Class ln September, l94l, our class of forty- six pupils returned to school prepared to work harder than ever before. On October 3, we held a meeting and elected the following officers: George Wagner, Presidentg lean Metzinger, Vice Presidentg Betty Owens, Secretary: Fame Keller, Treasurer. At this time we chose our class colorseftoyal Blue and White. On November 9, we held a joint meet- ing with the Sophomore Class and a bingo party was planned for December 16, l94l. lt proved successful and we planned to hold others. All members of the graduating class had the opportunity to sell Christmas cards and candy, to earn money to finance part of their graduation ex- penses. We were proud of our caps, pen- nants, and emblems but we also realiz- ed that graduation was drawing near. Our name cards arrived on March l0 and all the pupils were anxious to re- ceive them as remembrances of the Class of '42. A timely and novel three-act comedy, America First , was presented on April 30 by members of the Senior Class. This was a play of 100 per cent Americans, who find themselves embroiled in the subversive activities of a group of aliens, out to corrupt the ideals of Amer- ican youth. We wish all members of the Senior Class a very successful future and hope that they will profit by what they have learned during the four years they at- tended our Alma Mater. llnrrp lie-lly, Ilarry Lvnu Iuul I-run er Sta-lnimkie-. Much credit for the impressive work on the court must go to Coach Loretta Horan and her able assistant, Ioseph Linetty. These two working together with a squad of only fifteen players molded together a sextet that was one of the greatest ever to wear the Blue and Gold. N t 1 L Captain Lois Shank, who playing on the varsity for four consecutive years, displayed her talents offensively having 244 points to her credit. Leona Burk- evage with 92 points and Gertrude Kreisher, with l4l points, until lost to the team with an attack of appendicitis, also proved their talents. The position vacated by Gertrude Kreisher was handled capably by Dolores Houser, Betty Blass, and Romayne Shoup. Needless to say, defensively our team had talented stars in Agnes Shirey, Ruth Hart, and Helen Yanescavage. Munitions are not just planes pow- der and shells but also food clothing medical supplies and other commodi- ties which are needed to take care of civilian as well as military require- ments. Fuel naturally becomes a part of the Defense material category as aside from the Contribution of fuel to power transportation and commercial and cantonment heating needs the peo- ple who produce munitions and the necessities of normal life rnust be sup- plied with heat hot water and cooking fue . Coal is used in the manufacture of ships tanks airplanes guns and elec- tricity all of which are necessary for National Defense Iron taken from the earth is mixed with dirt and other particles which must be removed because they would ruin it lt is then fed into a chimney between layers of coke and limestone and the impurities are removed by heat Then it is folded into small molds This iron still contains a large amount of carbon and to make steel a certain percentage must be removed and this is done by putting the iron into large blazing fur naces which are kept going by coal When these steel Ingots cool they are heated to be softened so they can be passed for different instruments of Defense Iron and steel are used in the manufacture of tanks coverings for bombs ships airplanes and guns Then there is the interesting discov ery of Nylon which is made from coal air and water lt is a man made protein like chemical product which may be formed into fibers characterized by extreme toughness elasticity and strength The phrase protein like simply means that it has somewhat the same chemical composition as silk hair and wool. Until the development of Nylon silk was the only textile fiber which pos- sessed the combined strength and elas- ticity demanded of yarn for fine hosiery. But Nylon has silk beaten in both strength and elasticity. Resistance to water is another of its virtues. Nylon may be used in making parachutes and balloons. To operate railroads we must have coal and railroads are a necessity to the the defense plants because they carry the raw materials to the plants and then the finished war materials to the army posts and air bases. Hers they 1 , , ZACEPLIVLIQFLILSS THEY 3925235 QQ Q On November 15, 1940, members of the Conyngham Township High School faculty met and decided to organize a band. They decided to sponsor social activities for the benefit of the Band. After several successful ventures, enough money was obtained and Miss Brennan, our music supervisor, bought instruments in January. Interest in the project increased and in April she pur- chased instruments to complete the in- strumentation. Under the capable instruction of Miss Brennan, the band members soon learn- ed to play their chosen instruments well enough to have regular rehearsals, which were continued through the sum- mer. When school reopened in Sep- tember, the band looked forward to a successful year. During the school term they made much progress: they were invited to play at several basketball games and now are looking forward eagerly to their first concert. Several undergraduate girls are now beng trained as drum majorettes by Miss Brennan and in the near future we shall see some fancy baton twirling by these beautiful maidens. A Patriotic Program was presented in the school auditorium on February 23, 1942. At that time the members of the club sang several songs in a manner that was truly inspiring. Since all have a Wonderful spirit of cooperation and are interested in the development ot an appreciation of bet- ter music they will participate this year in the County Glee Club held at Blooms- burg in May. The purposes of the organization are to broaden its members' interest in music and to instruct them in various styles of group singing, accompanied and unaccompanied. Because this club is not only a means of acquiring a knowledge of music but also a source of pleasure, it is our sin- cere desire to ccntinue this study. We hope fhat all underggtadurxtes will be in- tensely interested in music for it brings happiness to the lieafts ol all. It's An Honor to Belong The aim of the Press Club this year has been to secure greater student participation in the field of high school journalism. On October 25, 1941, a meeting was called to order by the Editor-in-Chief, Dolores Hauser, for the purpose of electing officers to assume the duties of the seniors who graduated. Arrangements were made to begin work on the November issue which was to be published for Thanksgiving. The Conyngham Highlights was published under the able supervision of Miss Kealy, Mrs. Martz, and Miss McDonnell, members of the high school faculty, and the Editorial Staff. Now that it is time for the seniors of '42 to depart, we wish success to the students who are responsible for the planning and editing of our school paper. All girls in the Senior and Iunior classes who were interested in helping the Red Cross by knitting sweaters, mutflers, and other wearing apparel for soldiers in our armed forces, were given the privilege of joining. Girls who were unable to knit were given instructions by Miss Heiiner, and in a short time they proved to be proficient knitters. Wool obtained from the Mount Carmel chapter of the Red Cross was quickly used by the girls, which proved that those who enrolled were very enthusiastic about their work Finished garments were sent to the Red Cross Headquarters where they were greatly appreciated by those in charge Now that the present school term is drawing to a close we hope that the girls in the other classes will follow our example and enroll in the Victory Club to aid our country in this crisis I Left to Right Alberta Lmetty Anna.
