Whether we prefer to dance to the latest hits at record hops, sit back and relax to a stereo recording of a great opera, or try to imagine what Grandfather's teens were like as we listen to sentimental ballads of the 189O's, We realize that songs have helped make all our lives more enjoyable. lllbilli E GO yg Hyfval, ,'ist 7 , , Av. From a few spirited demonstrations, We learned that the dynamic instigator was none other than Mr. Suomi. The competitive atmosphere aroused by his challenges among home rooms has been a large factor in the growing Cony spirit. This lively man has the great responsibility of being the head adviser for the senior class, a job in itself. Therefore, in appreciation of his admirable spirit and leadership, We are pleased to dedicate the 1960 Coniad to Mr. Into Suomi. 3 CC 1 iii!-3f,f9 99 . NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Every spring, the Cony faculty selects 15 percent of the seniors from the upper quarter of their class and a few top-ranking juniors to join the National Honor Society. This great honor is awarded on the basis of character, scholarship, leadership, and service. The seniors who were chosen in their junior year preside at the solemn initiation of the new members. They sit on the stage around a table, on which are the yellow roses of the society, and four candles in the society colors: red, yel- low, purple, and white. After the seniors give a short explanation of the significance of each candle, they tap the new members three times on the shoulder and escort them to the stage as soft music is played. Miss McAllister leads all the members in the pledge. This year, the assembly was on Friday, May 6. NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY First Row: V. Swain, M. Hussey, M. Farrington, B. Flewelling, S. jenkins. We will try to bear up, although we will surely miss our boss, Mr. Croxfordg the terror of the science lab, Mr. Turnerg and that little man with the big tests, Mr. Salisbury. Seriously, as we remember with a possible tear in our eye all the pleasant good times we have had with the faculty, let us think back to the first day we came. After we green freshmen discovered that girls' gym classes were not held in the boys' locker room, and that seniors were not the ones to make out library passes, we did all right and settled down to our first year at Cony. Freshman assemblies each Wednesday helped us choose our leaders. Our president was David Elving vice-president, Mike Napolitano, and secretary, Linda Gray. For student council representatives, we selected Diane Hinkley and Sumner Daniels. Freshman Reception was a new experience for most of us. After trying unsuccessfully to out-yell the sophomores, we picked Judy Brann and Sumner Daniels king and queen. The sports season got under way almost at once. Coaches Pruett and Cyr gave many a varsity football star his start on the frosh team. Cheering them on to defeat were the freshman cheerleaders, Patty Murray, Carolyn DeVoe, Michelle Dionne, Clare Evers, Jane Fallona, Diane Plummer, and Judy Weymouth. At the varsity games Linda Gray, Diane Hinkley, and Donna Lee Litchfield twirled their batons to the music of a band that included many freshmen. Mrs. Devina Mudge patiently taught us to waltz, fox trot, and iitterbug at Freshman Dancing Classes. The freshman basketball team, coached by Mr. Soule, showed promise of this year's successful season, winning eight games out of twelve. As spring approached, we began work on our first Chizzle Wizzle. In the dancing chorus were Linda Gray, Diane Hinkley, Donna Lee Litchfield, Lorna Pelkey, and Diane Plummer. Our booth chairman was Cony Church. Sumner Daniels represented our class in the play Father Knows Best. A few more daring members of the class ventured to the ball. All in all, Chizzle Wizzle was Out of This World. Sharon Jenkins won the State Poetry Contest. George Nason won the fresh- man spelling contest. For typical students, we elected Diane Hinkley and Mike Napolitano. The summer flew by, as summers have a way of doing, and before we knew it, we were back at the old Amusement Park as sophomores. At least we now had one class to lord it over. Our class oflicers that year were Mike Napolitano, presidentg Bill Kinsman, vice president, and Clare Evers, secretary. Our student council members were Joyce Buck, secretary, Cony Church, and Helen Stickney. 70 r2.ff.,..,, it., W... fin. Ar. Q-+..u.t5...4-4k.1-.6...u- nw? Z' - 5- 'Ja-ba mmf-Jiwfv-A-LL, MARGARETTE MILLER FRANCIS BELLANIX This year Cony High School received a unique award-one which will not come again to the State of Maine for fifty years. The Francis Bellamy Award of the first fifty-star flag to fly over the nation's capital and a commemorative plaque is now to rest in Cony. This award was estab- lished by Margarette Miller of Portsmouth, Virginia in 1942. Miss Miller proved that Francis Bellamy, the young magazine writer, wrote the original pledge to the Hag in 1892 for a patriotic edition of the Youtlz's Companion. In 1957, the United States Congress added the two words under God to the pledge. Quoting from a letter from Miss Miller, the donor of the award, Cony was Chosen as the representative school of Maine because of: The proficiency of performance of duty by the principalg the accomplishments of the alumni in varied fields of endeavor, particularly in government, education, the arts, sports, and the armed forces, the stressing of good citizenship in the school and the community made apparent by the continued success of the annual Chizzle 1Vizzle Fairg and the remarkable work of the faculty in turning out students accomplished in the sciences--far in excess of the average school. Already we have received congratulatory messages from outstanding citizens all over the country. In October 1960 the presentation of the flag will take place. It will be a memorable occasion with dignitaries and student representatives from different parts of the United States. Cony and its students can not help but be proud of this high honor. Students, graduates, and faculty have made Cony an outstanding school. 71 ly.a..L,.,.w.,4..4.1.',-334-3......ffj A It felt good to be on the other side of the gym for Freshman Reception. The football season started right away with Sally Partridge, Carolyn DeVoe, and Jane Fallona cheering for the team. Sharon Taylor was a new majorette. Pat MacFarland received his varsity football letter. Pete Morgan was president of Latin Club. George Nason and Martha Farrington won the XVCTU Essay Contest. This year, Bud Folsom started work on the Teen-Age Code. We elected Kathy O'Donnell and Pat MacFarland to help, write the one for Augusta. The 1958 Chizzle Wizzle theme was Stopover Stateside. Sally Partridge joined the dancing chorus, while Mike Napolitano was chairman of a Hawaii Sophomore Booth. In the play Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Court were sophomores Iudy Weymouth and Kathy O'Donnell. Earning varsity baseball letters were Mike Napolitano and Dick Small. Diane Hinkley and Mike Napolitano were again typical students. The next fall found us upperclassmen. There was a sad note to start off this year-Mr. Taylor, our science teacher, died. Among new teachers were Mr. Bishop and a new football coach, Mr. Whytock. Our slate of officers included President Bill Browne, Vice-President Pat MacFarland, and Secretary Carolyn DeVoe. Up at bat for us in the student council were Kathy O'Donnell, Barbara Burdzell, Sumner Daniels, and Dave Elvin. We beat our 1957 record in football by two games. We won the Gardiner game 19-7, regaining possession of the coveted boot. New cheerleaders were Diane Plummer, Dotty Bodrigue, and Judy VVeymouth. Varsity lettermen included Doug Allen, Bill Browne, Bob Gosselin, Bill Howe, and Bay Boy. Kathy O'Donnell and Anne Bell joined the majorettes, headed by Diane Hinkley and Donna Lee Litch- field. Lettermen Mike Napolitano, Dick Small, and Dick Winslow helped our basketball team in a promising season, managed by jim Schmidt. Bonnie Godbout was president of the Art Club and Ken Young, of the Debate Club. As mid-term grades rolled around, the students on the high honor roll discovered they would get gold certificates. Many members of our class took part in the Sixty-eighth Chizzle Wizzle, with its theme Once Upon a Time. On the executive committee were Bill Browne, vice president, Mike Napolitano, assistant treasurer, and Carolyn DeVoe. The play, Unguided Miss, starred Sumner Daniels, Martha Farrington, Barbara Field, jeff Huntsman, Myra Pollack, and Judy Weymouth. lim Schmidt served as our booth chairman. The ball was especially lovely with decorations of birds, balloons, and crepe paper. Our baseball team had a successful season. Earning varsity letters were Ed Murrell and Glen Patterson. 72 OUR HONOR STUDENTS Seated: B. Flewelling, J. Vigue Standing: M. Napolitano, E. Typical students were again Diane Hinkley and Mike Napolitano. The junior Prom, at the end of May, was a big success, rewarding the members of our class who had worked so hard to give the seniors a big sendoff. lt was hard to believe last September that we were finally seniors. Our senior year will live forever in our hearts as the year those handsome new teachers, Mr. Dyer and Mr. Marcous, hit Cony, and the year the school bought a new pencil Sharpener for the cafeteria. VVe were sorry to see that Miss Hale had left us. Mr. Sturtevant took over as publicity director for Cony. Another addition was the sprinkler system installed in every room. To guide us in our last hectic year, we chose for class president jim Schmidt, vice president, Cony Church, and secretary, Marjorie Hussey. Some other members of our class gave behind-the-scenes help by making pictures and wastebaskets dance around the stage. The 1959-60 basketball season was the most successful of our years at Cony, Aided by Co-Captains Mike Napolitano and Dick lVinslow, we went to the Bangor tournament only to lose a heartbreaker to Brewer, Eastern Maine's top team, 82-56. In every description of a 1959 Cony football game, certain words appear again and again: come-from-behind win, the Touchdown Twins, determined team, strong line, and a pass for pay-dirt. Through the season, weather and injuries were our outstanding enemies. With blue sky and a full team we could not be beaten. Lively rallies, high-lighted by home-room stunts, did much to increase attendance and spirit. A team of devoted football players found excellent leadership in Coaches Robert VVhytock and Leroy Dyer. Next year's team will miss these seniors: Bill Browne, Doug Allen, Iohn Smith, Bill Howe, Pat MacFarland, Ray Roy, Dick Small, Bob Gosselin, George Demos, Dave Caron, Dennis Finnemore, and Lou Boucher. However, prospects for 1960 are good with twelve lettermen returning. BASEBALL Varsity baseball, under Phil Clark, is in full swing at the time of this writing. The Rams, aided by many veterans, have shown the spectators some good baseball thus far. In the opener, lVaterville scored a 4-3 victory in a thrill-packed game. The Rams had a few opportunities to pull the game out of the Fire, but lost, although they out-hit the Panthers 9-8. The Rams bounced back in the second game to beat Rockland 7-3, behind the six-hit pitching of Paul Auger. In the third game, which was at Brunswick, the Rams had a Held day, collecting six hits while the Dragons made nine errors. YVe scored a 15-9 victory. Dick Small hit a triple and Frank Loiko pitched a six-hitter. If the Rams can continue for the remainder of the season in this form, the team will be proud of its record. TRACK It looks this year as if Coach Dana Dogerty will have a good track team to participate in the spring schedule of nine meets. Leading the trackmen will be veteran Ray Roy, 100 yard dash man and low hurdler. Gary Grimshaw will possibly give Roy stiff competition. Dave Carey could be Cony's leading 440 specialist, and Mike Radcliffe will probably be the leader in the 880 and broad jump along with Dennis Finnemore, a third place winner in the State Meet last year. Bill Howe will try to be a ten-foot plus pole vaulter, while Bob Gosselin and Cony Church will be the Rams' weight men. The Ram trackmen should be in top form this year and should win the K.V.C. meet late in the season. SCHEDULE Hebron Waterville Rockland Colby Frosh Gould Academy Winslow K.V.C. Kents Hill Gardiner State Meet 102 of' if , -dv .7 ,, I. Williamson, P. Morgan, D. Williamson, W. Howe, I. O'Donnell, W. Gilfillan. GOLF There was a good turnout for the golf team this year. The six members chosen by Coach Fran Parker to represent Cony on the links are Pete Morgan, Joe YVilliamson, Bill Giliillan, lim O'Donnell, Fred Tobias, and Dean Booker. The team plays ten matches this season with Brunswick, Bath, Edward Little, Lewiston, and Rockland. All practices and home matches take place at the Augusta Country Club. The beginning has not been too auspicious with the loss of the First match at Brunswick. We will keep our lingers crossed that experiences will prove a good teacher! 103 FIELD HOCKEY The girls Held hockey team, alias the mud-pie girls, did not have a too impressive season this year. Although the girls had many practices, intrascholastic games, and exercising drills, they could not seem to get the winning score. The girls had some very close games in which their ability to play ball Well was evident. Five of the outstanding players on the team played in the All Star games at Portland this year. They included Diane Learned, Kathy O'Donnell, Janice Holt, Dottie Rodrique, and Clare Evers. Many of the girls on the team are seniors and will never play for Cony again, so they want to wish their Wonderful coach, Mrs. Walton, the best of luck with her future teams! STUDENT COUNCIL Every week our Student Council, comprised of two girls and two boys from each class, meets in Room G with Miss McAllister, the advisor. In the course of the school year, the council nominates the officers of Chizzle Wizzle, approves the athletic awards, and takes a hand in the many other affairs of school gov- ernment. Under its able president, David Elvin, our busy Student Council, quietly and without fanfare, performs its tasks. STUDENT COUNCIL SENIOR STUDENT COUNCIL MEMBERS First Row: K. O'Donnell, B. Field. The endmen Were outstanding, particularly in the endmen's specialty. The chorus and the olios were the best in years. Instead of a three-act play, we had two one-act plays this year. Due to the hard Work of the student body and faculty the fair Was a financial as Well as artistic success. Through the clubs at Cony a student may acquire information, pursue interests, develop his talents, and meet other people who share his interests. Our language and science clubs give their members a chance to learn more about the backgrounds and practical applications of the subjects. These organiza- tions give in a painless manner, information which the teachers cannot possibly find time to impart in the classroom. Many clubs, such as the Debate Club and the Future Teachers of America, give their members an opportunity to devote their time to developing their talents. Through these clubs many students have an opportunity to learn by practice what the work in these fields is like. ' The Triple C is perhaps one of the best known clubs at Cony. The club's sale of Cony book covers helps to protect the school books while promoting the school spirit. At their meetings, there is usually a speaker who talks about some phase of the business world. Cony is fortunate in having so many active clubs which contribute a great deal to its school spirit and atmosphere of friendliness. At Cony a club is not just a, group of people but a vital part of the school. 136 FIRST NATIONAL GRANITE BANK OF AUGUSTA - Invites You To - enjoy the many services of this Bank We will anticipate a visit from you in the near future Single accounts insured by the Federal Deposit Insurance Coroporation up to S10,000.00.
