In fond memory of our beloved class- mate, Burtina Lee Cross, who passed away on July 29, 1956 after a long illness, we, the Class of 1959, pause to pay tribute to her many achievements while in our class. An active member of the Clee Club and Chizzle Wizzle Chorus, Tina was a friend to all, it was always a pleasure to have her company. May we always aspire to follow her example, maintaining her high ideals and always keeping a smile no matter what the challenge. i 4-fy.-W ,. ,,,,,,,, X K, We also remember our faithful science teacher, Mr. Donald C. Taylor, who passed away quite unexpectedly September 7, 1958. Mr. Taylor was not only an inter- ested teacher, but also a devoted family man and an active community worker. Al- though he was only here at Cony for two years, he had secured the respect of all his students and fellow-faculty members, and his death was a great loss to us all. DEDICATION We, the Class of 1959, proudly dedicate our Coniad to Mr. Charles Arbor, Head of the Social Studies Department here at Cony and one of our senior class advisors. During our four years at Cony, Mr. Arbor has enlivened the halls of this school with his timely comments, his jokes about his loving Wife, and his friendly smile. Another of his many contributions to the school is his position as coach of the football team and basketball team. In this capacity he has made each of the boys feel right at home and has given the encouragement so badly needed. As We leave Cony this year and go our separate Ways, We will remember Mr. Arbor and all his kindnesses. His favorite pastime aff Q rf ivmcie,-rn Seite ' sf, 5' Y A - - ' 'V if . ' t ,,Q , f mxxsswwfit 51 new If X F OREWORD .... During our four years at Cony every one of us has read many magazines and books. To each a magazine has its own particular meaning. To some, a magazine may be the source of the latest fashions or the newest look in sports cars. To others, it may be a reference for the most recent developments in science. VVe have all learned from magazines, and We have all enjoyed leisure time through them. Thus, the members of the 1959 Coniad Staff have chosen magazines as an appropriate theme for our yearbook. 4 6 ? Perkins and the Harvard Book Club awards are made. At the Last Chapel, held this year on Wednesday morning, June 3, in the auditorium of Cony is the time when the Senior Class President presents his gavel to the Junior Class President who in turn replies with a speech of acceptance. The Last VVill and Testament of the boys and girls is read, as well as the Class History. On this same evening the seniors attend a lawn party held this year for the first time at 19 Stone Street, or if the weather is inclement, it will be in the Cony gym. At this time the class gifts committee presents each senior with a small gift, usually a joke, that will be long remembered. On Saturday evening, June 6, the Senior Banquet is held at the Augusta House. The Class Prophecies are read and the seniors receive their CONIADS. On the following evening, Baccalaureate exercises take place at the high school. A prominent citizen of Maine delivers the Baccalaureate address at this time. At last The Day arrives! Graduation exercises take place at the Augusta Armory on Thursday evening, June 11. After the speeches and awards are pre- sented, the impressive Athenian Oath is recited by the class. At last, diplomas in hand, our class realizes that they are now - alumni of Cony High. 74 f iw' 45 as N ,A ,, - we-Q wt, rags ' x . as X X A swam .if - -X ,Q - s . , , 1, X- , M .4-7 x 4-.kxwx N S Ji X N , . NATIONAL HONOR SOCIETY Each spring 25 per cent of the upper third of the senior class and a few top-ranking juniors are chosen by the faculty to become members of the National Honor Society. This is about the highest honor one can receive from Cony, as it is one based not only on scholarship, but also on leadership, character, and service. The National Honor Assembly is a very solemn and impressive one. Seated on the stage about a table, on which are the yellow roses of the society and four candles, are the members chosen their junior year. They light four candles and deliver a short explanation on the qualification symbolized by their light. While soft music plays, the members escort to the platform those students who have been tapped three times on the shoulder. The iinal act of the pledge ends the ceremony. On Monday, May ll, this assembly will be held. 78 CLASS HISTORY BY SALLY HANSON After faithfully sewing our sentence of a minimum of four years and a maxi- mum of six years, We, the inmates of Cell Block ,59 are joyfully leaving this penitentiary. As we look back over the years of our imprisonment, we laugh over all of the things we have gone through. Remember our very first day when we straggled into Cony with our eyes wide open . . . to say nothing of our mouths! How shocked we were to discover that all the stories we'd heard about the upper- classmen sending us on wild-goose chases were true! Many of us learned from experience that Room 32 wasn't the place in the boiler room where the male teachers congregated and that 'gCabby Hayes wasnit really employed as a teacher here. How inferior we felt at our first assembly, when, sitting up in the peanut galleryf, we were given a cool once over by the seniors. VVhat we wouldnit have given to have been able to tell them that the stage was in front of them! Something new awaited the frosh boys in the cafeteria . . . they had to pay money for the privilege of eating at certain tables! However, it didn't take long for us to wise up to the pranks of our elders, and soon We were accustomed to the schedule before us. To start our sentence off right, we elected Ross McLean as President of our class with Paul Chaplin serving as Vice-President and Mary McFadden as Sec- retary-Treasurer. Representing us on the Student Council were Sara Coughlin, Molly Giddings, Bob Hess, and Ross McLean. With the start of school came the annual Freshman Dancing Classes. Under the patient guidance of Mrs. Devina Mudge, we soon were able to join the upper- classmen on the dance Hoor. The frosh boys did well in both football and basketball this yea.r, and a large number of them soon appeared on the varsity squad. This year we experienced a new practice with which we could have done without . . . MID-YEARS!! However, most of us passed them with flying colors! fSounds good, anyway!Q One good thing about being freshmen was that we had double the assemblies that the upperclassmen had! On many a Wednesday noon we met in 32 where we learned about the functions of Cony. At last the time came for our first Chizzle Wizzle. It seemed great to be a part of the show which we had heard about so often in grammar school. Bruce Bunker did a terrific job as the chairman of our booth. Several of us even got up enough nerve to attend the ball. Jean Hunt and Bruce Bunker won the Typical Student Awards this year. Graduation was not far away, but we didn't think much about it because for us it was four years away . . . forever! Before we knew it, the summer had passed and we were preparing to return to Cony as upper-under classmen. At least we could sit downstairs for the assemblies! Our sophomoreyear we chose Don McCabe to serve as our President, with 79 ,J , A f 'J ef' 'mln . x gr qw fm ,,' ' : f . ' Z'- 4? Wi 1 'WX 4 ,mf kfig H, Q ,few 'El' .5-K ? WW 'WW' M. ,,.., Ea Siva-A s. Cheering them on to victory were five peppy cheerleaders from the sophomore class: Elaine Murphy, April Campbell, Sara Coughlin, Molly Ciddings, and jackie Fairfield. The Future Teachers Club of America was formed our sophomore year and several of us became charter members. Pat Lawrence and Sally Hanson won the VV .C.T.U. Essay Contest this year. Eight members of our class were players on the junior varsity basketball team, which enjoyed a highly successful season, This year the Teen-Age Safety Council was formed and as our representa- tives we chose April Campbell and Roger Brewer. Ross McLean served as President of Latin Club this year. Another Chizzle Wizzle soon came into being. Don McCabe expertly headed our sophomore booth in a Chizzle Wizzle that was really Out of This 'Worldfi Awarded the Typical Student Awards were Molly C-iddings and Bruce Bunker. The year passed quickly and after a short vacation, we once again returned to school . . . this time in the capacity of big juniors! For class officers, we elected Paul Rodrigue as President, Ross McLean as Veep,,' and Sara Coughlin as Secretary-Treasurer. Toni Miskavage, Molly Ciddings, Pat Lawrence, and Don McCabe repre- sented the junior class very well on the Student Council. This year we contributed three more players to the varsity football team. Although they had a losing season, the boys had high hopes for next year. Bob Hess and Vin Tschamler joined the varsity basketball team and both saw much action. Our class was very active in Stopover Statesidef, the Chizzle Wizzle pro- duction of 1958. Bob Hess and his freckles were a big hit as he performed as an endman. Bruce Bunker was chairman of our booth, Cool Cavernsf, Represent- ing us on the executive committee were Jackie Fairfield, Don McCabe, and Pat Lawrence. Cary Campbell and Vin Tschamler were our contributions to the varsity baseball team this year. A new addition to our football team was introduced this year . . . Rameses III. He was even nick-named . . . Freddy-Franny. Ethel Annis, Judie Mendall, Lila Stevens, Elaine Murphy, Eileen Murphy, and Carol Greig played varsity field hockey. 83 Proving themselves great actors and actresses were the following who gave a starry performance in our 'senior play g'State F airf' Leslie Maxwell, Elaine Murphy, Toby Goldberg, .Melicent Chapman, ,lackie Fairfield, Roger Brewer, Sumner Lipman, jimmy' Drum, jerry Bechard, Cordon Corbett, and Bruce Bunker. Many awards and presentations are yet to be announced, but these will have to be remembered because the publishers are waiting . . . impatiently! There it is . . . the history of our entire sentence! We, the class of 1959, are about to bid good-bye to Cony. When we think in retrospect of the years we have spent here, it is not the discouraging or unpleasant aspects, but rather our congenial experiences that come crowding into our minds. We are greatly in- debted to Cony and what it has given to us these past years. We can never repay this debt in full, but we can make a beginning by working to the greatest of our ability in this world we are about to enter. This is one of the last times that we shall be all united together as a group, but let each of us proudly preserve the ties of friendship and good feeling which -the past years have established with Cony. 84 fsglrczzif .M f 'int M4 'ff f fn-'5274Qff 0' 4 mi f 'ff 'f , , .a,fffw,f4mM , L. ORCHESTRA The orchestra, also directed by Mr. Danforth, began its season with an ex- change concert with South Portland playing there in November and here in December. This was a busy season for the orchestra, as they also played for the Senior Play and prepared for K.V. Some of its members also went to All-State, an honor for any participant. The orchestra consisted of forty members who worked hard to produce good music for assemblies, plays. and the exchange in the spring with XVinthrop, Massachusetts. It was a Fine orchestrag and with most of its members returning next year, it should become even better. 'X X X y. When it rained, We had spirit to spare along with the mud. The season Was brought to a climax with the traditional rivalry game between Cony and Gardiner. This yearls game was played in Gardiner, but the boys played hard and came home with a spectacular victory over the Tigers, 19-7. This con- quest enabled us to take the boot into our possession for the first time. Letis hope it stays there forever! MF? 129 fo V' K f ' ,-,fifq-jg 3471. I Mf' M .Q !kl..,. ! V E ' 3gi ,. All the boys Worked diligently together to win nine games while losing only six. Even in the six games lost, Cony fought to the finish and only the X breaks at the right time determined the Winner. We Were all proud of the Way our team never gave up and always played with good sportsmanship. Only a few veterans have returned this year, but the underclassmen are shaping up and are capable of placing. The track team is working hard every day. They will do a great job if luck is with them. A few of the members who are bound to prove valuable this year are Ray Roy in the dashes, Larry Baker with the discus, Bud Walycott with the shot-put, David Carey in the dashes, Nelson Bean with shot-put, and Dennis Finnemore in pole-vaulting. The veterans contribute most of the power to the team. Vin Tschamler, Dick Small, Cary Campbell, Mike Napolitano, John McDonald, Dick Winslow are a few of the veterans returning. This year we expect the team to do a great job. Under the able coaching of Phil Clark the team always manages to have a good spirit. It always seems a shame that with the good teams and good coach- ing, there is not a better turnout of student spectators. Nevertheless, the Cony baseball teams are always a credit to their school. The girls in this program may participate in all the events such as hockey, basketball and softball, just as the varsity players do. Badminton, table tennis, deck tennis, and volleyball are played in the spring. Girls can be seen climbing the ropes, jumping the horse, or bouncing on the trampoline in the Winter. These activities are all planned by the G.P.E, Club and supervised by Mrs. VValton. The managers are all members of G.P.E. who prove their capabilities by the large number of girls who participate. Each May at a special awards assembly great numbers of girls receive nu- merals, letters, and Maine pins under the State Point System. GIRLS' INTRAMURALS Front: K. O'Donnell, C. Evers, T. Ax.-'KG-f f f 1 1 ' FIELD HOCKEY Under the direction of their coach, Mrs. YValt0n, the Held hockey team of the 1958-1959 season really had an eventful year. Almost every afternoon, wet or dry, the girls would he out on the Held practicing. Building exercises, drills, scrimmages and interscholastic games gave them the necessary practice to im- prove their plays and increase their skills in diHicult places. About thirty-four girls went out for the team which in itself was a good sign. The varsity teain finished a very active season with a record of live Wins and three losses. The girls were praised for theirflashy offensive form and strong defense. To close the season, seven Cony girls were chosen to play in All Star game, between the Northern and Southern teams. The play off was in Farmington. VARSITY HOCKEY Front How: Ni. Clew, I. Vigue, P. Ohler, D. Hinckley, C. Evers, M, Dionne, D. Roderigue. Brick How: J. McLaughlin, E. Annis, L. Stevens, Ei. Although the varsity girls didn,t have a very successful season this year, they had much spirit and tried their very best. They held many practice sessions afternoons with their coach, Mrs. Walton. Lila Stevens, an outstanding player, had a total of 137 points, the greatest number of any player. The girls all Worked hard and deserve a lot of praise for their efforts. The junior varsity team Was, however, quite successful Winning six of their eight games. With this record, the future for the girls basketball games looks very promising. 142 VARSITY Cony Opp. 25 Winthrop 33 27 Kents Hill 40 39 Winslow 43 42 Winthrop 56 45 Lewiston 60 40 Winslow 44 48 Lewiston 58 40 Kents Hill 48 I.V.'s C ony Opp 33 Winthrop 1 1 29 Kents Hill 37 21 Winslow 12 23 Winthrop 20 33 Lewiston 45 29 Winslow 12 25 Lewiston 9 29 Ke-nts Hill 22 l l JUNIOR VARSITY Front Row: M. ' ' ' GIRLS' SPRING SPORTS The time between April and the close of school is a busy one for Cony sports-minded girls. Some ninety to a hundred comprise eight volleyball teams. Under the guidance of some G.P.E. members, a double round robin tournament is run off in April followed by inter-class games. Iust before spring vacation, swimming was started at the Y. Meeting twice a week, the girls learn the fundamental strokes and diving and do some racing. As soon as the fields are ready, archery and softball get underway. A two- way archery meet is planned to be held with Kents Hill. 144 Front How: L. Pelkey, K. O'Donnell, S. Koral, E. Annis. Buck Row: L. Stevens, S. Pratt, C. Evers, I. Vigue, M. Hussey SOFTBALL The Varsity Softball activities are not very extensive as far as competition is concerned. XVe only play two games a year with Kents Hill. These games give the girls a great deal of fun and experience as well as build up good health. Many girls get a chance to participate in this program and Mrs. Walton usually uses them all in one of the two games. The two games with Kents Hill establish a friendly relationship between the two schools. Usually we are well entertained when we visit them, and we try to do likewise with cookies and punch. The results of last year's games were satisfying to each school as the varsity team lost the first game 13-8 and won the second, 9-35 the I.V. also lost the Erst game 16-1 and won the second, 18-5. 145 And now, as we come to the end of this CONIAD, we realize that these doors of Cony are about to close behind the Class of 1959 for the last time. We close them, knowing that We have left behind a host of memories - a host of impressions from teachers and friends - a host of dreams but partially realized. We close them on our errors, our attainments, our disappointments, our triumphs. But We open them to a broader vision of life, to a World inviting us to do our best, and to the opportunities to make all our dreams come true. 146 Compnmems of Compliments Of SANBORN and SANBORN FRANK POMERLEAU Attorneys-at-Law SCA 5.
