Each has a special place in our hearts and will not soon be forgotten. These spots have also become familiar scenes to the older set as uhangoutsn of yesteryear. There is no doubt that these places will occupy a spe- cial part in the lives of the generations to follow. Thus, the members of the 1958 Coniad Staff have chosen Well-remembered Spotsv as a fitting theme for this, our yearbook. 2 Dedication We, the class of 1958, proudly dedicate our Coniad to Mrs. Ethel Hopkins, who has given so much to Cony throughout the years. Her courage and cheer- fulness, especially during her recent ill luck, can well be copied by us all. We sincerely hope that this one small tribute will serve to show that we are mindful of her many services so generously rendered to us. 3 f 5fW2mfaff SUPERINTENDENT PERRY SHIBLES AND PRINCIPAL HORACE CROXFORD. Such things as the French Club Holly Sale, the Latin Club Exchange Program, the novel dances by the French and Spanish Clubs, and the Art Club Roller Rink Parties provide a lot of fun for all. The Triple C contributed new style book covers for us this year, too. Our newest club, the F NA, had an excellent health career assembly while the FTA is providing wonderful opportunities for practice teaching in the city schools. Surely in later years when we think of our clubs, we will remember with fondness the many happy hours they gave us. 76 5, x K , f , my 'mul' , ,JJ ,Ma ,gg -, ,f, ' -f 4' Qia- -V gf 1 4 ,,,,g, H V, M 'WV' 04 ,f-.95 ur v 'mf , 'A 3 if Y.,f,,L ,flfqw ! , ,,,, ff ,' ,YM f , f ,, 'ff' 'Ad ,WJ ,,' .p':, f ' X7 lf? .f , , 'RK , f ' I My Q, A,,, -mtsy f, y'1f,?.M,i'2f ' ,br ' , I 3 f'i11?1Q,,, , 1 A Wgff ,gn f , 5, ,U 43,35 if K , ' , ,f f - 4427 Q7 'A 1 ,L . ay, , . ,f . .M x E' I I V' f . ,f , , fff, , ww 4 +,:,, , f , aflf, ,, ' 7' f I f irakjiv - t V V lwflff f, . 1 5? FOOTBALL Sixty-five candidates turned out for practice in September. Under the cap- able guidance of Coach Franny Parker, the boys fought hard throughout the season. For a while it seemed that all the games would be postponed by either the Hu or the weather. The climax of the season was the Gardiner game which Gardiner won in a very close contest. This marked the last action for Hfteen seniors who played their last football for Cony this year. At the start of the season it looked very gloomy, but as the season progressed, so did the boys. They put together four wins in a row in midseason, in- cluding a top-notch game with arch-rival Gardiner. We had a young team this yea.r with four under- classmen in the starting lineups We look with great anticipation to the season of '58-'59, Individual top scorers were Williams, 158, Tschamlet, 154, Napolitano, 141. TRACK The 1958 trackmen are on the go this year with a heavy schedule. The Red Rams are composed of many underclassmen and are headed by a strong, but small, veteran group. Although being weak in num- bers, the team is well-rounded in all the field and track events and looks forward to a successful season. FIELD HOCKEY The girls field hockey team, better known as the mud packersf' finished the season with an impressive record. The girls had four wins, two ties, and two losses. The season was plagued with postponements because of the Hu,', but even the g'Hu,' couldn't kill enthusiasm, spirit, and team work. Gossip says that bells were ringing the day the Cony-ites beat Kents Hill 4-0. The senior members of the team wish Mrs. VValton and her teams the best of luck. GIRLS' SPORT PROGRAM This year our girls really contributed their share to the sports program. In the afternoons they could be seen bouncing and turning on the trampoline. Fridays they could be found swinging round and round in a merry whirl as part of the square dancing. With all the archery practice this last fall, we really ought to have some excellent archers. Between the time of hay and grass, our girls were hard at work tossing the balls across the volleyball net, whacking the birdie in vigorous badminton matches, or just rolling around on the mats. 92 ARCHERY Front: Chase, Stone, . STUDENT COUNCIL The Student Council for 1957-1958 is composed of sixteen members, four frbm each of the respective classes, and has a capable faculty advisor in Miss McAllister. The plan of continued membership, begun last year, has been tem- porarily put aside until further study can be made. Although the meetings are not on a regular schedule, they are held at least once a week. Attending the State Convention of Student Councils, appointing team mana- gers for each sport, approving athletic awards, and helping to start the Teen- Age Code in the right direction, were among its many accomplishments this year. High School was just three short months away! Like magic the summer was gone, we were in High School!!! THREE insufferably long days later, the glamor, the excitement were gone. We had learned, the hard way, that 32', was not located on the fifth floor in the old building. We learned to clap erasers as they were never clapped before or else face the wrath of the Empress of Room 6. We learned that the man in the upper hall with his hair parted in the middle was not old Fred, the janitor as the upperclassmen had informed us, but rather the physics instructor. As if this hadn't been enough, we were informed by that same ujanitorv that we were invited to.a party just for us. Of course, there was some minor detail pertaining to clothing . . .Bathing beauty, Dick Sawyer, and Scarecrow, Shirley Savage, reigned while the sophomores, in a contest that was obviously fixed, defeated us. We had already learned that school did not end at 1:30 as we had supposed, but rather at 3:30 for many of us. Next we learned that another class was to be held in the evening. Dancing classes!!! Are you mentally retarded? Not me, no sir! However, this turned out to be one of our more enjoyable classes. We leamed to tell our left foot from our right, most of the time. Terry Richardson won the Cue-Rameses Slogan Contest that fall with her original line, Reach for the Cue. The principal, we've grown to know and respect, Mr. Horace Croxford, was a freshman right along with us. He took over the reins from Mr. VVilliam Macomber as top man that year and has been our guide and advisor throughout our four years at Cony. Our freshman football team worked very hard and emerged with a fine rec- ord. This team produced many future varsity stars. Our freshman year marked the first time that Cony did not play her home basketball games in the gym. Instead we began playing at the Armory where there is much more room for spectators and players alike. Billy Miller captained the freshman basketball team just as he did this yearis varsity. We elected Eddie Redman as our class president. Ronnie Vielleux was the vice-president, and Jean Carney was the secretary. The representatives of our class on the Student Council that year were Deane Constantine, Cy Ludwig, Brenda Foster, and joy McAuley. Many of our class took part in the 1955 Chizzle Wizzle. John McCatherin was an endman and Joyce Young had a leading part in the play. The very able chairman of our booth committee that year was Steve Hines. That spring john Brower and Richard Hilton were winners in their respec- tive divisions at the Regional Science Fair. Dick then went on to win the State Contest. 132 Of course, we mustnit forget the initiation of the honorary members into the Latin Club. What a wild party that was! The initiates emerged covered with lipstick, tand I don't mean the pleasant waylj Now summer was over. We were upper-lower classmen. No longer did we occupy the poop deck at assemblies. We could laugh at the new crop of green freshmen who seemed at least twice as small and twice as stupid as we could possibly have been. After adjusting ourselves to the school routine, we elected as our class officers Howard Williams, president, joy McAuley, secretary, and Deane Con- stantine, veep.,, Deane was also president of the Latin Club that year, and john Lasso was elected president of the Art Club. There were eleven members of the fighting varsity football team which lost a heart breaker to Gardiner, 7-6. Faith Hunter and Warren Elvin won the W.C.T.U. essay contest our sopho- more year. Broadway Revue was the theme of the 65th Chizzle Wizzle. johnny Mc- Catherin was again an endman and Ed Redman headed up our booth commit- tee. Many others in our class took an active part in the festivities either in the olios, the singing chorus, or on the booth committee. Steve Hines and Del Parent had leading roles in the play, Time Out for Ginger. That spring Richard Hilton took a first in the State Science Fair competition in the physics division competing against juniors and seniors. john Brower won a prize for his entomology exhibit. Although many members of our class were on j.V. teams our sophomore year, Don Herron was the only one to play either varsity basketball or baseball. Cony went to the Eastern Maine Basketball Tournament that year where we lost in the first game to a fighting Stearns team, 51-48. Noreen Dumais played on the Varsity Field Hockey team two years ago. Steve Hines and jean Carney were chosen as our class typical students that year. This was the first time these awards were made. Having survived the first two years in the salt mines, we were high and mighty juniors! Knowing that this year we were the superiors to over half the school, we were even inclined to swagger a little as we entered the school, CI said 'swaggerf not 'staggerfj We elected Steve Hines as our class president. Howard Williams was the vice-president and jean Carney was our class secretary. Our Student Council representatives were Nancy Cottle, Anne McArthur, Ronnie Veilleux, Bob Rowe, john McCatherin, and Del Parent. Looking around a little, we discovered two of the faculty had Hchickened out after many long years, Mr. Thurlow and Miss Prentiss were no longer here. It hasn't seemed to have done much good, retiring Miss Prentissg she is still a pretty familiar sight in the halls of Cony. We had sixteen members on the varsity football team that year. The team l 3 3 of 1956 is probably best remembered for their exciting win over Winslow, where they scored two touchdowns in less than a minute. That fall we revived an old sport at Cony, cross country. Billy Miller won most of the meets 'in which he participated. There was also a new athletic club formed, the Gymnastic Club. The Chizzle W'izzle of 1957 was just as its theme suggested, Out of this Worldf, Cy Ludwig, Ed Redman, and Brenda Foster were on the executive committee that year. David Stillman and Iohnny McCatherin were endmen while Tom Wilson, Del Parent, and Steve Hines had leading roles in the play. David Sterling was the chairman of our booth committee. Tom Fletcher starred for Cony's baseball team as an outstanding pitcher and Don Herron hit a .500 clip most of the season. Steve Hines and Ed Redman received our school's top award, the Everett V. Perkins Memorial Trophy for the most satisfactory record in every way for three years at Cony. Dick Lessard won the Harvard Book Prize. Del Parent and Steve Hines were chosen as the typical students from our class last year. Twelve boys and four girls attended Dirigo- Boys, and Cirls, State. Both Dick Sawyer and Faith Hunter were elected President of the Senate. Del Parent was one of two girls from Maine to go to Cirls' Nation in Vifashington. Another summer passed all too quickly, and now we found ourselves only thirty-six weeks away from graduation. It didn't seem quite right for us to be the seniors, they had always seemed so much older than we, yet we hadnit changed at all. The change was there, however, it was now our duty to guide and lead the entire student body. We elected Bob Rowe to the oiiice of class president. Del Parent became our secretary and Bob Thurlow the vice-president. Bob Baudo is this yearas president of the HI-Y Club, Del Parent is the presi- dent of the C.B.C., Dick Sawyer is president of the Debate Club and the French Club, Richard Lessard is president of the F.T.A, Steve Hines is editor of the Cue- Rameses and president of the Student Council. Peggy Dostie presides over triple-C meetings, Richard Hilton is president of the Science Club, Lorraine La- Pointe heads up the TRI-HI-Y, Bob Locke is editor of the Coniad, and Faith Hunter is president of the C.P.E. John McCatherin is president of the Spanish Club, Iohn Lasso is president of the Art Club, and Warren Elvin is president of the Clee Club. Bob Rowe and Ed Redman were co-captains of the football team this year. Seniors who lettered were Deane Constantine, Clement Dube, Bruce Green, Steve Hines, Johnny Lasso, Johnny McCatherin, Charlies Naugler, Ed Redman, Bob Rowe, Dave Sterling, Ronnie Veilleux, and Bob Yorks. Ronnie Bechard lettered his junior year. Ed Redman won the Lanny Cooper award for the out- standing lineman. Donna Brennen, Noreen Dumais, Faith Hunter, and Mary Learned lettered for the varsity girls Field Hockey Team. 134 Iohnny Lasso, Howard Williams, and Captain Bill Miller received varsity awards in basketball. Nini Dumais, Faith Hunter, Dianne Storr, and Iudy Purington played on the girls varsity basketball team. , Our senior play, Seventeenth Summer, was heralded as a great success by all who saw it. Steve Hines and Del Parent had the leads, but they were ably assisted by Kenneth Nelson, Sheila Hinds, Cynthia Lewin, johnny McCatherin, Anne McArthur, Edith Cheitman, Bruce Green, Sandra Caswell, Mary Leamed, Richard Lessard, and Cy Ludwig. How can we ever forget our last Chizzle Wizzle at Cony which was truly a Stopover Statesidelv Bob Thurlow was our hard working president. Brenda Foster juggled the figures to show one of the largest profits in the history of Chizzle Wizzle. Barbara Smythe was the secretary and Dick Lessard and Faith Hunter were also on the executive committee. From underneath the black make- up peered the five faces of Messrs. McCatherin, Stillman, Ludwig, Crocker, and Rowe. Steve Hines was the Connecticut Yankee in King Arthur's Courtf' The class of 1958 probably set some sort of record for winning outside schol- astic awards. I hope the whole community will take note of this and give credit where credit is due, to the faculty of Cony High. Edith Cheitman, Bob Locke, Dick Sawyer, and Bruce Greene were finalists and Certificate of Merit winners in the National Merit competition, putting them among the top one half of one percent of the countiyis high school seniors. Iohn Brower, George Morrisette, Richard Hilton, and Edith Cheitman were the only ones in the state to receive recognition for their participation in the Westinghouse Science Talent Research. Steve Hines is Representative Coflin's principal nominee to Annapolis, and Billy Miller is an alternate candidate to West Point. Dick Lessard is the prin- cipal nominee to the Air Force Academy and Bob Carnes is an alternate to An- napolis. Both Steve Hines and Dick Sawyer qualified for the N.R.O.T.C. program. Del Parent was named as our school's good citizen by the D.A.R. and Edith Cheitman is the Betty Crocker Homemaker of Tomorrow winner at Cony. At the time of this writing there are many awards still forthcoming. There may be records set by our athletes, however, the printer is waiting. These things can never be forgotten, anyway. There it is, our class history. Our high school careers are fast drawing to a close. After four years Cin some cases 5 or GQ weire leaving. Many will cry and feel sad, however, graduation should be a happy occasion. As we look back upon the experiences we've had here at Cony, the friends we've made, and the ac- complishments weive achieved, let's feel grateful that we have had them, and not sad because they are gone. For now there is more to dog we have more of life to lead, more of life to learn. Yet as we go out into life, there is one thing we can be sure of, weill always be a part of Cony just as Cony will always be a part of us. 135 GIRLS' CLASS WILL LOUISE DOSTIE IUDITH PURINGTON We, the girls of the class of 1958, being the most adorable, charming, captiv- ating, lovable, and in summary the VERY BEST little ANGELS ever to roam the halls of Cony High, do hereby bequeath with much regret, and many crocodile tears from our big, beautiful crossed eyes, the following articles hoping that the beneficiaries of this Last Will and Testament will appreciate our precious treas- ures and use them all with due respect and reverence. ARTICLE I GENERAL BEQUEATHS To the childish freshmen we leave an ample supply of false eye lashes, mas- cara, tweezers, purple lipstick, powder, bobby pins, home permanents, a variety of hair dyes and bleaches, and blue linger nail polish, in hopes that these articles will help them learn the ropes a little faster. It will take them long enough anyway. To the sophomores we leave our sack dresses, long necklaces, our worn-out ivy league shoes of all shades, sizes, and styles, and our old hot rods and, last but not least, our special techniques of getting out of the messes we get into. To the juniors we leave our secret hideaways, certain handsome junior boys whom we have held in a daze for so long, with the hope that they will know what to do with them. We also leave our forged and re-forged passes which we have used down through the ages to be destroyed. We never got away with it, and you never could either. ARTICLE II INDIVIDUAL BEQUEATHS I We, Doris Bilodeau, Betty Brunelle, and Mary Ann Gorneau, will our ability to roller skate to Mr. Parker. This should enable him to have ample speed in catching WHO DUNITD during iirst lunch period. We, Deanne Bechard, Sally Doyle, and Joan Drummond, will our reputa- tion for hotrodding, which we have worked so hard to attain, to anyone who thinks that he can kill the same number of cats, knock over as many telephone poles, and land in as many ditches as We have. We, Arlene Dumont and Joyce Dumont, will our ability to keep awake in third period English Class to the upcoming seniors who might think that it is easy to do so while Miss Stevens is reading poems of 18th Century England. I, Arlene Blanche, leave my camera to Clark Studio to replace the one broken during the photographing of our class pictures. I, Margaret Peppy Robichaud, leave my ability to dance the liven to Mr. Charles Blondy,' Arbor to add that Rock and Roll atmosphere to his history classes. 136 We, Pat Pye and Lynne Mitchell, will to Paul Rodrigue the privilege to be- come a decided blond-we decided only recently. I, Brenda Foster, leave my oflice in the Girls' Physical Education Club to Larry Coughlin, who, I am sure, would get more enjoyment out of it than I did. I, Harriet Bechard, will absolutely nothing to anyone, for I am taking every- thing I have with me. We, Barbara Sheloske and Nancy Sherwood, leave our upright frankness to Mr. Parker who is always trying to prove that Mr. Arbor was in college while he was still in grammar school. I, Cynthia Lewin, will my wild, crazy antics to MAD COMICS. We, Noreen Dumais, Sandra Caswell, Betty Cummings, and Betty Cunning- ham, the former terrors of Room H, ain't gonna leave nothing. We figger that there ain't nobody in this here school deserving of our precious treasures. I, Nancy Stratton, will my big beautiful eyes to Mr. Pruett who certainly could use an extra pair during sixth period study hall. I, Edith Cheitman, leave my treasured solid geometry and trig books to Stevie Albison, who, I understand, loves to delve into the mystery of Bgures, angles, and curves. I, Alice Clifford, leave my limpid eyes-no, my shapely figure-no, my shin- ing hair-Oh, I'm afraid I haven't the heart to part with any of them. We, Ioanna Tschamler and Mary Douin, leave our art drawings to the male members of the faculty to be hung in their fabulous Art Gallery, the boiler room, to add to the variety of junk Cpardon me, I meant articlesl which have accumu- lated there during the past four years. ARTICLE III SPECIAL FACULTY BEQUEATHS To our beloved principal, Mr. Horace Croxford, we leave nothing, the mere fact that we are leaving will probably send him into hysterics for several months. To the teachers, we leave our sarcastic remarks, hateful looks, our love for forgetting homework, and for losing assignments, although we know that they are not fully capable of taking over these responsibilities. To Miss McAllister, we leave the following modern', poem to replace the old fashioned Shakespearean Sonnets: Twinkle, twinkle liddle Sputnik, You iss Rawshian dirty tricknik, Up above der world so high Making Zig zags in der sky.
