Dertien received his commission as ensign upon completion of the Naval Science course at the Midshipman School, Northwestern University, in March 1941. Previous schooling included study at Muskegon Junior college, Muskegon, Michigan and Tri-State College, Angola, Indiana. During World War II,'while serving as Communications Officer, 1st Lieutenant and Damage Control Officer aboard the USS FARRAGUT QDD348J and Gunnery Officer and Exec- utive Officer aboard the USS HALFORDQDD480y, he participated in the campaigns of Pearl Harbor, Marcus Island, Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Marianas, Surigao Strait, and Palau Islands. After conclusion of hostilities, CDR, Dertien served a tour of duty at the Bureau of Personnelas Assistant Destroyer Detail Officer and attended the General Line School at Newport, R. I. From June 1947 to July 1948, he commanded the USS RODMAN QDMSZD, and from August 1948 to January 1951 served as Navigator and Operations Officer of the USS HELENA qCA75j. This was followedby another tour of duty at the Bureau of Personnel, Officer Distribution Branch, before coming to the CONY. . His decorations and campaign medals include the Bronze Star with V , Commenda- tion Ribbon with V and one star, American Defense with star, American Theater, Asia- tic-Pacific Theater, World War II Victory, Navy Occupation with Europe Clasp, China Ser- vice, Korean Service with two star, United Nations Service Medal, Philippine Liberation with two stars, and National Defense Service Medal. At present, CDR. Dertien is residing in Norfolk with his wife, Patricia, and three children, Paul, James, V and Patricia. It is with great pride that I look back on our European Cruise. The CONY'S fine performance under adverse conditions on Operation Mariner her alert participation in Operation South Pass with, Royal Navy units at Londonderry, and her excellent record with the Sixth Fleet speak for themselves. The ability of her crew to effect 1m portant repairs, as demonstrated at La Spezia and Gibralter, was outstanding and extremely gratify ing to me. Accept my warmest congratulations D. A.
