Dertien received his commission as ensign upon completion of the Naval Science course at the Midshipman School, Northwestern University, in March 1941. Previous schooling included study at Muskegon Junior college, Muskegon, Michigan and Tri-State College, Angola, Indiana. During World War II,'while serving as Communications Officer, 1st Lieutenant and Damage Control Officer aboard the USS FARRAGUT QDD348J and Gunnery Officer and Exec- utive Officer aboard the USS HALFORDQDD480y, he participated in the campaigns of Pearl Harbor, Marcus Island, Coral Sea, Guadalcanal, Northern Solomons, Marianas, Surigao Strait, and Palau Islands. After conclusion of hostilities, CDR, Dertien served a tour of duty at the Bureau of Personnelas Assistant Destroyer Detail Officer and attended the General Line School at Newport, R. I. From June 1947 to July 1948, he commanded the USS RODMAN QDMSZD, and from August 1948 to January 1951 served as Navigator and Operations Officer of the USS HELENA qCA75j. This was followedby another tour of duty at the Bureau of Personnel, Officer Distribution Branch, before coming to the CONY. . His decorations and campaign medals include the Bronze Star with V , Commenda- tion Ribbon with V and one star, American Defense with star, American Theater, Asia- tic-Pacific Theater, World War II Victory, Navy Occupation with Europe Clasp, China Ser- vice, Korean Service with two star, United Nations Service Medal, Philippine Liberation with two stars, and National Defense Service Medal. At present, CDR. Dertien is residing in Norfolk with his wife, Patricia, and three children, Paul, James, V and Patricia. It is with great pride that I look back on our European Cruise. The CONY'S fine performance under adverse conditions on Operation Mariner her alert participation in Operation South Pass with, Royal Navy units at Londonderry, and her excellent record with the Sixth Fleet speak for themselves. The ability of her crew to effect 1m portant repairs, as demonstrated at La Spezia and Gibralter, was outstanding and extremely gratify ing to me. Accept my warmest congratulations D. A. Operating with the Blue forces, she performed escort duty for carrier and surface units, and assisted in repelling Orange forces Submarine and 911' attacks. On 29 Sept. , while a member of a shore bombardment group, CONY crossed the Arctic Circle in the Straits of Denmark off the Western coast of Iceland, making all her officers and men Bluenoses . Plymouth, England was the first port for the CONY in Europe, being our host from the 5th-8th Oct. Not only was there the opportunity to go on tours to London, Torquay and Dartmouth, but one could go to the top of the Hoe where Sir Francis Drake first sighted the Spanish Armada in 1588. An overnight trip up the Irish Sea brought the CONY to Londonderry, N. I. Dur- ing our two week stay there, CONY divided its time between ASW operations with British destroyers attached to the Anti-Submarine School and getting acquainted with the friendly citizens. On Oct. 26, CONY was underway again, this time for the Mediterranean and the Sixth Fleet. We arrived at Suda Bay, Crete on 3 Nov. , in time to partake in a Replen- ishment Exercise. Next day began our operations with the fast Carrier Task Force, including the large carriers USS ROOSEVELT QCVA-421 and USS BENNINGTON QCVA- 2OJ, and cruisers USS MACON QCA-1325, USS DES MOINES QCL-134Q, and USS WOR- CESTER QCL-1445. Training exercises included sleeve and drone firing, highline trans- fers and refueling at sea. E CONY put in at La Spezia, Italy for rest and relaxation during 10th-16th Dec. A large naval base in Northwesternltaly, La Spezia is the jumping off place for tours .to the art treasures at Pisa and Florence. The 16th-21st Nov. was again taken up with Fleet Exercises, with emphasis on carrier operations and air defense. After the last smallboy had been refueled the even- ing of the 21st, CONY pointed its bow toward Toulon, France, the great French naval base. The grateful allies still remember the heroic scuttling of almost the entire French fleet there in World War II. Many men took advantage of Toulon's proximity to Marseille to visit that enchanting city. I OnNov. 28th, CONYwas steaming again with CORTDESDIV 21, proceeding to Tar- anto, Italy for ASW operations with units of the Italian Fleet, Thgse exepeises took P19-CG 30 NOV- through 3 DSC- , with both Americans and Italians learning from the eX- change of ideas. i On Dec. 4th, the CONY stopped off in Naples for a hurried replenishment, before proceeding to Cibraltar for repairs tothe hull. At Gibraltar, tours of the famous Rock' were Swell by ROYEL1 Army Pe1'S011nel, and several men went on a lively tov-1' to SeVille,. Spain. CONY said goodby 120 Gibraltar on the 12th Dec. and sped to a ren- 1n1a. On the 15th, after refueling from the Ser' dezvous with the Sixth Fleet off Sard vice Force, CONYwas detached with two other destroyers and 9, Submarine to eenduct ASW exercises between Sardinia and Sic'1 , A 1 Y ' , It ' d art-in Combined hunter-killer operations. gam ahan Vessels playa a P . ...ah v- J: ,Xiu A M , . 'Golife-Juanxwas 'selected as our Christmas port and liberty was given from the 19th-28-ith Dec. Besides offering a variety of entertainment all its own Golfe Juan jgvats accessible to Cannes, Nice, Monte Carlo and the Maritime Alps. , Tours were also arranged to Paris, Lourdes and Switzerland. One of the Wal-meet events was ai Christmas Party for a group of French orphan children, who looked with delight to their nautical playland. On 28th Dec. , CONY steamed the short distance to Leghorn, Italy and there spent a quiet New Years. Highlight of the stay was a tour to Rome and a papal audience with the Pope. Standing out ina hail storm, CONY departed Leghorn on 4th Jan. for its last week of exercises with the 6th Fleet. The familiar training in air defense, refueling, freight transfers and flight operations predominated. Upon being detached, CONY proceeded to Cartagena, Spain arriving on 9 Jan. Swarms of Spanish senors, senoras, senoritas and ninos visited and viewed withiwon- der the Americano Destructidiero. Advantage was taken of the local cabarets, and tours were made to Murcia and Madrid. CONY sailed for Free Territory of Trieste onthe 19th and after four days of peace- ful steaming arrived in a dense ground haze. Trieste provedacolorfulcity, and the U. S. Army's generous offer of their sports and post exchange facilities was greatly appreciated. The westward voyage began 24th Jan. down through the Adriatic and across the Western Mediterranean. A short fueling stop' at Gibraltar on the 29th, and the wintry Atlantic in a too-slow ten days. Finally the sand flats of the Virginian Coast, and we were home, H-Day, 8th February, 1954. CONY QDD 5081 was built by the Bath Iron Works, Beth, Maine in 1942. Her name honors Joseph S. Cony, Acting Master, USN, aCivil War hero. Acting Master Cony commanded several small boat expeditions along the Carolina Coasts, Captured 311 enemy en- campment and destroyed a blockade runner at Wilmington, North Carolina, and participated in the two attacks on Fort Fisher. . U. S. S. CONY QDD 508i was commissioned 30 Oct, 1942, and after her shakedown cruise reported for duty in the Pacific area on 27 January, 1943. Her first action against the enemy was a shore bombardment of enemy positions at Kolombangara on the night of 5 March. During this action, two Japanese destroyers were engaged and sunk by CONY'S task group. CONY next' took part in the landings at Vella LaVella on 15 August, 1943. During this action she served as flagship for Rear Admiral T. E. Wilkinson, USN, Commander THIRD Amphibious force. During this operation and the destroyer sweeps up the slot dur- ing the following weeks, CONY is credited with downing two enemy planes and sinking an un- determined number of barges. For this action her Commanding Officer, Cdr. H. D. Johns- ton, was awarded the Silver Star. While CONY was acting as afighter-director ship during the seizure of Treasury Is- land, she was attacked by a large group of divebombers. Although she destroyed five planes, the enemy inflicted two' bomb hits in the after part of the ship. The after engine room and af- ter living spaces were flooded with sea water and fuel oil from ruptured tanks. Fire and es- caping steam made damage control difficult. Eight men were killed or died of wounds and twelve wounded. Seaman 210 Bernard Barney was posthoumously awarded the Navy Cr0SS for heroism in fighting fires although badly wounded. After three months of repairs at Mare Island Naval Shipyard, Vallejo, California, - CONY returned to eetien, acting as an escort and fire mission vessel during the Saipan, Tin' ian and Guam invasions. She also screened, the carrier group supporting the Palau and An- 8 -lal' 1a11di11gS, and helped perform pre-D-Day reconnaissance of Leyte's defenses. During the liberation of the Philippines, CONY was a unit of the SEVENTH Fleet islliigiigiilfsrsii at fhedbitle of '?'u1'i-380 Stlyait, 25 Oct. 1944. She also participated in the - gayen u Opefatlons, helplng to beat off the heavy enemy air attacks. DUT' ' F b ' - . . mg e mary CONY led a mmesweepmg eXPed1t1on that cleared 98 mines from Baler Bay. 28 The last days of the War found CONY Supporting the landings at Brunei Bay Borneo and at Mindinao and Asragani Bay in the Philippines. She also provided gunfire support dur- ing minesweeping operations in these areas. Announcement of V-J Day found CONY at Ulithi Caroline Islands, where she had been acting as escort for the main supply force. , From 991' ly September tffthe middle Of N0V9II1b9I', CONY operated off the mouth of the Yangzte River, China. She assisted in minesweeping operations and disarming of the Jap- anese garrison on Raffles Island. Next came minesweeping off Formosa and the pesgadol-es Islands. At long last, on 15 December 1945 CONY was given a well done. and sent home to the USA. By directive dated 1 January 1947, CONY was decommissioned at the Charleston Naval Shipyard and transferred to the Atlantic Reserve Fleet at Charleston, South Carolina. On 17 November 1949, CONY was recommissioned DDE 508 at the Boston Naval Shipyard. Under command of Cdr. J , A. Dodson Jr. , USN, she underwent a 10-week shake- down cruise at Guantanamo Bay, Cuba followed by a 3-month overhaul at Boston Naval Ship- yard. Routine operations occupied CONY'S time until May, 1951 when she was ordered to Korea. While there she operated on both the east and west coasts, providing shore bombard- ment, escorting carrier forces, landing Korean marines behind enemy lines, and assisting in minesweeping operations. CONY returned to the U. S. in December 1951 via Singapore , the Indian Ocean, Suez Canal, Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic, stopping off at several ports enroute for rest and relaxation. During the months of February and March, 1952, CONY was engaged with the Task Group hunting a 'mystery submarine in the Caribbean Sea. In July, 1952 she entered Nor- folk Naval Shipyard for her regular yard overhaul, and was considerably modernized. Ref- resher training in December and January was followed by a period of ASW and plane guard exercises off the Virginia Capes. ' The last few weeks of August and the beginning of Septem- ber were devoted to preparing for Operation Mariner.
