Tuff Tigers Have Tough Season The Conway High Tiger Football Team experienced an ample amount of disappointment and frustration during the 1977 season. The Tigers gave it their all but somehow came up a few points short in many games. Most of these games were decided in the final minute of play. A brief winning streak was produced after tearing Mullins apart 34-0 and toppling arch rival Myr- tle Beach 12-7 Cnow an annual eventj. Overpowering West Florence 50-13 for Homecoming was the only other vic- tory the Tigers acquired. Tiger super-athlete Terry Burroughs had a superb year. He virtually ran over his opponents in pursuit of the goal lineg he did a bang upv job on defense too. Quarterback Dirk Derrick threw well to receivers Jody Davis, Jesse Brown, Kenneth Jordan, and Brian Conwell. Center Kevin Childs played well enough to earn a spot in the Shrine Bowl. After coming back from a knee injury, Kirk Hardwick helped the defense a lot. Donald Jordan could do almost anything on the football field - catch passes, field punts, or intercept the passes of the opposing team. Others who deserve compliments are Joe Earl Williams, Doug Palmer Can exceptional running backj, Melvin Dewitt, Charles Faison, Terry Hamilton, Gerald Man- nor, Carlton Durant, Bill Wiegand, and Malcom Faison. All of these Seniors contributed much and will be greatly missed. Many experienced players will be looked upon for leadership next year. Bill Averhart did a splended job before an injury forced him to finish the sea- son early. Hunter Jenkins and Brian Carroll did a great job running the ball through the opponents' defense. Leon Wilson and Terry Gause came up with a lot of big plays on defense. Stevie Hunt and Joey Harris also did great things for the team. The loss of 21 Seniors and especially Coach Derrick will be hard to over- come next season, but a lot of hard work and that TIGER toughness will produce a winning team. COACHES: Kneeling: Cleveland Fladger. Standing: Terry Hunter. Julius Derrick. and Ben Onley. After crashing onto the field. this fired-up Tiger team defeated Myrtle Beach I2-7.
