Nmcr Mcffono I Tuff Tigers Have Tough Season The Conway High Tiger Football Team experienced an ample amount of disappointment and frustration during the 1977 season. The Tigers gave it their all but somehow came up a few points short in many games. Most of these games were decided in the final minute of play. A brief winning streak was produced after tearing Mullins apart 34-0 and toppling arch rival Myr- tle Beach 12-7 Cnow an annual eventj. Overpowering West Florence 50-13 for Homecoming was the only other vic- tory the Tigers acquired. Tiger super-athlete Terry Burroughs had a superb year. He virtually ran over his opponents in pursuit of the goal lineg he did a bang upv job on defense too. Quarterback Dirk Derrick threw well to receivers Jody Davis, Jesse Brown, Kenneth Jordan, and Brian Conwell. Center Kevin Childs played well enough to earn a spot in the Shrine Bowl. After coming back from a knee injury, Kirk Hardwick helped the defense a lot. Donald Jordan could do almost anything on the football field - catch passes, field punts, or intercept the passes of the opposing team. Others who deserve compliments are Joe Earl Williams, Doug Palmer Can exceptional running backj, Melvin Dewitt, Charles Faison, Terry Hamilton, Gerald Man- nor, Carlton Durant, Bill Wiegand, and Malcom Faison. All of these Seniors contributed much and will be greatly missed. Many experienced players will be looked upon for leadership next year. Bill Averhart did a splended job before an injury forced him to finish the sea- son early. Hunter Jenkins and Brian Carroll did a great job running the ball through the opponents' defense. Leon Wilson and Terry Gause came up with a lot of big plays on defense. Stevie Hunt and Joey Harris also did great things for the team. The loss of 21 Seniors and especially Coach Derrick will be hard to over- come next season, but a lot of hard work and that TIGER toughness will produce a winning team. Hard Worlzing Cheerleaders Show Tiger Spirit The 1977-78 varsity cheerleaders. chosen by judges only. began the year by selecting new winter uniforms. The cheerleaders put in a lot of hard hours during the summer preparing for the football season. They helped out with football camp by feeding the football players. The beginning of football sea- son brought Thursday night banner painting. Mrs. Kicklighter just loved her multi-colored carport. All of the hard work resulted with Saturday morning sore throats. Will any of the girls forget the trip to T. L. Hanna? What about the midnight ride to Georgia? A Thanks. Doris! The Par- ent's Night reception was a success with the help of the J.V. cheerleaders. Homecoming was quite exciting since the queen and two of the court wore green and gold uniforms. Then came basketball season and that unforgetta- ble pep rallyf' The cheerleaders did a lot to promote the spirit of all of the teams that they cheered for during the year. Wait a minute. guys! Cheerleaders Boost Spirit The Conway J.V. cheerleaders have really boosted the spirit of the teams they cheered for this year. One of the main reasons for cheering is to get the fans involved. and we have to admit they have succeeded in doing that! The girls are a group of hard workers that do not mind putting forth the effort. Oh yes! Let us not forget the times coming back from away games on the bus. They were really filled with spirit and enthusi- asm. All in all, the cheerleaders were spirited and kept the spirit going. The squad consisted of nine girls and two mas- cots. The cheerleaders were: Macie Cox, Lisa Rhue. Eva Wood. Terrie .Io Singleton.iStephanie Dewitt, Gwen Courtney. Scarlet Sanders. Mic- helle Dewitt. and Megan Micheal. Although most of the wrestlers knew nothing of the sport before the season began. they learned rapidly. There was tremendous improvement throughout the season. The team's five seniors - Tony Pineyro, Ron Overcash. Steve Sellers. Dennis Wyman. and Kevin Childs - showed a lot of leadership on the mat. Other members of the team who did a supe- rior job were Willie Love. Tracy Holland. Der- rick Watson. Robert Clardy, Earl Cromartie, Ron Ray. Mike Parnell. Darrell Overcash, Bryan Jenerrette. Hunter Jenkins. and Robert Cox. This year's competition was tough because of the experience of the other teams. With nine wres- tlers returning. Coach Van Zile expects a fine season next year. Mirror Staff Meets Deadline it K7 'I ,gt ., fm... ,,..-...i S .fem CO-EDITORS: Sally Proctor and Rex Jackson BPSINESS Nf1AN.-XGERS: Judy Gerrald and Renee Thompson After a long year of frustrations. the Conway High Annual Staff produced this yearbook. It all began before the first day of school. The members of the staff all met to paint. sweep and clean our new annual room. The completion of the room was done at the end of first semester. The very first day of school. the annual staff began work. Layouts were being drawn. pictures were being lined up. and the quad-paks were completed. There are many events that the I977-78 Mirror Staff will always remember, Among them are deadlines being met. A major problem was pictures. It seemed as though they never did come out because. lt rained. or We're out of film. or The dark room was messed up. These are familiar lines to all staff members. All the staff will remember being yelled at by everybody. If it wasn't Miss Carlton. Rex. or Sally. it was someone else. Even though there were many problems. The Mirror Staff always pulled through. When extra work was needed. mem- bers were willing to spend a Saturday afternoon in the dark room or lose some sleep by working till 3 a.m. The hard work. the mistakes. and the arguments all combined to produce a beautiful yearbook of which the Annual Staff is very proud. Special thanks go to Olan Mills for their pictures and Miss Carlton. our advisor. 'J Advisor. Ms. Carlton. makes another important decision. QQE Q Q . 1- f n ff X my E., K V A y Vfx. As Sophomores the Class of '78 gained the undisputable reputation of Bankruptcy for our most talked about Homecoming float. The boys will never forget their haircuts, Block C and Bozo the Clown, and other beautiful styles. The girls will never forget the cov- erdish supper, EX-A-LAX, or the Bless- ingf' As Juniors we were prepared. We won Spirit Week and Homecoming float. We proved that we could do great things as we broke all Magazine Sales Records and produced a Miss CHS pageant that took in the most money of all the pageants in CHS history. We had Mainstream entertaining at the best Jr.-Sr. Prom ever, followed by an exciting Jr.-Sr weekend. As Seniors we remember our accom- plishments as well as our mistakes. We have leamed from them both for they are part of us - a part of the Class of '78. 7521: V ,fwzftwsfizff g,ffc Tf'f' 'ft Dean Johnson - President Cindy Hyman - Vice President Cassandra Chestnut and Terri Friday - Sena- tors nouq ,,,,,...4-nd Donna Johnson - Sec.-Treas. The Goose,' of the Seniors and Sopho mores was really cooked when the Juniors won Spirit Week. Staying up all night to paint the banners really paid off. With a capacity crowd, the Miss CHS Pageant was an overwhelming success. The great audience and the beautiful contestant received a real treat since talent was added to the list of judged categories. The talent portion of the pageant provided a new expe rience for the contestants and also made the people aware of our many talented students. To top the evening, Miss CHS, Sar: Manship and the first runner up Kathy Kicklighter were Juniors. p With our mighty Tiger Streak, the juniors made a good showing at Homecoming. All of the work seemed worthwhile when 4 Junior, Sheri Richardson, was crowned Miss Homecoming. Our cup runneth overv Junior-Senior weekend with a super fantastic prom. The prom was one that will be remembered fol many years to come. All in all, 1978 was a big year for the class of ,79, but wait till next year when we will be Seniors. We had a lot of fun and also accomplished much. . Remember the fun we had Spirit Week? Painting banners all week long . . . that big roll of paper will last forever!! Painting Stamey's Volkswagen like a tiger . . . dressing up fifties style and like tigers . . . and yelling until our voices were gone . . . we really showed spirit!! It was nice not to be little freshmen anymore. and it was even nice not to have to walk to the Annex every day, especially on days that it rained. Remember the many hours and hard work during Homecoming? We almost thought we'd never think of a slogan. All of it paid off when they announced THE SOPHOMORES WON THE FLOAT CONTEST!!,' We were happy!! And this year nothing broke down before the parade. Yes. the Sophomores had a lot of fun, but we could never have accomplished all that we did without everybody's cooperation. This year was a good year butjust wait until we're Juniors . . . Force of '81 Scores Its First Blow The Force of '81 is in high school at last. Hard to believe, isn't it? Bet the Freshman gals remember that big welcoming scene Down the Road where they got their hair done. That salon did fabulous work: those hairdos lasted several days. Short hair certainly was in style for those guys this year. Actually. the Sen- iors were not very talented at styling hair! High School was a new experience for the Freshmen. Though the Freshmen didn't win Spirit Week, they tried hard and are looking forward to the years to come. Building a float was something else! lt took a lot of hard work and was very messy. On the day before the judging, the Fresh- man float was finally completed with the people in the stands cheering on Tiger Rocky,, as he carried out his orders to knock out Knights. Remember all those freezing afternoons spent hammering nails and cutting chicken wire? The hot dogs and HOT chocolate were really good. The effort wasn't considered a total loss since the Freshmen tied with the seniors for third place. The float did turn out quite well and showed talent. The Freshmen were talented in more ways than one. For instance, Sandra Gore placed second runner-up in the Miss Con- way High Pageant. The Freshmen really enjoyed their first year in high school and can't wait for next year. Look out CHS and may the FORCE be with you! ,f 1 f i s 3 President - Maggie Hennigan 'N .
