Z Audubon Society Z SENIOR CLASS HISTORY With our graduation so near at hand, it is hard to believe that we were once bashful first-graders. when we first entered school on that day in September, twelve years ago,we were just a little bit afraid of that big building with so many peo- ple in it. But as time went on, we became adjusted to our new environment, and before long we felt as though we really belonged there. Ior the first six years, our lessons consisted of 'read1n , 'r1t1n , and 'r1thmet1c'. Then, as we approached the seventh grade, we began to look forward to the beginning of our high school years. This was something new, too. Of spe- cial importance in our eighth grade year was the State Test,on which sever- al of our classmates received high ratings. As Freshmen we had to face the ridicule of our upper classmen. We were forced to dress and act like morons during our initiation period. After the Sophomores entertained us at our initiation party, we felt capable of with- standing anything the world had to offer. Miss McDonald, the Home Economics teacher, was our sponsor, and Walter McDaniel, our president. Under the sponsorship of Miss West in our Sophomore year, we enter- tained the Freshmen at an initiation party that was equal to what we had experienced as Freshmen. Walter McDaniel was again our president. The La- tin Club was organized this year, and our Latin students became its first members. At the beginning of our Junior year, we began to think of some ways to earn money. We had a skating party, a bake sale, and sold refreshments at basketball games. We elected Betty Sinn president and Mr. Alexander was our sponsor. The prom theme we chose was 'A Heavenly Ball'. We spent many weeks in preparation for this big event. With the help of our sponsor and the cooperation of our classmates we felt very proud of the result. The Junior-Senior Reception was, in our minds, a success. Then the big year dawned on us. Weighted down with all the 'extras' that accompany the Senior year, we undertook our responsibilities with full anticipation of the festivities of our graduation. Our biggest problem was that of raising money for our class trip. We held a skating party, a bake sale, operated the candy store, sold refreshments at basketball games, edi- ted the annual, and had a carnival. Betty Sinn was again our president, and Mr. Linn, our sponsor. We are planning to go to Washington D. C. for our class trip. Now, with commencement just ahead, we set forth from Con- voy High School, proud of the record that we, the class of l9b9 have made. 10 fx lo rj, 1 f xr. HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1950 In the warm sunny month of September, 1938, the school bells summoned us, as newcomers, to join in the activites within. We were starry-eyed, amazed, and somewhat scared of this new place and of our teacher. But soon we were as much a part of it as we were of our homes. Miss Mildred Temple started us in our field of learning the subjects that are necessary in life, reading, writing arithmetic, literature, music, and drawing. These nine months passed quickly and we were promoted to the second grade. Mrs. Norma Carey met us at the door this time and added to our know- ledge a few more facts. Then habitually, we passed from grade to grade with Mrs. Helen Smith as instructor for our third, Miss Jessie Driver for our roursn, Mrs. Rema Mohr and Mrs. Mary Myers for our fifth, and Miss Driver again as our sixth grade teacher. Then we chlldren were standing on UDB threshold, beholdlng another moment filled with anxiety. We were promoted upstairs. The seventh and eighth grades passed rapidly, and then came high school. . The first month of high school proved to be warm and oheerful--Fresh- man Initiation--. Months went somewhat slower, later, but eventually they passed, as did the Sophomore year. a How as Juniors, we are looking forward to other greet moments in our lives,--Senior activities and graduation--. When it comes, we, together, will meet it. 13 'G fcn Q , f' , QS 1-5 'PO .1515 -4 -. HISTORY OF THE CLASS OF 1951 In 1939 we started our education with a class of L3. Little did we know what was ahead of us in the next eleven years. But now that we look back over the years,we recall different incidents that constituted our hap- py elementary YBBIS. Among these were an operetta entitled 'Aunt Druci- lla's Garden', which we gave in the sixth grade with the help of the fourth and fifth grades. Also in the sixth grade, we had a minstrel show that was part of a program by the entire school. We all found this was fun, because we were dressed to look like 'darkies'. In 1945 we entered the seventh grade with a class of 33. We found it rather confusing, since the seventh and eighth grades are included in the high school. But we finally became accustomed to it, through the help of our upper-classmen. we were now eligible for class parties, so we took ad- vantage of it with two parties, a 'Scavenger Hunt' and a weiner roast at Snyder's grove. Aside from these parties, we visited Van Wert to see the Brumback Library, the County Court House, and the County Jail. In the eighth grade wa accompanied by the seventh grade, had a skating party at the Y.W.C.A. in Van Wert. After taking our 'Eighth Grade State Test' we journeyed to Fort Wayne where we had an excursion of the points of interest of that city. Upon enterihg the Freshmen Class, we still had an enrollment of 33. We assembled for the first time as Freshmen under the advisership of Hr. Smith and elected the following to serve as class officers for the year: Howard Klausmeier, president, Jun - secretaryftreasurer, Darlene Jones and LeRoy Hoaglin, reporters. omoresinitiated us into high school on October the ior Bauer, vice president, Velma Hoverman, The Soph- eighth. We had three other parties during this year. We now have 29 members through a loss of four of our class mates. Our officers for this year are: Doyt Schaadt, president, Robert Knittle, vice- president, Velma Hoverman, secretary-treasurer, and Barbara Gaskill and Hur vin Barkley, reporters. lr. Sswmiller is our adviser. As Sophomores we have had the honor of initiating our under-classmen. And now, as Sophomores, we are looking forward to the next two years, our last years. In both of these years we hope to find as many happy times and to acquire as much knowledge as we have in these first ten years. 15 in 'v' 1., I Y-.'-flu ,Mfg .'.'b'0 A A Ap, -'S 4 ' Q ..4 J '1 'Y . HISTORY OF THE CLASS OI 1952 The class of '52 started to school in l9hO. Our class was composed of L2 pupils. Our teacher was Miss Catherine Dean. The next fall we started the second grade. Mrs. Norma Carey was our teacher. In the third grade Mrs. Helen Smith was our teacher. Many new sub- jects were introduced to us and we anticipated our next years with great eagerness. Mrs. Mary Meyers was won Q10 for competing in a During 'the next two and subjects taught by Mrs. 'L6 and 'L7 we entered Junior In the school year of ginning to feel important, but we found that hard work the fun we were having. The Sophomores gave us an unusually warm greeting into high school. On October 8, l9L8, the shoes, their their faces. doll babies, fun. In the few parties of our own. so-waited-for initiation came. Altogether it was great evening the Sophomores gave us a swell party. Also, we had a Several of the boys in our grade look very promising as far as basket- ball is concerned. We are looking forward to the next three years of high school with anticipation. 17 V A' fa O 18 V 31 E BACK ROW: IIDDLE ROW: FRONT ROW: BACK ROW: HIDDLE ROW: FRONT ROW: BACK RCW: HIDDLE ROW: FRONT ROW: nears emu: l ry Paneeke,l1la Hollenkopt, Shirley Irene, June Hoag11n,Roeanna Purk, Joan Baker, Betty Sowere, Helen Book. Flying through the sky gives us a wonderful sense giafrgggomgg Poor earth! I wonder if the people of earth will ever have As we land on Mars, we are met by little, interesting men. Strangely enough they speak our language. They show us r t t th tak to their palace of diamonds. S ea respec as ey 6 us We are invited to visit their room of inventions. Excitedly we walk down H 10118 00I'1'id0I' C0 r00m A'. A unique invention in this room recalls all the past. We see ourselves as we first entered Convoy school, then, as we progressed through the years to our graduation day. In room 'B' is a machine which reveals the future. Greatly astonished, we walk in and close the door. Rather hesitantly, we walk to the machine and press the button. At first the view is blurred, but suddenly we see the Olympics of 1952. We recognize Eileen Knittle. She is just ready to begin the 120 meter run. They're off! Excitedly we watch the contestants as they approach the goal. Eileen wins by a 20-foot margin, making the fastest time ever recorded. Next we catch a view of Reno. We see a court room scene. Sure enough! It is Jo Anne May acting as Judge. She always did have an understanding of problems of romance. She is the first woman judge Reno has ever had. First we hear instruments warming upg then suddenly the curtains rise. Miss Jeanne Clay appears on the stage amid great applause, and takes her place at the piano. The music that follows is so beautiful we hate to leave, but since we have no control over the machine, the music fades away. Suddenly the Capitol in Washington D. C. appears. We see Dean Grant sitting behind his huge desk in the F. B. I. Building. The newspaper clip- pings hung all over the walls show that he is quite famous as the captor of many criminals. Now we're off for Florida. We see the 'Luxury Hote1', which is known for its famous food, loom before us. Doris Bell, the dietician, is in.the office preparing the menu for the next day. She is quite successful in this profession. On her wall is a famous painting by Eileen Wallace. We find several paintings by this artist in other parts of the hotel. Huge cacti loom before us as we enter the state of Texas. The Bar 'X' Ranch looks deserted as we near it, but soon we find that most of the cow- boys are out rounding up the cattle. Jack Garver, the owner, is rather worried because the water supply is low. Hollywood! Excitement thrills us as we enter. Who of our class could d d 1 this place? We see all of our favorite child gtgisbliowhaggosi 3p.gogsn'2 that Donna Morehead? We call her and talk of old times. Then she invites us to visit her hat shop. She designs hats for all the movie stars. 39 Like a streak of lightning we fly across the nation to New York. As we enter the New York Times office, we see above a big door the words 'Fern Schaadt--Joke Ed1tor'. We would like to visit her, but so many people keep going in and out of her door that we don't bother her. A crowd of people looking into the sky draws our attention as we leave the building. At once we see a plane doing acrobats in the sky. We recog- nize it as Ruth Beatty's plane. Ruth has been a pilot ever since she grad- uated. That must be Pat Baker as cc-pilot. What a team! Now we are taken tc the scene of a football game. Sure enough 1t's the Army-Navy game. There's Mac McDaniel sitting on the bench. My goodness, he's Navy's coach. From somewhere we hear a news broadcast. The voice sounds familiar, but we do not recognize it until we see the news commentator. No wonder. Who ever thought Donna Etzler would go into that profession!!! Still in a daze we leave for Chicago. Along the way we see billboards advertising the Mabel Stevens Theaters. She has them throughoutthe country. In Chicago we are rushed to Velma North's dress store. From the line wait- ing she must have a profitable business. Down the street a short distance, we see Jack Pennelrs electric appli- ance factory. He is in competition with Westinghouse and is quite a rival. We follow'telephone lines into a huge building and find Ramona Landrum acting as Chief Operator for the Bell Telephone Company. As we move across the world we come to Cuba. We notice that the tall- est building in the country is Bob Weaver's radio station CBS. He is noted for his commentaries or the Crisis of the World Today. From the cleanliness and atmosphere ofthe next building we decide that it must be a hospital. Yes, there goes a nurse. Let's follow her. As we go into the operating room, the doctor comes in. Why, 1t's lary Alice Lcuagie. Our memories are aroused as we approach dear old Convoy High. The halls are the same, the rooms, the books, and all. As we walk into the of- fice, whom do we see but Jean Marilyn Hildbold sitting back of the big desk we know so well! After inquiring, we find that she has been superintendent for three years. Next we see a big dairy farm with three huge barns. As our vision en- ters the house, we see Alice Rosendahl getting supper ready for her -------- Before we know itthe vision fades and we are left watching a blank machine. Very disappointed, we walk down the hall, out the door, and on to the landing field. We board our rocket ship and start for the U.S.A. After we land we hurry to catch the plane for home. When the stewardess brings us our lunch, we think she looks familiar. And no wonder! It's Betty Sinn. We relax and think of our experience all the way home. I wonder if anyone will believe us when we tell him of his future? Joyce Snyder 40 N E' 'W' wg? I I - 73,1 w lf'- a , D O blk YN .
