R MM e YOU ND NEVER LGS Ps The Senior Class of 1939 has chosen as its motto the words that appear as the subject of this sketch. just why this motto was chosen is not known to the writer, but it represents the thought of the class and is an evidence that young people of to- day do give consideration to the direction of their aims. The choice of these words may have been inspired by James Russell Lowell who thought, Not failure but low aim is crime , or by Ralph Waldo Emerson who said, Hitch your wagon to a star , or by Robert Browning who believed, A man's reach should exceed his grasp, or what's a heaven for? Whatever the source, there is the suggestion that it is most important to have a purpose in lifeg to look up and not down, to climb and not creep, to purpose to do and to be something worthwhile. May each member of the Class of 193 9 be true to this motto and be guided in life by the truth expressed by Harold Bell Wright: In the hills of life there are two trails. One lies along the higher sunlit fields where those who journey see afar, and the light lingers when the sun is down, and one leads to the lower ground where those who travel, as they go, look always over their shadows with eyes of dread, and gloomy shadows gather long before the day is done. C. G. LEITER, Superintendent Page Three
