Class H zstory lt was a blue Monday for mama bat what a day for us For at least a year we had been antumpatmg that fxrst day of school We came fr om all sectmons of Converse There was Vlrgxma Bly Janet Cochran Jack Garber Elmer Johnson Jun1or Slaughter Mary Stambaugh Phyllls Thompson and the cute l1ttle boy w1th dark haxr Tom Smlth Phyllls Thompson knew her ABC s It was Janet Cochran and Jun1or Slaughter however who kept the room 1n a Constant txtter Does anyone remember the t1me Phyllls had to stand 1n the hall because she pulled a certa1n l1ttle gxrl s pxgtaxls That would be the day we had a v1s1tor Harold Berglan I suppose we were as thr1lled over our flrst report cards as any chlld 15 We thought our teacher was just out of thxs world We even managed to be promoted to the second grade Mrs Carvey was stlll our teacher for ln those days the faculty was somewhat l1m1ted and each grade teacher taught two grades About Chrmstmas of our th1rd year Phyll1s moved to Pomt Isabel Blonde blue eyed Gladys Brookshmre moved to Converse from Mar1on and entered our class that fall A year after she left Phyllls came back We remamed the same group through the fxfth grade Durmg the wmter that we were 1n the slxth grade Mar1lyn Brewer came from Logansport and a week later Jean McCollom came from Gary Indmana For Mar1lyn and Jun1or xt was love at f1rst s1ght That romance lasted for three years Remember the t1me Mar1lyn dropped her hankle to see Kmghthood Was St1ll In Flower? Mark Knox was her farthful 'P swam Do you remember those eraser games when all of the g1rls Chose JUHIOTQ Mar1lyn and Janet were our yell leaders ln walked could It be tW1hS9 Yes It was tw1ns Wanda Lou and Waneta Mendell arr1ved from Morgantown We 1n1t1ated them 1nto our class by choos1ng them as our yell leaders Do you re member those Jun1or Hrgh ball games? In 1945 Converse became a Consol1dated School That year Wayne Sherxck Bobb1e F1sher and Bob Murray entered our class from Amboy At the begmmng of our Freshman year Donna Pr1tchett Earlene Renbarger and Phylhs Wh1tlock became members of our class Arlene Kelsey came from North Grove Claude Dav1son moved to Converse from Sharpsv1lle Arlene became one of the yell leaders for the h1gh school team As a class we remamed the same durmg our Sophomore year Arlene Janet and Mar1lyn were elected yell leaders Dur1ng our Jun1or year J1m Barton became one of us Phylhs Thompson was elected the Bordermen Relay Queen Mary Stambaugh was one of her attendants Arlene Janet and Mar1lyn were elected yell leaders agam We presented the comedy h1t Peck s Bad Boy It was only natural that the leadxng roles be played by Bobb1e F1sher and J1mm1e Barton Wanda Lou Mendell was elected Presldent of the class Wayne Sherxck V1ce Pr esxdent Jean McCollom Secretary and Bobb1e F1sher Treasurer Our Semor year Bobb1e F1sher was elected Pres1dent Jun1or Slaughter V1ce Presldent Jean McCollom Secretary and Jmm Barton Treasurer We presented the play Dear Papa Our d1rector was Mr Glenn Smxth We ed1ted the school paper The Porcuplne and the annual The Borderhte It was durlng the Semor year that Janet Cochran became Mrs Dale Artherhaults There have been other members ln our class but they have dropped out from t1me to t1me for warxous reasons 16 I Y 1 0 - . Senzor Prophecy In the year 2000 the Honorable Bobb1e Dee Fmsher Pres1dent of the Class of 1950 Converse 1-hgh School Converse Ind1ana former Governor of Ind1ana former Senator of Ind1ana and V1ce Presrdent of the Umted States rs about to board h1s pr1vate rocket plane Puddles outsmde h1s suburban home 1n Wash1ngton D C It 15 the beg1nn1ng of h1s pres1dent1al campamgn As he boards h1s rocket he 1S made comfortable by h1s rocket hostess Arlene Kelsey She 1S rather old to be a hostess but due to d1ff1 ultles mvolvmg men she de 1ded the best way to forget these was to b up 1n the a1r The f1rst state B D F1sher v1s1ted m Wh1Ch he knew anyone personally was New York He had qu1te a long talk w1th a former classmate Mr Claude Dav1son attorney at law He told how ha py he and h1s w1fe Pat have been They have four h1ldren of the1r own and mne grandch1ldren The next place h1s rocket landed was 1n Oh1o Smce the ed1tor of the Cmcmnatx T1mes was Gene Roberts a former lassmate he pa1d h1m a V1S1t Gene was very happy 1n h1s work and sa1d he marr1ed one of the g1rls he had known 1n Ham1lton Oh1o The future Pres1dent couldn t fly over M1ch1gan w1thout stoppmg H15 rocket Just happened to run out of gas m Lans1ng so he decrded to stay there overn1ght As he was go1ng to a hotel he notlced a s1gn Hyman and I-'yman Th1s reg1stered 1n h1s m1nd as someth1ng he had heard before so he opened the door to the off1ce He saw and old lassmate Waneta Mendell She and Larry her husband are 1n partner sh1p She 15 an 1nter1or decorator and the 1nter1or of her home was full w1th sxx chlldren runmng m and out He made mt a po1nt to stop 1n h1s favor1te state Ind1ana The f1rst person he wanted to see was h1s old sweetheart V1rg1n1a Bly He was trred woomg the pretty women 1r the East so to settle th1s he marrred V1rg1n1a They had a fash1onable June wedd1ng V1rg1n1a looked beautzful m a wh1te satm wedd1ng dress w1th an exght foot ve1l After the reCept1on the happy couple left on thelr tr1p to Par1S France They were very much surpr1sed when they saw 1n Parxs an old and Close fr1end from Converse Jrm Barton In h1s art1st s clothes he appeared rather old for h1s age He took them to the art buxldmgs of Par1s to see h1s many pa1nt1ngs The most famous was entrtled Dear Papa After spendmg a month 1n Par1s they boarded Puddles to come back to Ind1ana As they were on the1r way they heard a noxse down on the ground and saw Elmer Johnson dr1v1ng 1n the motorcycle races They had a talk w1th h1m and were very glad they d1d because he told them he had made h1s m1ll1on at racmg and was gomg to ret1re and l1ve a l1fe of luxury They boarded Puddles agam and were 1n the a1r ten mmutes when they landed 1n Callforma Robert Murr ay heard they were 1and1ng here so he met them He told them that after graduat1on he had come to Cahforma and 11ked It so well he set up an orchard and had hved here s1nce He was st1ll as good lookmg as he ever had been Wh1Ch made V1rg1n1a w1sh that she had looked around a 11tt1e more before she marr1ed They bade Bob good bye and flew over a neat look1ng farm w1th a brmght red barn The name on lt was Bowland Farms They landed and were rn North Dakota Phyllxs Thompson Bowland met them w1th a basket of eggs and three ch1ldren She d1dn t look the same as she was only 5 3 tall V1rg1ma and Bob stayed that mght at Bowland s and were off the next mornmg to Texas As they flew along they not1Ced a man w1th a gun and a woman d1gg1ng up a garden They could guess th1s was none other than Mr and Mrs .Tumor Slaughter .Tumor looked very young and why not?
