The large proportion of the people were unmarried or newly-wed, so the school question was not serious. Then with the extension of the railroad the next year, many moved to Casper, the new terminus. The original building of the town was built in 1886, and was a two-room, two-story building, located where the North Side Grade School is now. This two-room building accommodated the schools until 1896, when an increase in children necessitated arrangements for a third teacher for part of the year. XfYl1en l took charge in the fall of 1897, this was made permanent and the third teacher was hired for the full year. The faculty for that year was T. C. Rowley. principal: Alma Sherman, intermediate, and Hattie Brockway, now Mrs. Jay Y. Lucas, of Pasadena, California, primary teacher. Miss l-lrockway was furnished a school room in a frame building where Dr. l'. l.. Campbell's office is now and which had been used as a photograph gallery for some time. VVe had altogether about 90 pupils enrolled. There were only two schools in the State at that time giving a high school course, Cheyenne and Sheridan. lt was commonly understood that the Uni- versity Preparatory school was the Laramie High school. ln 1898, Louise Olivereau and Stella Smith came back and wanted to do some work beyond the grade school work and remained in school through the year. ln 1899, Vllilliam larchow moved to Douglas with two daughters, and james VVillox came back from California with his family, including a daughter who had finished the grades. So Stella Smith, Mamie and .losie larchow and Bess VVillox started in on High School work, A three-year course was planned with very little choice of subjects as the faculty was limited to one. These four stayed together and formed the first graduating class in 1902. l resigned in September, 1901. to take a position in the bank, and Mr. Balfour hlohnston, a graduate of the University of Chicago, was elected to take my place. The survivors of the first class are Mrs. A. A. Clough, nee Mamie larchow. and Mrs, Otto liolln of Casper, nee Miss lless Wlillox. ln 1901 the school census showed the need of more room, so a two-room addition was built on the south side of the old building. A few years later, a four-room addition was built on the west side, completing the North Side building as it is now. Further room being neededa year later, the frame building now occupied by'the janitor, was built and used as a class room, being affectionately called the chickencoop by the pupils using it. The brick addi- ition to the chickencoop was built for a class room with the idea that it could be used as a manual training shop in time. This North Side building with the poultry annex housed the schools of Douglas from the kindergarten to the senior high school class until the building of the present high school building. Nothing remains of the original building as it was torn down and the rooms on the northeast corner of the North Side school occupy the space. Lack of space prevents the recounting of interesting details, but many of the alumni can supply the links in the chain showing the growth of a school of 90 in a town of 500 people to the present school with three good buildings, complete high school courses, and a large enrollment in a town of 3,000 people. 'Tis old and you ought to know It's a story of life in an old high school- 'l'he one we all loved so. Once its halls resounded with pleasure, And the thought of each New Year, Came down with work and also leisure, Its companions were always near. Alas! That was long, long, years ago, The schoolhouse has now been fixed: So it does not look like the one I knew. In nineteen hundred twenty-seven. It happened, one day, I wandered there, just to pass my time away: I wanted my childhood memories to share, And to come back to me that day. I opened the door and stepped inside, Ah! I did not know- That years had gone since I did abide, And that they changed it so. I climbed the old, old stairs alone, So solitary and blue, Then my lips escaped a moan- I saw no one I knew! Strange faces and smiling eyes looked up No one said, I-low do you do! I turned away, simply out of luck- VVith me, that school was through. Ilack to the world I went again XVith just plain memories of old, I suddenly realized it was a dream then In those days Know unforetoldd And now as these words I tell you, It seems that I want to say, I wish I was back to that old school, Back to that high school, today. Xfxsfffif To Ea! I'oor old -Iallitol' lid, The one who never gets to bed, Because of parties and all Staying up to get decorations ot? the wall. Many members have lingered behind: some have sought their fortunes through means other than education. In the year 1923, on the day of September 7th, we who are now the Senior class, came into this high school as Freshmen, snubbed and unnoticed by the upper classmen. VVe tried in vain to take part in all activities but always we were pushed aside by the three other classes. However our party given for the Sophomores was a great success. It was given in the gymnasium of the old North grade school building. The Sopho- mores thought it a fine party and a good time was had by all who attended. The next year we were Sophomores. l-le had a cordial welcome from the upper classmen, much different from that which we recived the year before. VVe found the high school spirit and did everything to develop it. Some of us made the football, basketball and track teams. VVe won the recognition of the upper classmen the first month and we kept it all the year by supporting every activity that came up in school. Our Junior year could justly be called our biggest and best year, for that year we won a name for ourselves as good athletes, actors and as royal enter- tainers. Our Junior play, Am I Intruding? which was directed by XVallace Allen, was a huge success. It was the first class play given in the new audi- torium and was well worthy of the honor. lt was given on the evening of january 19, 1926. Next came the Junior Prom, on the night of February 12, 1926. It was given in the new auditorium also. The room was exquisitely decorated in red, white and blue, in honor of Abraham Lincoln. Large shields hung from the ceiling and from these many streamers were hung. fencing in the dancing space. The lights, which were covered with red shades flooded through these streamers, giving a wonderful effect to the room. The largest link in our social chain was the junior-Senior Banquet which was given on the evening of May 27. lt was held in the Domestic Science Department's dining room. The room was decorated in green and white in the most original way and according to the best designers of our class. An excellent dinner was served after which we had some very good speeches. Later we danced to the music furnished by Curry Brothers' Orchestra. Then in our Senior year we came back to school determined to take our place as leaders of the high school, realizing that the other classes looked up to us to lead the way to victory or to defeat. XN'e surely led the way to victory for our football team. as well as basketball and track teams. were winning teams, probably the best that have yet represented the C. C. H. S. The Seniors made up the largest part of these teams. The Seniors also took upon themselves the duty of putting out the Annual. lt is the first Annual that has been put out by this school for about eight vears. NVe also gave a carnival. the first affair of this sort that has been 'given for a number of years. It was a real success. The Senior class has some very studious members. some that promise to become famous doctors, lawyers and engineers or to be masters in whatever line they may take up. This they have proved by the manner in which they have met the problems of high school for the last four years. I -BGB FORREST. They have sifted and drifted to the far corners of the earth. But the eyes of the world can still see them all and they confided to me and took me to see them all and it was some journey. VVhyl when we Hrst started there was Fred Pexton in VVashington, U. C., the Secretary of the Treasury to the President, John Bansept. We then went to New York City only to find Harry Cannon the City Engineer, con- structing moving streets, subways and fiying platforms. Then we continued through the city, I wondering where the eyes of the world would take me next but whoa! here is Kenneth Creswell, the world's greatest musical comedy producer and his new playhouse built to accommodate 100,000 people with five wonderful pipe-organs, he himself playing at times. NVe stop here for a moment to watch his latest production and-well, well no one else but Claire Albaugh is the star and is world famous for his funny stunts. Little did I realize that the sights in store for me would make me laugh, cry or think. VVhat a good old world it is after all, not many of us have to face tragedies. Now however we are in New Orleans and at hrst I could not understand why we were headed for the docks but there is a big fine ocean liner about to leave and we shall be on it. I almost collapsed when I saw Florence Brady, captain of this ship. Oh! how times have changed. XVomen almost rule the men. Well here we are in Spain and we are nearing a little farm, no not a farm, it is a school building, and there is Velma Fisher clear over here teaching schoolg married too, and teaching three of her own. More school for here we are at the University at Vienna but why we should come away over here I don't know, but here we visit the boy wonder, a son of Margaret Bolln. His mother he says is in America, a rich woman, married to Count Hotchscotchski and that is why her son is in Vienna. How fast we travel, for now I am able to see Pekin, China, coming into view. We stop now at the house of a missionary and the nameplate reads, Paul Clark. Everyone thought that some good-looking woman would capture Paul, but here he is a bachelor. Twenty-one years ago who would have imagined that VVoolworth's chain of dime stores would have reached China. But here we are at the entrance of one and Henry Reese is behind the counter, a clerk in a ten-cent store, he wants us to see his wife and! well now I can tell you he is married to Burla Smull and they have two small boys. Here we are hack in America, clear around the world! We are going into a church and there in the pulpit is Clarence Slonaker wearing a white robe and pouring forth a sermon that would reform anyone. VVe hop up to Alaska and look who's on the district court bench, Bob Forrest, chief judge of the district and tries all cases that come np in Alaska and the North Pole. Now at San Francisco we find Bob Garfield, Chief of Staff of the Army. His un- ceasing work and effort alone, raised him to that high office. We go to Italy, Mussolini is long dead, and Doc Hylton is very popular. It looks as if he will become dictator of Italy. Helping Doc to receive his high position is Arlene Jones, the next great Prima Donna of the world. But now we see America again and we are in Canada. Picture a small town in Canada with hills rising all around. Imagine you see a small garage in the center of the town. Here is John Brockway, a mechanic, married and happy. NVhat do you think? XfVell, John has a john, jr., also learning to be a mechanic. Fords are John, Sr.'s specialty. The eyes of the world now turn me south a little and I am now in Minneapolis and we go to see the University and there teaching in the University is Leila Snodgrass. Then we go across the river only to see the beautiful mansion of Ferol Manning. Ferol has married a very rich pencil sharpener king and her sister Lenore lives with her. All day they play golf and tennis on their own private courses. Now we are in St. Louis, Mo., wandering all over the city and there is a mob of kids jumping and dancing to the tune of a music box. The music grinder is no one else but Dean Esmay. V It seems that quite a few have coagnlated here because here is Ruth Miller, a seams- tress owning herself a large store. Now we journey west to a small town in Colorado, where we find Frances Hartmann and Arbula Brow, two rash, radical political leaders preparing to stir the nation. In another small town not far off is Violet Renshaw, a physician, and a good one, too. She controls her own hospital and has a thriving business. Her specialty is taking out adenoids. -ROY HYLTON. , f N n - X: K Q Mx, fp 1.86. ,Q Qmwnvmawsgg 4, W -74' N EF '7 'ki gf ff QV iff? egfgxb gfg' M5 ik? Some of them came, as Frosh from the countryg others from neighboring towns and still others from neighboring states. Altogether the first year there were 77 members of the peppiest class in Douglas High. Eh! what w'uzat, Seniors? After the upper-class men had gotten used to the green! Green looks, green walkes, green blushes and green talks we had by that time become accus- tomed to them and their infinite scorn and did not feel that our life and future happiness depended upon the attitude of the Sophs, or any other thing except ourselves. A class meeting was held and we found to our delight that Miss Thorson and Mrs. Gibson were our class sponsors. Robert f Spot,'j Fenwick was elected president fdarned good prexyj! Catherine Clark, vice president, and Veronica Froggatt, secretary and treasurer. This year was uneventful as most of the Freshmen years are except for a few initiation nights on which, by the way, the Sophs nearly always got the worst of it. fA-hm !j The peppiest class in D. H. S. began their second year with the election of Spot again as president, and Francis Roush, vice president, and Harvey Allen secretary and treasurer. Of course, we gave the Frosh a party and showed what we can do by mak- ing the most original and successful of parties. The Freshmen returned the compliment-good party-thanks a lot, Sophs. fY' see, they're Sophs now: queer, isn't it?J VVe also proved that we'd be good .luniors by winning a ticket selling con- test fthereby enriching ourselves ten dollarsj and a magazine subscription contest-by this we won a trip to the moon -almost. The third year was the fulfillment of the promise shown the two previous years, namely, that we'd make good Juniors. In case of doubt l'll prove this statement by means of enumeration of some of our activities: 1. A school paper. The staff was made up of Juniors, mostly, and say what you please, it was successful. This was largely due to Miss Grantham fthe sponsorl, but we'll take a little of the credit. 2. A very successful play under the direction of Curtis Ellis fa ,most able director, I might addj and of course A Prom which more than merited its name of THE Function of the Year. The plans for it were carried out with the help, sympathy. and all that, of our NFVV president, Francis Qliritzij Roush, who is the junior football and basketball star and he'll be captain of the foot- ball team next year, even so! we wish to say here that Miss Thorson and Mr. Rep. fa new sponsor and a new coachj deserve much credit for worrying with us and putting it over. I'll not mention our going in the hole because we're out now and by our own efforts Cmember the candy sales, kids?j 3. Helen Hylton's winning of first in the State Reading Contest. Maybe you think we weren't proud of her ?-'n' she's the first person to win first in anything from Douglas. VVe've won second two years in vocal. 4. As a whole we wish we could be Juniors f'ever 'n' ever! NVe've had such a wonderful time. Mr. Markely made some an- nouncements and told us there would bc no school the rest of the day. The football banquet was well attended by the Freshmen, and we are proud to say we have good material for the coming years in athletics. The Sophomorcs surprised us with a very excellent party. The junior Prom which was one of the most talked of school affairs was quite a novelty to the Freshmen. This was XYheatland's first year of football for several years, but they showed up very well and in another year will need to be watched by all opponents. LUSK O-41 Douglas showed her stuff in this game against Lusk. Lusk was known to be a hard and low hitting team and had several games to their record. The score is not a criterion of the strength of the two teams because Douglas made ten first downs to Lusk's six, which would indicate that the teams are quite evenly matched. Douglas' knowledge of the game. coupled with some nice interference, spelled the difference in score. TORRINGTON O-71 y Torrington. the past years has. had one- of the strongest teams in the state and Douglas anticipated such a tveamg this year. However. the Goshen team was not up to the Douglas team that day. lt seems that this was the first time during the year that the team played as a complete unit. and a large score was the result. MOST SUCCIQSSFUL FOOTBALL SIQASON The Douglas High School football season just closed was one of the most successful in the school's history. XYithout a question the coach, Mr. Replogle. has established himself in the minds and the hearts of the football boys, as well as gained the wholesome respect of the people whom his team has played. Seven letter men of last year's team and several substitutes made nucleus for the formidable eleven in the field. winning six games and losing two. NTIVERSER r CBasketball Season HE Douglas Bearcats won their first game of the season, when they de- feated Riverton by a score of 20 to 16, with Douglas leading throughout the game. The Riverton boys were by no means slow and the locals had to play a fast game to beat them. The next game was at Glenrock, where we were defeated by a score of 14 to 26. The Glenrock boys played a fast, smooth game and although the Bear- cats put up a stiff fight they were unable to carry oFf the long end of the score. VVe then met our old rival, Casper, and played them to a 20 to 21 score. The Casper boys seemed to be a good match for our Bearcats and a mighty fast game ensued. The teams took turns making baskets and when the final whistle blew Casper was one point ahead. Sunrise, last year's tournament winners, was the next team on our schedule. They had a good team again this year, but were unable to keep up with the Bearcats. The score was 21 to 17. Douglas evened their score with Glenrock when they defeated them here by a score of 41 to 18. The Bearcats held the opposing team scorless during the first quarter and outplayed them all during the game. On january 27 and 28 the Bearcats went on a trip to Riverton and Lander. The boys who rode in the Studebaker received quite a scare when they turned over going around a curve but regained their balance that evening when they defeated Lander, 13 to 10. Friday, on the way home, the Bearcats stopped long enough in Riverton to score another victory, 32 to 20. In this game, Douglas played some of the best basketball of the whole season. Lander then came down with a determination to win from the Bearcats but the boys played such a steady game, that it would have been a hard job for any team to win from them. The Final score was 32 to 14, in favor of Douglas. This day the Casper and Douglas warriors clashed again. Both teams were determined to win, but the steady team work of the Bearcats gave them the long end of the score which was 20 to 17. The Douglas Bearcats won easily from Guernsey in this game. All the subs were given a chance in the third quarter and the game ended 21 to 14 in the favor of Douglas. On March fourth. the Bearcats journeyed down to Cheyenne to play a return game. They were defeated 15 to 25. ln the former game with Chey- enne on January 29, the Bearcats carried off the long end of a 26 to 25 score. ln the last few minutes the game was brought to a tie. Then Roush was given one shot on holding which he made good and spelled the one point difference in score. The last game of the season was with Lusk in which our Bearcats defeated them by a score of 30 to 7. The Indians, using their close to the fioor plays piled up a nice score alld the gallle ended 2-1 to 3 in favor of the Indians. The next galne, Douglas vs. Buffalo, brought the crowd to their feet on the first play 2.1111 kept them there during the entire galne. The teams seellled to be evenly matched and it was a case of fight, hght, fight, from start to flnish. A couple of shots in the last few minutes put Douglas ahead and the game ended 13 to 12 with Douglas still on top. Glenrock and Hillsdale then played and although the score was somewhat 0110-Sided, the gallle was by no means dull. Glenrock got the lead from the first and kept it during the elltire game which ellded, Glenrock 30, Hillsdale 15. The crowd was given another galne well worth their nloney when Midwest and Lusk WCl1t the rounds. Although Midwest was much larger alld heavier than the Lusk team, it seems they couldn't keep track of the fast Lusk forwards alld so the unexpected happened. Lusk 7, Midwest 6. The last game of the afternoon was between Casper alld Lost Springs. The practice ellded with a score of 53 to 2 Ill favor of Casper. VVell, this was allother one of those last minutes games when some Hashes of brilliant tealn work again saved the day for Douglas High, The score was, Douglas 15, Glenrock, 14. Saturday afternoon the nerves of the Douglas rooters were again wrecked. A 19 to 18 win over Wheatland was the cause, wreck, alld result, altogether. Long accurate shots in the last few minutes of play again spelled the one poillt difference in score. The two final games of the tournamellt were played Saturday evening. The gyln was packed to its fullest capacity alld CVC11 the 017811 spaces under the baskets were filled. The flrst gallle was played between Buffalo alld Glenrock for third place, both ICHIIIS having lost one ganle. They were both determined to win and a hard, fast game was the result. The hnal score was 22 to 15 in favor of Buffalo. And now COIIICS the big game, Douglas vs. Casper for flrst place. Casper took the lead 111 the first few nlillutes by bagging three short goals. Douglas then begall to Sllap out of it but with two of our 111611 pretty badly injured it was nearly impossible for the team to play up to its usual good f0I'11l. The rest 'of the galne was an exchange of basket for basket, Casper holding the lead gained in the first few minutes. C .-X., 27. JUNIOR PLAY The junior play, NYater XYon't Run Cp llill, was given in the lligh School Audi- torium, lleeember 21, 19311. The story is concerned with the adventures and misadventures of a young man who is very' much in love, but who is too poor to get married. Ile must have money, but how is he to get it? Ile goes to a brother Elk, explains the situation, and together they devise a scheme for raising the necessary funds. lt is a perfectly honest, strictly legitimate business proposition, but it has no precedent. Never in the history of the world has anything like it been tried. NYith fear and trembling they put the plan into operation and the two Iilks find themselves involved in the business affairs of a syndicate of wealthy business men and entangled in the law affairs of half a dozen women. Their effort to bluff the former and side-step the latter brings about some side-splitting situations. lfollowing is the cast: XN'alt VVoodward Francis Roush judge lfvans - - XVm.
