TONGE YV.-XLL.-XCE VVY.'X'I I', NI. 'l'L'RNl-IR XVY.-X'I l', D. ZININI IERNIAN DOROTHY -IENNINGS Class Hisiorian The strains of our Alma Mater die away on the May morning as we, the Class of 1951, sing it together as a class for the last time. Yes, the audible strains of the song die away, but.the music that it leaves in our hearts will echo forever! For we have been busy during our four years within these ivy-covered walls. We have been busy making memories, memories that began back in the fall of 1947 .... VVe were excited during that first week of school, it was an excitement that contained mixed emotions. We were afraid, for we had heard much about college and knew very little, we were blue, because for many of us, this was our Hrst real venture from home, but we were happy and gay because we realized that this was the beginning of a new world . . . a world in which we wodld make lasting friendships . . . a world in which we would shoulder our own responsibilities . . . a world in which we would share priceless experiences, There were the entrance tests during that first confusing week of orientation, the never-ceasing parties, the important meetings, and along with these, we were busy unpacking our new clothes, fixing our rooms, and becoming acquainted with our new classmates, teachers, and this place we were to call home for the next four years. After we stopped asking stupid questions, we settled down to our weekly themes, Biology labs, and Freshman gym. We began to take part in the hockey games and the swim meets. We joined the Glee Club or played in the Orchestra. And we did all of these things with an eagerness and enthusiasm that was to last for four years. Rat week may have fostered unity within our class and between the two classes, but it also brought its fears of the mighty Sophomoresn and their constant demands which we carried out with Freshman fervorv. VVe recall the kindness of our Big Sisters and the impressive- ness of the candlelight at the Junior-Freshman Ceremonies. Senior Class After Thanksgiving, came elections of class oflicers, repre- sentatives to the council and cabinets, our class song was written, we fought for the blue and whiteng we printed our publication, We, The Ffeffmzim, and gradually We began to feel that we were becoming a part of Converse. WVith awe and envy we noted the Seniors as they marched to Chapel in their stately black robes. Their position repre- sented a goal for which we were working . . . a goal that seemed far away. Our Sophomore year came with many mysterious meetings in the Math Room and other obscure places. Always we sang our spirited song, Oh, Rise Up Ye Class of 'S17'. And then one moonlit night we marched across the back campus to Cudd and Dexter repeating the haunting refrain, and Rat Week began. lf the frightened Freshman had known that we were as nervous and as excited as they, perhaps they would not have carried out our orders so religiouslyl On Senior-Sophomore Day we proudly wore the robes and our ridiculous hats, we won the basketball tournament that year, we saw the glow of a bonhre on the hockey field, we saw the gleam of candlelight at a Y-Service. When Christmas came we played hostess at the Christmas party, decorated the tree and Main Hall, and as we looked about us at our friends laughing and singing carols together, a warm feeling stole over us . . . a secure feeling, for we knew that now we were indeed an integral part of Converse. In May we watched our Big Sisters graduate, and we felt a step nearer our goal. We returned to Converse the following September with light hearts, less dignity, and more responsibilities. We had later dates, more nights and week-ends, and now we could fill in the blanks at the top of our registration sheet where it said Major,' and Related Fieldn. We became sisters not only to the Freshman class, but also to the rest of our Converse friends. We knew and loved our faculty better. The Little Shop was our responsibility that year with late snacks and pennies stuck in the coke machine! Canasta became the rage, History and coffee at eleven in the Day Study warmed our conversation as well as our spirits. There were late practices in the gym that year for our Junior Dance, and there was the rustle of our black and white dresses in the dining room as we proudly marched in the F igure. That day in Chapel when we heard the tap of the Gavel and saw those from our class sworn into the Order, there was joy in our hearts and there were tears in our eyes. When elections came that spring and we realized that the people to be chosen would fill Senior ofiices, we felt that We were preparing to take the final step toward our goal. How we labored over the Junior-Senior Banquet . . . our fears and hopes that the Seniors would like it . . . our relief and happy smiles that their laughter brought! We beamed with pride at Class Day that year when we received the A. A. Plaque and the Scholarship Award. At the Senior Luncheon when we donned our caps and gowns, we sadly bade the old Seniors farewell, but there was an expectant gleam in the eyes of each newl' Senior, for she had high hopes for the coming year. Then, it finally came . . . Senior year with all of its privileges, which brought for many, practice-teaching, case work and Senior recitals. VVe eagerly awaited the formal open- ing when we could march down the aisle in the classic Greek dignity of a Senior in her cap and gown. There were a few vacant seats in our class that year of those whom we envied and missed because they were no longer lVIisses',. There were those who returned with a spark in their eyes and a sparkle on their finger! We watched our new library grow, and with the years we felt that we had grown, however, we had not overcome the fear of a Hpopl' or the dread of those ffblue-book days in January. We had not overcome the excitement of a dance week-end or an out-of-town football game. Within our hearts there was a greater respect for our Student Government and its Honor System, and there was a deeper love for Converse, its learning and its traditions. Our busy schedule began early in the year with our Senior Dance. We dare anyone to forget the parade that preceded itl With the grace and dignity characteristic of a Converse girl, our majorettes marched to the irregular beat of Casey Would Waltz With A Strawberry Blonde . Hard work and tireless effort were put on our Senior Show to make it a successful one. All year we wondered who would portray us at the Junior- Senior Banquet, and finally with surprise and amusement, we saw our odd characteristics enacted before us. When we saw our May Queen take her place on the throne, we realized that we were nearing the climax of four wonderful years. On the May morning when we took our places in line behind the faculty and marched in to Graduation Exercises, we thought that we had at last achieved the goal for which we had been working. But as we held our diplomas tightly in our hands, as we placed our robes on the shoulders of the rising Seniors, we realized that this had not been our goal at all. Instead, it lay far ahead of us in the future, and for each of us it was a different goal. Our college years had been only one step toward it. But they had been a big step and the future lay shining and golden before us. Yes, these have been four busy years . . . years full of memories, most of them shared, many of them personal. There have been tears, but there has been laughter. There have been mistakes, but there have been successes. Through it all, we have been a class united. We have had our disagreements and misunderstandings, but the spirit of cooperation and the bond of friendship have been so great that they have linked us together in a chain that cannot be broken. And now, although we leave college, we do not leave Con- verse, for we take with us our love for her traditions, our respect for her learning, our trust in her ideals, and our memories that shall never grow old. Senior Class Wall We, the senior class of 1951, being possessed of reportedly sound minds and most reluctant hearts, do hereby make our last will and testament for those that remain after us, with the hope that they will enjoy each moment as we have done. ARTICLE I-To the Faculty To MISS GEE, We leave our sincere devotion for she has truly been our College Mother. To MISS RICHARDS, we leave our everlasting love and appreciation for her sisterly guidance. To DR. MORGAN, we leave a five-year subscription to The Taller. To MRS. WEST, we leave a free ride on Halles' Comet. To DR. BOYD, we leave a private bus to transfer her sociology classes from one convention to another. To DR. WING, we leave a popcorn machine to be used anly during his movies. ARTICLE II-To Ihr' Slzrdenfs We, ANN GWATHMEY and DEVEAUX JOHNSTON, donate two charcoal self-portraits to replace the murals on the walls of Twitchell. We, BARBARA POPE and FLOSS MURPHREE, leave our deadened eardrums to whoever is unfortunate enough to have the telephone operator as their third roommate. I, JEANNE FRANK BUCKU HOLLERITH, leave my animal kingdom fwith the exception of Titoj to Ginny Lee Hunt. We, SARA TILLOTSON, MAZIE ZIMMERMAN, and MILDRED WYATT leave our pocketsize t'Einstein made mind slide rule to Bun Clinkscales'l Wyatt hoping that she, like we. can master her multipli- cation tables. We, V. H. ADDISON, MARY ANN FOSTER, EUNICE SULLI- VAN, MARJORIE JONES, and MAUDIE BULL, leave a giant-size bottle of ammonia to every girl with a twinkling third finger, left-hand. I, MARY JANE BEERS, leave t'Gun to be handled with care. We, PINKIE ABBOTT and 'tMOTHER CURRY, leave our White silk anklets to Mary Orr Riddick whose albino ankles need their support. We, NANCY ELLERBE and BETSY MALLARD, leave with secret intentions of getting our Ph.D.'s at Davidson. We, CAROLYN BYRD and MARY GILLESPIE, who are tired of the monotonous tower bell, leave to Wallace a set of Sewannee River chimes. Signed and sealed this twenty-eight day of May, in the year I95l, by Wilnesrer: -Doa' VVYATT, Tesfalor. FANNY FUNDERBURKE, T1-re MADwoMAN, DZ. Ml Senior Class Prophecy MARY MILLER Clam Prophcl The United Nations, Council of 1960 is now in session,'l proclaimed the Honorable Jane McNair, President of the U. N. I was already seated near the back of the assembly hall in Lake Success, N. Y., although my proposal was to be last on the agenda. A hush fell over the meeting as Reverend Bearden of Jerusalem gave her welcoming message. Evie Gilliland stood on a high pedestal overlooking the assembly, calling the roll from the U. N. scrollbook . . . Eskimo Abbott, Alaska, Pigmy Adams, South Africa, Adolph Anthony, Ger- many, Arab Beard, Egypt . . . Arab Beardl No response. lt must have slipped her mind. Then Tavie Rosenburg recorded her 25th absence. Suddenly pages Emily deLoach, Sharon Stockman, and Sissy Snow rushed to the platform announcing the arrival of a delegation representing the International F e d e r a t i o n of Musicians. M. E. Bullard, stormed through the doorway fol- lowed by B. Hudson, M. A. Phifer, M. N. Anderson, B. Alley, D. A. Marley, M. B. Pope, and F. F. Murphree. Their problem demanded the immediate attention of the U. N. Carnegie Hall had been invaded by Cousin Bud Littlejohn and her Yodling Ukes. The anti-classicalists charged with violating the international code of the Federation in- cluded Dee Michie, Feeny Dunlap, Polly Hill, Maudie Bull, Ann Lewis, Betty McGibony, and last and least Little Jimmy Dickens Ellerbe. The Assembly was in an uproar. President McNair was twitching her mouth until Dvorak Johnston, the Russian delegate, with her interpreter, Malak Zimmerman, made a motion to recess. Ching Gwathmey, the Mongolian representative, seconded the motion and the Assembly was dismissed. The corridor leading to the U. N. Snack Bar was Hooded with delegates. Behind the counter I could see Dot French, Ros Senseney, and Jess Wallace sampling each rush order. Tojo Buchanan was sitting in a secluded booth gobbling down a bowl of rice and staring through her slanted lids at Buddha Lewis who had just ordered her ninth roasted duck. Sitting on a table in the middle of the room was Gandhi Wyatt breaking her fasting with a stewed bird leg. I wandered down the hall peeping in one room then another until I came to the U. N. Museum. Eunice Sullivan greeted me with a smile and ushered me over to the World Scrapbook, edited by Peggy Thackston Toal. Glancing through the pages I noticed that Max Barnard had recently completed her global swim in less than 80 minutes .... The Life of Riley, Ann McCaskill's latest biography, was this year's best seller. . . . Mary Gillespie and Mildred Wyatt had proven Einstein's theories to be communistic .... Libby Hamer was voted Miss U. N. of 1960 with Charlotte Causey as runner-up. . . . Shirley Mae Mallard has mastered a double twirl jackknife from the Empire State Building to a bird bath in Central Park .... Betsy Ross Taylor's U. N. flag is now on display after 9 years of basting. My attention was diverted by a Spanish delegation composed of Jose Chenault and her Sen- ioritas Clinkscales, Thomas, Cheatham, llflauldin, Burnett, Turner, and Crawford who were observing Francisco Arnold's world-renown translation of Doia Barbara. W'e ambled into a small chamber labeled Nobel Prize Win- ners 1951-1960. Enclosed in a large glass case was a Snoddivari violin, masterpiece of Peggy Snoddy and her apprentice, Dot Jennings. In the corner of the room I noticed Mary Ann Foster and V. H. Addison, prospective brides, studying Doctors Helen Bredenburg and Suzie Godwinls magnetic clothesline. lt had the Good Housekeepers' Seal of Approval-the committee including Bettie Broyhill Dickson, Betty Harrington, Ramona Davis Thomas, and Martha Wallace Nelson. The Byrd-Hol- lerith atomic hockey stick lay on deep blue velvet and Cecil B. DeMille Barker's intricate miniature of Warwick Castle stood on a high pedestal near the door. Eunice reminded me that the recess period had ended, so I rushed back to the assembly hall. The French interpreters, Mademoiselles Ogden and Fraser ushered me to the speaker's box where I was to present my proposal. Nancy Blakely and Ann Momeier, international correspondents were standing at my elbow as I faced the Assembly and stated, Lincolnton requests that she be repre- sented on the U. N. Council. A hush fell over the room until Carolyn Spinks, the Egyptian representative, demanded discussion. My spokesmen, Mary Jane Beers and Betty Tonge began a heated filibuster. Finally, after five long hours, Mar- garet Curry, Secretary General, called for a vote into yea or nay, while Sara Tillotson counted them on her pocket add- ing machine. I was squirming in my seat until President McNair announced the results-only one negative vote. I should have known it would be Georgia Free, my bitter Bamberg opponent. Tre fzj' wer 48 951 We were less in number but not in spirit that day last fall when we returned to our friends and our college. Deep inside us, there burned a new feeling-a feeling that filled us with both pride and a strong sense of responsibility. VVe were upperclassmen! To be sure, we smiled just a little smugly the first time we strolled in from a date at 11:00 instead of at 10:30. Not to mention our broad grin at the midnight hour on Saturday night! But there were other things, bigger things than just upper- classmen privileges to make us realize our new importance. Now we had Little Sisters. They kept us busy, since each of us had at least two. But we loved it, and tried very hard to give them that feeling of security which our Big Sisters had given us. Then there was junior-Senior. Eagerly we searched a sea of faces to find just the right one to impersonate each senior, and chuckled at their frantic attempts to guess who it would be. There were little things, too, familiar things that took on a new meaning because we felt they were ours . . . the junior Shop Chow we hated the sight of Bologna sometimeslb . . . the day our rings came . . . the excitement of seeing our hockey team headed for the goal. Now we have lived it all . . . the thrill of being a Freshman, the importance of being a Sophomore, the pride of being a junior. Each was wonderful, a memory never to be forgotten. There remains only the hnal and best step of our college career . . our Senior year. Vile are ready to take it. Treamrer 951 Time at Converse has been a creator, an insti- gator, and a teacher. lt has created, from happy days and weeks, our Sophomore year, which holds the delightful experiences we've shared and which now is terminating. It has created lasting friend- ships between the members of our class, it has created a deeper and fuller understanding of one another, it has created a close, loyal relationship which will be present throughout the remainder of our lives at Converse-and after Converse. It has instigated the wonderful thrill we experi- enced as we slipped, tiptoeing practically, to the hockey field that particular night in October, and as we marched triumphantly across the golf course toward the freshman dorms to begin Rat VVeek. It has instigated the feeling of belonging-paw ticipating in athletics, watching our teams winning or losing, winning our Block 'fC's , going to the hockey bonfires, taking part in the swimming pageant and in May Day, and being terribly proud of everything each of us accomplishes, of being a part of a wonderful group. It has instigated happiness and sparkling fun-preparing for the Christmas party, growing excited over holidays, playing and singing together in the dorms and on hikes, being glad together over good news and being sympathetic over bad news, listening to and narrating our many 'ftales of woe , getting frantic over exams and shouting for joy when exams were over and everyone had passed. Time has taught us the meaning of friendship, of loyalty, of cooperation, of participation, of good sportsmanship, of understanding, of sympathy, of indefatigable striving to develop into a more per- fect woman, of every significant and insignificant aspect of life. But more than these, it has taught us happiness that we obtained together. Now, time has taken over again and we find ourselves leaving behind us our Sophomore year and moving to our Junior year. Next year We'll return-our class will have grown smaller, but there will always be a place for each departed member. We'll renew together all the unforget- table memories, all the wonderful things that occurred during our second year at Converse. We'll be back, and next year and the next, all that we've done and all that we've learned will become more deeply imprinted on us and will appear in everything we do. We'll never forget. 'We wondered Whether We could possibly absorb all the intricate rules. Soon the feeling of belonging came to us. Our Big Sisters, along With all upperclassmen, were our friends in every predicament. It is their purpose to establish a school behind and in front of the footlights so that students may take part either as actors or as stage workers. Membership may be obtained through tryouts, or in some cases, by recogni- tion of work done as a footlighter. Plays, which the members of the organization may help select, are presented at intervals throughout the year. These productions are directed by Nliss Abbott, Head of the Speech Department. It is the aim of this organization to teach the principals of drama so that its participants will acquire a deeper appreciation and understand- ing of dramatic arts. DOROTHY Vl'Y.X'l l' . 'f A' A ,, CARSON CIIALK DALE DAVIS FOX GARRETT HUNT KEARNS LINDSAY MCALISTER MERRY TOWNSEND CRES The Crescent is a living symbol of the growth of an individual. lt is living because it is an active symbol, because it is a personilication of constructive ideas, because it is an animated expression of thoughts. It is a symbol of growth because it involves a growing and genuine interest in and understanding of others, a growing unselhsh leadership, a growing depth of character, and a growing scholarship. The purpose of the Crescent is to serve as a medium through which the Freshman and Sophomore classes, together with the upper classes and organizations, can work in construc- tive and effective activities for the betterment of our college. The Crescent members are chosen from the Freshman class by a nominative vote by the class as a whole. The final election is made by the active members of the organization. The name, the Crescent, implies the time that is required for a new moon to grow to its fullest. Thus, the Crescent, at the beginning and at the end of a period of four years, is a simile of the Converse student, who is extending and expanding to her potential capacity.
