Like all new classes we were maybe afraid at Hrst. The greatest help in our adjustment was Miss Richards, who came to Converse as dean the year we cameas freshmen. From the first she has been our inspiring guide and understanding Converse sister. We were her fresh- men , and now we are her seniorsv. Our love and trust will always be hers. Converse has heard our laughter, and she has seen our tears. We've been happy, and we've made our mistakes. And here we have grown. A All of us have memories. Some are shared . . . those of the wonderful experiences and ral ood times of college life-and some are personal and distinct. But they all merge gene g into that love, and contribute to forming loyalty we have for our college. We are sad to leave our friends and our happy times here. Yet we realize that the college years for us are ending, and with the sad thoughts of separation, there's the new thought and sight of a future. Weive lived and learned here . . . we've learned to live here. Now we want to leave with a pledge in our hearts to live up to what we have received from Converse. They were green, and asked stupid questions occasionally, but they were keen. They saw the five towers of Converse reach- ing for the sky, and they saw the twining ivy that fondly annual junior-Senior Banquet-tl1e,skits,'the programs, and us with the Senior of our choice enjoying it every bitj IrVith the coming of spring that year, we began to see, a little sadl the end in si ht, for the members of our . is of fe, meljsnlzioum rofiw 'tled 3 I II and Ilusdy enU Pub I , milelvlsgfeby make III e se2.i1f?'?e WUIUMIIS' Bmhflia covered the old buildings. These freshmen absorbed what they saw. And these freshmen are we, the seniors of '48. Our four years, packed with living and laughing, and some crying, have become past tense, and at the close of this short span, we End ourselves clinging to the many things Converse has shown us-to memories that quicken a laugh or encourage tears, to memories that end with a deep sigh of those were the days . And they were the days! From the very first we were a class undivided, we worked hard and we played hard, always together. It all began with the entrance tests and the confusing days of orientation, we were getting adjusted to each other and to the life at Converse. Then, with the ever-ready advice from the Sophomores, the patient help of our Big Sisters, and the smiling encour- agement from the Seniors, it wasnit long before we felt that we were a vital part of the Converse life. We were united with our Sister Class in the traditional junior-Freshman Wedding early in the fall, and with the election of our class officers, representatives to the council and cabinets, we soon felt ourselves strongly knit together as a class. We wrote our class song and sang it often, with much spirit. In the spring of that year, the war in Europe came to a close, and we went home for the summer with an unusual anticipation for the coming college year. When September of '45 came, we were back at Con- verse, with even more vigor, as we assumed our places as the mighty Sophsn. This year Rat Week was to be conducted by us, and though the feeling was one of authority, we were more nervous and excited than the rats -but it was a successful Rat Week, and we made many close friends in the venture. Sometimes we be- came despondent as Sophomores, and dissatisfied with our work, but the happy days greatly exceeded those blue days, and we find ourselves remembering them more clearly. The flu epidemic caused us to go home for Christmas holidays two weeks early, and though we were excited about that, we regretted missing the carolling and Christmas festivities at Converse. Senior- Sophomore day is a big bright spot in the memory of each of us-such fun to don a gown and an air of dignity! Our next year at Converse found us the typical jolly Juniors , and what a thrill to be a Big Sister! We were upperclassmen now, and discovered that the privileges of that status involved many responsibilities and a good deal of work. WVe spent busy, but happy nights in the Little Shop concocting sandwiches of all varieties, and though we complained about collecting coke bottles, we had fun doing it. This year we all had a part in the Iunior-Freshman Ceremony by giving our Little Sisters bracelets as a symbol of our unity. Those days in Febru- ary stand out decidedly as busy, gay ones, for we loved every minute of preparing for our own Junior Dance- and such a success it was! All of the Iuniors in black with bouquets of yellow daffodils made our dance have double meaning, for those were our class colors. How well we remember the work and play involved in the Y, S l , class were elected to fill the Seniors offices. vBut, 011 Graduation Day when we saw our Sophomores receive their diplomas, and when at the Senior Luncheon we were given our caps and gowns, we all knew that the time had come-we were the Seniors. And so, this year we returned to Converse as a class for the last time, and fell into our roles of tired old Seniorsv, but our spirits were willing and young. We assumed the duties and responsibilities that go with be- ing in this class. We remember pleasantly our Senior Dance, the Senior-Sophomore Day, when we lost all our dignity and acted the role of brats. junior-Senior this year was a big success, and we laughed to see ourselves portrayed as others see us! Such are the memories of the class of '48, but there are recollections of Converse that come to our mind even stronger than these. In a few years we will surely sense a warm glow inside when we remember the spirit of the Bonfires on the Hockey Field, the quiet worship- fulness of YU services and candlelight vespers in Main Hall, the friendly hello of any Converse girl one meets on the campus, the noisy fun in the Little Shop at night, the singing when a group of girls are together, the anticipation of our beautiful May Day, the bull sessions late at night, the bridge games in front of the Little Chapel, the quiet in the Dining Room when the P. V. came out, the Christmas Tree and parties in the Dining Room. All this we will remember as Converse, a spirit intangible, yet evident and contagious-a spirit that has become so absorbed into our very beings that our lives will inevitably reflect the influence which our four years here has had upon us. And, here, we have finished our chapter in the history of a class. We leave Converse with something of what we saw as curious, eager Freshmen, only now, what we saw has become a symbol of what we learned during our short stay: we saw the twining ivy fondly covering the old buildings, and we saw the five towers reaching for the sky. -ERMINE F LoYD, Class H istorian. W'itnesses: I. M. TIRED, U. R. Tnw. J SENICDR CLASS PROPHECY SCENE: A comfortable sitting room, which somewhat resembles Miss Richards' room. Tech pennants drip from the ceiling. T nm: 1958. Crrarmcreus: Skippy Herbert and May Bynum. Curtain rises and we find them seated, cozily drinking tea. They have just left a class reunion. Bynum: Well, Skippy, this is a swell layout you've got here. There's one thing I canit understand though. I-low is it you've got Miss Richard's suite and they've moved her into the council room? . Skippy: You know, after we graduated, I got a job as foreign correspondent with Life Magazine. Well, one day I was riding along in my jinrikisha in Singapore reading my mail, when I came upon a letter from Dr. Cwathmey. It said that if I didn't come back and untangle the girls from their knitting that they would neverggraduate. He and Miss Richards had discussed the matter and o ered me twice a much as Life paid me plus Miss Richards' suite of rooms. So-here I am. Bynum: You must get awfully lonely here all by yourself. Skippy: Not at all. You remember Edith Bikle and Dottie Wright, don't you? You probably noticed that no one mentioned them at the reunion this afternoon. Well-the annual our senior year was, shall we say, rather extravagant. The school authorities held them responsible for this and Dottie and Bikle are still pay- ing for it. They're chained to stakes down in the basement where they used to store trunks. They paint study signs and get a penny a hundred for them. Remind me tomorrow and I'll go down to the D. A.'s office and et the key. I know they'd love to see you. Itis so damp and dark down there. But-tell me about your- self-what have you been doing? Bynum: I hate to brag-but I have received a very singular honor. I am the newly elected president of the W. C. T. U. and really it takes all my time . . . going to temperance meetings and going with the other girls into those despicable little bars. The men get so mad when we sing our tricky little campaign songs. Skippy: It surely was good to see Betty Anne Welch today. She handled the reunion just like she used to handle our class meetings. Bynum: Yes. After graduation she taught Bible at Duke awhile, then she became Dean of Men. And next week she's going to marry the president. They say she's only marrying him so she can get tickets for all the football games on the fifty-yard line. Skippy: Did you know that Virginia Ellison, Betsy Ennis and lean Sackett are working real hard on the cooperation of protestant churches in Spartanburg. They look so cute riding around to campaigns in Virginia's little Model A Ford. Bynum: I went over to a baseball game at Wofford the other day, and saw Drucilla Searcy still knitting on that angora sweater she started our freshman year. Skippy: Betty Baker came by to see me the other day. She has been trying to breed a horse that sheis not allergic to, and two weeks ago she had success. She rode the strange-looking critter up from Newberry. Bynum: Speaking of horses, did you know that Lorene Alderman is a horse psychologist? Her horses are winning all the races- it must work real well. Skippy: Did you notice Tina IValker at the reunion today. She's now making monogrammed table mats for a living. She was working diligently on some at the meeting. And speaking of working diligently, Kafoo McNair is now National Commander of the Boy and Cirl Scouts of America. I thought surely shefs be married but she said that she couldn't give up all those darling children for one man. Bynum: Do you ever hear Iane Taylor on the Hit Parade? It seems that L. A. tSpeedD Riggs heard her teaching one of her Biology classes and now she has the distinction of being the only female tobacco auctioneer in the country. Skippy: Did you know that Sybil Creighton is married? She told me that she met a boy who just loves argyle socks and she loves to make them so they got married. Bynum: Have you heard about the celebrity in our class? Betty Cloud is now in Switzerland in the National Olympics. Shels the U. S. entry in the new competition, gum popping. They Say the odds are ten to one that she'll win. Skippy: Did you see Dot Ayers' and Anne Prothro's office right down the hall? The one with the sign on the door, Let U5 Plan Your Devilment For Youv. Bynum: Speaking of doing for others, I saw Jean McSween and Sis Ramseur over here the other day. Iean said that they became so attached to the Greenville-Spartanburg dual lane highway while at Converse that theyire running a Converse Specialf' bus line over it every week-end. By the way, why didn't Pat Bollman come to the reunion today? Skippy: Well, while in New York studying Psychology, she went to some comedian's radio program and sat on the front row. Several times she gave out with that utraumatici' laugh of hers and first thing she knew she had signed a twenty-year contract to sit on the front row and laugh at that comedian. Bynum: Isn't E0 Garvin doing something like that? Skippy: Yes, she's known as the gigglev. She is interviewed on Allen's Alley and every time Fred asks her anything she just giggles. Bynum: Betty Sherrill is still in Spartanburg. She upholstered so many chairs during our senior year that she opened up a shop. Nancy Tysinger Haynes is with her giving knitting lessons: Their shop is named The Sit Knit and their slogan is Cit a Fit at the Sit Knit'. Skippy: Emma jane Mims and Rangley Turner have written a very informative book entitled F or Women Only . It gives a very detailed outline of how the young college girl should act while at West Point. Bynum: You know Max Schumann was in S. C. doing some research on his latest book, Mr. Mason and Mr. Dixon Meet Mr. Line when what to his wondering eyes should appear but Lois Robbins. Lodestone he cried, nuzzling her shoes and then he took her back to New York with him where she is currently playing the feminine lead in Barefoot Boy With Cheek . Skippy: Speaking of actresses, have you seen Emily May Peed and Wallace Berry in their latest movie? After Marjorie Main retired Wally wrote to his good friend Miss Abbott and asked for a good character actress. Peecl was what he got and she's doing a good job. By the way, why didn't Robin Robins come to the reunion? Bynum: I got a letter from her and sheis having the same trouble she had at Converse. She has to spend all her spare time deciding which college to go to each week-end. She's really grown up though-she's dating the professors now instead of the students. Skippy: Speaking of professors, I was amazed when Marian Ritchie told me what she and Bess Wolfe are doing. After they left Converse they opened a school in public speaking. They have invented all sorts of devices to make speaking easier. She was telling me about a monster they have who leers at the students. They also have a laughing hyena who makes fun of speakers. After all that public speaking is comparatively easy, she says. Bynum: Nell Sutlduth Hood was there today with her two children. Skippy: Yes, I saw that story book family of hers. They have such cute names, Robin Hood and Little Red Riding Hood. 'Bynum: It was good to see Ioan Schlaudt at the reunion. How did she ever get enough money to build a special library for History Majors? She says she has lots of fun working there. Oh-I was in Margaret Banks' shoe store in Columbia the other day. Shes got lt fixed up real cute with little stuffed animals everywhere. Skippy: .Have you heard of the new platter party Ann Bachman and Frankie Lankfortl have over WSPA? Bach calls herself Bach, the Platter Iock . They have taken over Ace's place in entertain- ing the Converse girls during their late hours. Bynum: Frances jackson has opened a new business. You know, she always loved to take -baths and now she has started a new beauty salon where she gives only baths. They are supposed to tone the skin. Skippy: Our classmate of whom I'm really proud is Mr. 5ifJCGl7'lTt1S. Have you seen his latest movie? They call him the Oy Wlfll the dancing fingers and he puts Jose Iturbi to shame. Btlnumf He hasnlt amfthing on Nancy Renaker. She's playing at the Stork.Club and has her own original style. She stands behind the piano and leans over it to play. Skippy: YOU kH0YV, Betty Styron has a novel idea. She married gl Octor and he didnt want her to work so they compromised. ie sings into a mrcrophone and its piped into his office. Now as soon as she finds a stray dog she to 1l'6 takes him home and gives him a bath, a name, and a home. Skippy: You know, Martha Horton has figured out a method hich she can knit play bridge and learn her Metropolitan by W C . Q 9 opera at the same time. It takes a complicated brain to figure out all that. Bynum: Have you heard Emily Shadburrfs radio program? Skippy: No, I haven't. What time does it come on? Bynum: That's the point. Shad is always late so any time she arrives at the studio they put her on. She's on every day. Listen all day long, you'll probably hear her. Skippy: Becky Wright has gone into music in a big way. She plays drums witl1 Gene Krupa at night and practices with the New York Philharmonic as tympanist during the day. Bynum: I had the best time talking to Annis Black today. You remember how she used to talk about Blanche's stone benches. Well, after painting blouses 'til they were way out of style, she finally got enough money to buy the bench. Skippy: I got a letter from Marilouise Chauncey the other day, explaining why she couldn't come. She always wanted to marry a diplomat but it seems she never could find the right one. So h settled for a missionary The funniest part 1S that the church s e - sent him to Charleston, S. C. to promote better relations between the aristocracy and the commoners. You never can tell what you're going to be doing. Millie Hamlin used to tell me that if she ever saw a body of water larger than a bath tub after she graduated from Converse, she would come back to Spartanburg and personally push herself off the ivy-coxperid . . , . . t e towers. And what IS she doing now? She s national director o Red Cross Aquatic Schools. Bynum: That's life. Look at Mary Barker. She wrote so many letters while at Converse I never thought she'd be able to write , . , . t I another one. Now shes the Presidents corresponding secre a y. B. Hart bought up all the movies in Spartanburg and are now making quite a bit of money. I heard that they decided that it would be cheaper to buy the movies than to pay every time they wanted to go. I Bynum: I saw Jean Love for a few minutes today. She's bring- mg up all her children to be doctors and I. R. C. presidents. Skippy: Her family life probably isn't any more interesting than Teresa Hughesf She never has been able to give up her love for the barn so her whole family eats all meals over there. Bynum: Let me tell you the blow. Caroline Brown is dietitian at Davidson. They .say that for once she's satisfied with food served in a college dining room. It's seasoned perfectly. Skippy: Speaking of our girls in other schools, we have two very distinguished deans in our midst. Caroline DesChamps has gone back to Raleigh to be dean of St. Mary's and Peggy Robertson is dean at Iuillard. Bynum: I was up at Lake Summit last summer and I saw Betty Crowell. Sheis running a speed boat company. Skippy: Myrle Park, Mary Lou Anthony, and Harriet Morgan are now owners of a pre-Converse school. It trains girls for Converse. Bynum: Jeanne Barrett, Mike Harrington, and Mary jane Hilde- brand have the cutest little kindergarten in Columbia. They teach the children music along with other various subjects. Skippy: Ethel Hantske is a doctor now. They tell me she has to consult Lib Jenkins, the complexion authority, often. I t lk d to Ermine Floyd today She doesnt seem to Bynum: a e ' - have a bit of trouble being a housewife, mother, governor of ' ' d ' r at the South Carolina, Editor of flhe State paper, an a smge Met. She tells me she sees Nancy Steele all the time. Nancy seems to be doing real well at the Met, too. Margaret Hall Iones h d 'ob, too. She doesn't consider taking care of her h ar 1 . 03511 asix children enough fun so she has opened a baby-srtters establishment and they say you often go to her house and find fifty children in the living room. They crawl from beneath the piano keys and swing from the chandelier. Skippy: Good gosh, Bynum, it's four o'clock in the moming. 'd a You know they were a grand bunch of gals. We were upperclassmen-we had Little Sisters, -we were jolly juniorsv. There was a new thrill in college for there were different interests for us in our third year. Our friendship with our sister class began early with the barbecue. We still remem- bered our own freshman days and helping the class of ,5l get adjusted was a pleasant task. Later there was the junior-Freshman ceremony which symbolized for the two classes the intangible union of love and friendship. Then we had the junior Shop too-and were we proud of the new coke machine purchased by us. In December we sponsored the annual Christmas Bazaar. After the joyous holidays came the bleak january and exams. But even blue books couldn't drown the jolly juniors' spirit. ln February there was the junior Dance, and later the junior-Senior Banquet. We poured Olll' time and combined effort and all the money we had been earning in the junior Shop into making these two projects a jolly success. Spring 'came and with elections we began to realize that our junior year was closing. Farewells to our senior class was sad, but with the donning of our caps and gowns we felt a new dignity and responsibility. juniors we were no longer-but We knew we'd be jolly t0O-Safe in the Sef1i0f Class- Officers BETTY K. We buzzed back to the campus, laughing and crying too, with a Hi-Yan for everybody and found new duties in our exalted position. We clambered around, plans galore, with all our interests just spilling forth. First came -Ahal Rat Week! How we planned to teach those newcomers a thing or two-and what short memories we seem to have. We funeral marched over to freshmen dorms and unearthed all quivering mice. Believe us! It,s not so easy as it looks! Then we settled into our routine of fun, fun, fun, classes, fun. Christmas found us busy with decorating the tree, carolling, the Sophomore party Qmore funl and-ol' Saint Nick's visit. We dressed doll babies for YU Qand secretly played with them when no one was lookingj, flew to meetings of this and that, drew posters, manufactured endless things for the dramav, trudged miles on hikes, and became neurotics from psych knowledge. We played with the Teletalk , corrected in correctives, lingered long in the Little Shop, avidly athleticed , everything many', Cgoodj or few Cba-a-a-adl. We thoroughly enjoyed every phase of our college year: too, we were really a longed-for part of Converse and trying to attain her spirit in our very own way. But it wasnit just studying that made us feel at home. Soon we had our representatives on Council, Yu, and the A. A. Board. Some of us were reporters for the Parley V00, others were ad-getters for the annual and Concept. We tried out for the Palmetto Players, the Hyatt Music Club, and worked on various committees. Our own publication, We, the Freshmen, made us very proud. Sports demanded lots of our time. Exhausting? Sure, but we learned to play a better game and best of all we learned the true meaning of a good Converse Sport.
