L'if 1t1f1W H1 ,T N - Wav .1 . day in September, 1942, that into eager, expectant and what the luture held for us. Yes, lor like most other new students we were still somewhat on the 'thigh horsen ol' be- ing high school graduates the spring before. This feeling was short lived, though, as rat weelc came around in a few weeks and we were lcnoclced down to our rightful place. From that position we have risen in four years again to seniors and pros- pective graduates. Those lour years have been paclced lull of worlc and play, most all ol which was fun, and which must soon assume a place with us lcnown as umemories of Converse . From the very beginning we have been an ath- letic class. This was evidenced at Class Day each year when we beamed with pride as the athletic awards were read: tennis, class of '46, golf, class of '46, swimming, class of ,465 basketball, class ol '46: etc. Yes, we were certainly possessed of brawn if not brain. We have been musical, loo, and are proud of the big parts many of our number have had in the musical productions during our four years. Dramatics has been an outstanding phase ol col- lege for some of us, and we've all had our hands in writing--anywhere from those freshman themes to writing for one of the publications. But to begin where all things begin-at the be- ginning'-let's turn baclc to that September, 1942. we've already mentioned. During those lirst lew days we struggled together through the entrance tests and the problems ol: becoming adjusted, but with the help ol the sophomores, the understand- ing words of our junior sisters, and the smiles ol the enviable seniors, we managed to feel lilce a real part ol the Converse lamily before many days had passed. Vve were united with our sister class at the traditional Junior-Freshman wedding that fall, and the election of our own class officers and class representatives to the council and cabinets made us feel even more strongly tied to and a part ol Converse. The following spring the year-old war was eminent in the mind of everybody and in view of the wartime travel conditions we gave up spring holidays. The next fall we necessarily assumed the role of high 'n mightyn sophomores and believe me, the rat weelc, which we supervised this time, was a great success. it has been said that the second is the least eventful of the four years in college. but we made a worthy attempt to disprove this. If the moments seemed to get dull so many of us would gather in one room, and more precisely, on one bed, that the bed was frequently lmown 42 CLASS HI TURY to collapse. We did grow dignified at least one day that year--Senior-Sophomore Day. As jolly, and we might add busy, juniors it was a real thrill to be ubig sisters and to try to help our ulittle sisters get adjusted. The Junior Shop was our pride and joy tand headache, when we had to collect colie bottlesi, and when we tool: it over, we really began to feel the duty and re- sponsibility that goes with that class. The Junior- Freshman Vvedding was our first big undertak- ing as upperclassmen. We loved every bit of it, too'-the planning, the decorating, and actually putting it on. The Junior Dance with its valen- tine motil and the Junior-Senior Banquet were highlights oi that year, too. Again the student body voted to forego spring holidays and accept Presidents Boards proposed plan lor curtailed week-ends to help eliminate the national travel congestion. Vvith elections last spring, we began to sense that feeling of being seniors, but it wasn't until we stood in front of those graduating last May 20th and were given caps and gowns. the tangi- ble evidence of this class, that we felt the posi- tion which was ours. And so this year we tell into the role of utired old seniors . For the first time since weld been in college the world was at peace and we were able to watch it progress instead of being torn to pieces. Besides the duties and responsibilities that go with being in this class, we remember with pleasure our Senior Dance, Senior-Sophomore Day twith us as mischievous brats this timej, the notorious minstrel, and the Junior-Senior banquet. These things we will remember with our class, but our real Hmemories ol' Converse will un- doubtedly include the spirit of the Athletic Bon- lires, the atmosphere of the Y services, the ex- citement ol May Day, the Little Shop sessions. the Christmas pageants, the Christmas parties. and the singing that inevitably results when there's a group ol Converse girls together. Vve will remember these things lor the reason that they are a traditional part of every year and that they result from the spirit oi cooperation, good sportsmanship and love which is Converse's. Because of these things, it is hard for us to have to walk out ol the portals for the last time. but because ol them, too. and the wisdom and understanding we have gained here. we feel bet- ter able as young women to talce our places in the new world with the varied situations it may offer. The memory of these things will give us a strength ol mind lor whatever awaits us. BETTE JANE Woooslns, Class Historian. THE ICTURY After the storm The whole earth lay passive and beaten Under its weight of white and icy death Yet only the trees held out With brittle arms sleeved in ice Making stuhhorn ellaows To push into the sky. All night long Screaming like women in pain We heard them. Their cries shrill in the frigid night. One by one they broke The sudden splintering and the tinlcle Like breaking glass The crash, the groan The long shudder and the sigh. The storm suddenly loosed his icy grip Like a young angry god Flushed with victory sprinted away And Hinging one look-'half pity, half triumph Ar his victim. And the sun shone On the battered earth ' The weak and watery sunlight 1 Found the trees Stripped and broken N Making curious angles in the sky Showing white scars of agony And hrittle branches at their feet. 1 Yet there were those who With slow easy swings Pulled loaclc up into the sun. For they unresisting had bent And given with the storm and the wind Not fighting the greater force And they still stood and lived. f-'BETTY ALLEN. 43 4 I n ,S fl' ,X A' eff 7 K 9 fl 'f If 'Z gem ff . llfii-if -- , itifif-It if f ..-. !gl i1,'! -1 ,r ,flu ii l ' ff' l fl at . MU IC Everybody here is connected with our music school . . . directly or indirectly. Some are music students, others live on halls with music students land we get to spealc to 'em sometimes, toolj, and others still just live near the music school. And every girl arrives eventually at the Music Building, if lor nothing more than the weeicly chapel services. Some of these services have been given over entirely to performances by or sponsored by the music department. A scene from Car- men by four of Mr. Stables pupils, a program of songs by Mrs. George McKee, well-icnown soprano and wife of one of the language professors, and a group of light semi-classical songs sung by Maury Pearson, the be- loved Spartanburg baritone, have all been presented this year. The music building itself seems to be a massive and undirected choir with each open window singing blatantly. But that's just mass production. Anyone that has been to one of the student recitais, and heard the results will lcnow the true meaning of Upractice malces periectu. Don't thinlc our music students do nothing but live in a pill box. tPilI box, affectionate name for practice rooms, is actually an exaggeration, for the rooms are really about the size of orange crates.j But again, music students not only practice, but they do many things, always with good results. Converse on the Air , which is- over WORD on Wednesday nights is usually music presentations by the students. This year Converse has had a student orchestra lor the first time, OTE and with lwr. Bleclcschmidt as conductor, it has become an essential part of the school lite. ' The Hyatt Music Club has always been one oi the outstanding organizations here, and was no exception this past year. Gne ol the outstanding things done by the club this year was sponsoring a reception for Helen Jepson after her concert in Spartanburg. For over liity years Converse has been the center of the annual Music Festival, which is loolced forward to by all in this section. This year the festival was no less spectacular, exciting and enjoyable. Miss Paula Lench- ner, young soprano and winner oi the American Fed- eration oi Music Clubs for i91l5, was special guest. During the festival, concerts were given by the David- son College band, the Spartanburg Symphony 0r- chestra, and Mr. Ralph Kirlcpatriclc, famous harp- sichordist. The part played by Converse in the Music Festival was Gilbert and Suliivan's H. M. S. Pinafore, pro- duced and directed by Mr. Leroy Tebbs. Mr. Tebbs, a noted authority on Gilbert and Sullivan, has been a member of our faculty this winter, teaching voice. The student orchestra played for the operetta and the parts were talcen by Converse girls and boys fyes, we have several co-eds in the music schoolj, men and women from Spartanburg, and Vvolilord boys. Yes, our music school affects every girl here, and whether she malce a tune, carry a tune, or listen to a tune. each Converse student is proud of the Music School Gtnnuvrnr Glnllvgv SPARTANBURG, SOUTH CAROLINA cc O 7: AN OUTSTANDING LIBERAL ARTS COLLEGE FOR WOMEN PROGRESSIVE IN ITS EDUCATIONAL PROGRAM RICH IN FINE TRADITIONS A NOTABLE SCHOOL OF MUSIC WITH A FACULTY OF CONCERT ARTISTS SUMMER TERM OF SIX WEEKS HIGH SCHOOL GRADUATES MAY BEGIN COLLEGE WORK THIS SUMMER cc I 77 For I nformation, Address .'
