Dr. Morgan, our Academic Dean, pos- sesses these qualities. As a teacher and a friend he has obtained the admi- ration and respect of both the students and the faculty. It is through such in- telligent supervision as he has been able to give that we have advanced and then maintained our high standards. I4 BOARD OF TRUSTEES J. CHOICE EVINS, Pre5icIent. .... S. F. Ji JZJQJOKZVLZ af CTOVLVKZJG Little did the Class of '43 realize when it be- gan its work at Converse that it would be the tirst graduating class in a World War ll. Times have changed as they always do, and that cocksure bunch of rats has become a class of girls which is going away from school with a purpose adept to a war-time crisis. But let's go back to when it all began. Remem- ber-all those big shots who graduated from high school 'n' prep school in '39 . . . l-low much fun they had deciding on Converse for an alma mater 'n' all those letters during the summer . . . The ones from Sis 'n' Maxie 'n' Marjie, and that important one from the big sister? All the fun getting ready to go away 'n' how scared we were though we wouldn't dare admit it? And those cguestions we wanted to ask, and didnit, and wished we had. Yes, we finally got here. Some with Umommas 'n' poppasf' some with sisters, 'n' a few of us ventured in all alone. We got those roommates settled and the big sisters showed us our way around. But what was this rat week thing we'd heard whisperings about? Well, we found out! Leighton Acree lshe was the Sophomore Pres- ident, you knowl, told us in no uncertain terms what we had to do in' a lot about what we couldnit do. Fifty-nine pigtails and paper dry- cleaning bag dresses just about put us through. We couldnit tear the dresses and we had to button, too. lt just didn't seem logical. We got the grass well watered with our thimbles and pretty well cut with our scissors, and Little Toole even played l-lumpty Dumpty with an honest-to-goodness egg. You guessed right! l-lumpty Dumpty fell all right-in a great big bunch of Sophomores. And did she have fun cleaning it up! Before we knew it, the thing was over and the Junior-Freshman Wedding was staring us in the face. We were all betting on who the bride would be, and the suspense was territic. When Jean Bumstead came down the aisle of the auditorium to be wed to our sister class, you can imagine how thrilled we were. Lib Lyles was maid-of-honor, and the whole atfair went otf like the real thing. The rats were always up to tricks, 'n' prob- ably the funniest of all happened in Dexter the day before the tirst dance. About the middle of the afternoon the Dexterities discovered that they had no shoes in which to trip the light fantastic and they were nowhere to be found. Tempus fugitedn and at exactly 8:20 all the shoes appeared in one pile in the third floor iron- ing room. Whewl Were we glad to see 'em even if it was a struggle to find two alike. A lot happened that year but the most im- portant event came after Thanksgiving. The elec- tion of class otficersl Billie Goodwin became pres- ident to 'fill the shoes of little Dot Jenkins who had been our adviser. Billie had what it takes, 'n' led the class through the rest of the year. There were plenty of homesick girls after the tirst Christmas at home, but exams soon put a stop to that. One lapse of our college career passed with a lot of ups and downs, but we felt more like we belonged after we'd struggled through that set of information pleases. . Billie was re-elected President of the class, and we put our heads together to start plans for the great event ot our lives. This time we'd be the big dogs lor a change. They say that nobody likes a Sophomore, but we did our darndest to break a precedent. Ratting was iun, but a struggle. Then and there we decided we'd ten times rather be ratted a year than to rat for a week. Perhaps the biggest event in a Converse big dogs' life is Senior-Sophomore Day. We donned black caps ,ni gowns lthe ones we wish we could un-don nowl and thought we were just about wraps? As usual, the Sophomore Class dwindled prac- tically away, and we came back the next lall minus members but thinking that maybe it was quality rather than quantity that counted alter all. A few transfers joined our happy family, but the class remained a small one. For that all-important year Stewn was our president 'ni Bobbe Milburn was heap big custodian oi the coke machine 'n' the Junior Shop. Remember all the things that happened . . . becoming the proud possessors of little sisters . . . the Junior-Freshman Wed- ding . . . the Christmas Bazaar . . . the Junior Dance . . . and, tinally, the thing we'd been working- towards all year-the Junior- Senior. It was a busy year. We won the shield 'n' then Cupid went on the rampage 'n' tried to take the U rest of our class away. We practically out-did the Seniors with the sparklers in our midst. December 7 of that year was a very important date in our lives. The attack on Pearl l-larbor made a big scratch on our complacency and we suddenly grew into a more serious minded rising Senior Class. With the Fact that we were a war Class imprinted upon our minds, we took more seriously the tasks of our senior year. Our holidays were changed, rationing started and we had to give up some of the little nice- tiesi' weid been accustomed top but we knew that it was only small sacritice in comparison with the war classes ol other countries. All ot our work became more closely connected with the war ettortg but the traditions and spirit that make Converse, Converse, were not iorgotten. Our last dance . . . the parties in the dining room . . . sponsors for the hockey games lremember Miss Thompson and the run- away horse 'n' buggyl . . . the Christmas tree in Main . . . dressing dolls For the mountain children . . . our last tling at being childish on Senior-Sophomore day . . . all these things were not forgotten nor will they be as long as twe memories ol Converse live with us, the Class ol ,43. As we leave our alma mater, it is the com- mencement oi ulivingi'-living the ideals which we have lormed in Converse and which Converse has Formed in us. Now that the present senior class is on the threshold of death-and being away from Converse will kill many of us--preparing to step into the vast unknown and unpredicted orbit at this time called the world, it has been my pleasant duty to contact the unhappy members of this graduating class and endeavor to make them realize the importance of leaving to remaining individuals not quite as well educated as we, the things which we dare not carry from the halls of Converse into newly made homes, our mother's homes, old-maid homes, and homes blown into bits by Nazi bombs. Without further comment on world affairs, I do hereby release the following will and testament: l, Lib Adams, leave my most democratic personality to Lalla Green Nimmocks. Long live democracy! We, Jane Adams and Marty Wyche, do bequeath our ingenuity to create midnight parties to Jo Cureton and Hannah Walker. Converse College, Spartanburg, S. C., Dear Miss Gee, It's been a long time-five whole years-since the Class of '43 was at dear old Converse. I know it's a hard job for you to keep in touch with all of us, so I've done a little snooping around and will tell you now what I've learned about some of them. You'II remember that we had some rare people in our class. Take Mary Frances Morgan-the smart girl that finished in February. During the war she was an international spy. Now, her ability to seek out the unknown has led her to be an F. B. I. agent. Harriett Bull is her chief assist- ant-that is, when Miss Bull isn't playing. You see, she cultivated her ardent love for music, and is now a violinist in the Cleveland Symphony Orchestra. You should hear some of those high notes she saws out! Do you remember Bettie Vann and Mary Bauman, the eternal movie hounds? Well, they're now co-owners of Roxy Theatre here in New York. Peculiar thing there-the features change three times a day, with triple features on Satugiay. Lib Lyles has money invested there, too, and her profits keep her on the road to Atlanta every week en . After winning all those camp medals, Gene Mears is now director of a summer camp for girls. All work and no play makes plenty of jack! Natalie Jennings is still going to Harvard summer school, just for the fun of it. Yes, she did organize a Lonely Hearts Club there, too. Misses Marshall and Vandiver are now directors of a dancing school. They teach the ballet, the waltz, modern dancing, and of course, the Mississip i Hop! Mary Ruth Cannon Jones has become a horse trainer, and her favorite one, Privileged Character, won the Kentucky Derby this year. She named the horse after a former roommate of hers. During the war, and in the post-war period, Dot France has been director of calisthenics at Camp Croft. The boys are crazy about Funny Bunny. Doady Hyman has been at one particular job since she finished school. She runs a bus line from Spartanburg to Clemson, working eight days a week. The buses, of course, are all red. She gives free rides on the week end. Mrs. John Payne, Jr., came to see me last week end. She's the former Virginia Hengeveld. Mr. Payne is the son of the late John Payne, actor. Henger met John, Jr., in Atlantic City, where she entered the beauty contest for Miss America. After getting her doctor's degree in Biology, Nancy Vaughan went on an expedition to Africa fthe part that even the war dioln't touchl to do research work. Freda Sullivan went along to give artificial respiration. You remember quiet little Eleanor Howard, don't you, Miss Gee? She is now professor of Bible at Chapel Hill. Bob Blackmon has at last obtained her one ambition. She lives in a governor's mansion somewhere in North Carolina. In her spare time she reads medical books. Peggy Hite has a quaint little radio repair shop in Evergreen, ln her spare time she raises petunias. Her father is proud of her just the same. Just look in on any kindergarten these days and you'Il see a portrait of Polly Breeden. She's the leader of them all! She has also adopted ten little orphans. Lieutenant Allison Stone is still with the Ferry Command. She does take leave now and then, and especially when there's a Y conference going on. I might add here that Eleanor Toole, despite that height, is a top sergeant with the Commands. I've been dashing all over New York to see Lucy Geiger. Every time a fire engine passes, I rush out and follow it in hopes that Lucy will be at the scene of disaster to cover the story For New York Times. Well, there we are, Miss Gee. So sorry I couldn't get in touch with the rest of the class. Hope everything is fine with you, Dr. Gwathmey, Dr. Morgan, and the rest of the fine faculty of our college. Best wishes! Sincerely, SARA SPIGENER. P.S. Know you enjoy seeing Vivian Workman each year around picture-taking time. Our tirst days at Converse presented as strange a world to us as we have ever experienced, but, like a snowball rolling down the moun- tainside, we gained momentum and we grew into a smooth, round ball-one that tits into any and everything. We need no introduction on the cam- pus, in the classroom, on the hockey tield, nor to any of the various clubs that Fresh- men are allowed to join, because we have been an active part of all these things. Our laces have been seen through the fumes in the lab, in Spanish books enrapt as a T. Dorsey record is played, crowding into the P. O., smiling gaily at our dances, en- joying Y services, and in the gym cheer- ing our beloved teams to their continuous victories. With the high and mighty Sophsn to help us, our sister class, the Juniors, to guide us, and the tired old Seniors to S g g up an Appetite i ,.. life 57 look after us, we proved ourselves capable in Council, on the Concept and Parley Voo statfs, in classes, and in dra- matics. Also, three issues of We, The Freshmen brought forth much talent For writing. We were mystitied by rat week, and thrilled by all the Christmas festivities at Converse. In the Junior-Freshman Wedding and also in the May Day exercises, our true and outstanding beauty was brought to light. Today, as we look toward the future, we cannot hope to tell what it will bring, nor can we be sure of tornorrovv's educa- tion, but many ot us say now, and will always say, My Fresh- man year at Converse has been the happiest year of my life. Spartanburg, South Carolina ..... .... .Lalfe Forest, Illinois Winston-Salem, North Carolina .St. Matthews, South Carolina Learn while you play -that's the unotticial motto ol the School ol Music. lt ac- tually works, too. Still, when one talces into consideration that in this department play- ing means working, it isn't surprising that an amazing number of really tine musicians have come From the school during the past tive decades. Getting around to the present time, however, and to this year in particular, we tind that things do change, even over the course of one year-and quite a bit! Naturally, the war has attected everything whether directly or otherwise. So it has been that the Music School has lelt itself particularly fortunate in being able to draw upon the vast amount of musical talents and abilities present at Camp Croft. Peggy plays soft and sweet Little KHBCVHPS Dean Ernst Bacon Music appreciation 68 During this past year, under the direction of Acting Dean Gerschefski and the leadership of Mr. Nowak and Mr. Lewis, our regular concert schedule was maintained with even more than its accustomed success. Probably because of the fact that people were forced to stay very near to their homes, they felt an even more urgent desire to hear and to take active parts in the various types of programs we presented. Consequently, the first concert, a joint recital so to speak, by the Spar- tanburg Civic Symphony and the Converse Col- lege Chorus was met with intense interest by a large, enthusiastic audience. Since this was the occasion of the introductions of Mr. Nowak and Mr. Lewis to the Spartanburg public as conductor and chorus master respectively, the audience was there to judge as well as to enjoy. Needless to say, before many minutes had passed, the audi- ence settled back merely for the purpose of en- joying. The press notices were considerably more than just favorable, and so it was that the school felt itself well launched on its new concert season. Not until after the Christmas holidays were plans made for another appearance, this one due Terry Practices Bach Edwin Gerschefski, Acting Dean on the first of March. This concert, of the pop variety, featured the lighter, present-day classics. Using the resources of both the chorus and the orchestra again, such selections from Victor Her- bert's operettas and Porgy and Bessn were pre- sented. This appearance served also as an intro- duction for what is always considered the main event of the season-the annual Spartanburg Music Festival. FESTIVAL Covering a period of three days, this year the Festival featured a night of chamber music, a night of chorus, a night of opera, and a night of symphonic and choral works. The opera chosen was Orfeo and Euridicen by Gluck. With Mrs. Pazmor singing the role of Orfeo, and the entire opera directed by Ernst Bacon, who interrupted his work under a Guggenheim Fellowship for the occasion, the production was judged one of the finest, most perfected ever done here. The other two concerts, of course, were highly rated as ex- cellent examples of good workmanship and mu- sicianship combined. The night of chamber music brought to the front various members of the fac- ulty, who gave effective presentations of various types of chamber music. The orchestral and chorus night was, as usual, a complete success, with Mr. Nowak and Mr. Lewis again leading their groups in fine, professional performances. All these concerts during the year were supple- mented by those sponsored by the Civic Music Association, those presented by our own faculty, and those of the students themselves. So it is that an interesting and successful year has been com- pleted, which leaves us, not gazing backward, but rather, looking to the future, and already making plans for a bigger, better coming season. ELEORD M 'yn ,S and 0-l-l-ll2lQ Y'S,' A college annual is often the only album one has ot her school days, the only record, perhaps, of the most eventful years of her lite. If this edition ot the Y's and Other Y's records the composite picture ot the year in permanent form so that in the Future it may be relived in the minds ot all, we will be justly rewarded. Thus, we present this, your yearboolc, to the student body lor whom it was created. 77 TI-IE I943 PAQLEY VCO The Parley Voo , taking For its motto the phrase, speaking for you and about youu, has attempted to depict the life and growth of Converse in war- time. The news writers have covered the activities both on and ott the cam- pus, the feature writers have added levity, the editorial policy has been one of unbiased presentation of opinion. This, a newspaper of college students, for college students, and by college students, has kept alive the interest and en- thusiasm which stimulates ai spirit ot loyalty to Converse. Because of war conditions, the Farley Voo was changed from a weekly to a bi-monthly publication, but the statt has exerted an unusual etiort to keep the news up-to-the-minute. The business statt has been on its toesi' all year and has inaugurated many new ideas to promote advertising. Sacritices have to be made in times of war, but it is through a newspaper that progress is re- flected and intluenced. The Parley Voon is the mouthpiece of Converse. 78 Editor-in-Chief ...... ......., L LICIA GEIGER Business Manager .... .. .... ........,..... M ARGUERITE SYMMS Managing Editors. . .....
