Setting: The hall is arranged with unusually collapsilnle chairs interminglecl among the statues in preparation lor the annual meeting ot the alumnae, in- cluding those who graduated, those who gave up hope. and those who still have some, ol the class ot '42 The two l'lies are still setting on the wall as the girls come in. lst Fly: Well. woulcln't you linow it? There comes Betsy Latte wearing that new tweed suit made from that hott ol' cloth she had her senior yearl 2nd Fly: And as usual she's the tirst one here. But who's that with her? Oh, yes, theyxre to he in the receiving line. Theres Scotty Dameron with that twenty-year-old tweecl suit leading Betty Chapman's son lay the nose- he's a lreshman at Chapel Hill, you ltnow. 2nd Fly: And tools who's lnouncing in laehind her'-'Alma League and her assistant, Alice Ntoore, Peggy Beattie, Virginia Battle, and Dot Hagoocl. l guess you ltnow they all gave calisthenics to the Army during the war. lst Fly: Speaking ot the war, have Hopie and Mary Lilalzy laeen heard ot since they were camp hostesses? 2nd Fly: No. lout Lalla Lee has. She's over in Germany now still trying to convince the Germans what really line people they are. lst Fly: Alt, here come the husiness successes, Joan Finlilea and Dottie Wayland. They're running a pawn shop supplying traternity pins-the lcind you need when you need them. Etizaheth Crow was their lirst customer, l heard. 2nd Fly: l can tell you right now they're not the only successes. There's our tirst woman governor, Lucy Tison, and there's Virginia's ambassador to the United States, lVlary Wilson Gee. Listen, she's even acquired a northern accent. lst Fly: Well, l just wish yould tools on that platlorm. Theres Josephine lVlcVVhorter, .lo Carolyn Willis, and Patsy Garner Jordon selling ticlcets to the Broolcs rallle tor those tired old seniors. Qnct Fly: Now we're going to have some lun.
