Rice began developing a village named Maurice City, in honor of his daughter Mary Rice, and arranged with George Skinner to plat the town in 1886. Maurice City was incorporated on March 22, 1888, and the name was changed to Continental in 1899. This change marked the beginning of the Continental (Maurice City) Village School District, established legally in 1888. Prior to 1888, the only school district which included Continental was the township sutvdis-trict established by the Township Board of Education. In 1888, a petition was circulated and an election held for the purpose of making a Village District. In 1890, a beautiful brick building was erected by Jacob Spiker and stood on the comer of Fifth and Ash Streets. This building contained twelve rooms housing the Elementary Grades, and Junior and Senior High Schools. In 1910, the old building was improved by an addition to the north wing and further improvement was made in 1923 when the old building was completely remodeled, adding two large Study Halls, three classrooms and an auditorium-gymnasium. On February 9, 1929, shortly before midnight, a Fire was discovered in the school. The Fire started in a paper chute where waste paper was thrown and when they burned the paper, it caught Fire in the chute. Following the fire, school was held in the rooms above Doc's Hardware, in churches, and in empty buildings. The classes were grouped by grades. The juniors and seniors were in a room together, while the freshmen and sophomores had a room to themselves. Each student had a desk, but there were no lockers. There was a cloakroom in the back or near every room. As the building was covered by adequate insurance, the people voted a bond issue of $65,000 and this, together with the insurance, enabled the local board to start erection of a new school building in 1929. Completed in 1930, this new school was made up of 3 floors, and a gym-auditorium combination. !• i s' ■ i t IN THE BEGINNING . . . 2 1. Additions and improvements to the original schoolhouse created quite an impressive building which, unfortunately, was destroyed by fire in 1929. 2. Members of the 1946 CHS band pose proudly in front of the main entrance of the building constructed in 1930. 3. The original twelve room brick school-house which stood on the comer of Fifth and Ash Streets. 4. Even today, the school looks much the same as it did upon completion in 1930. 5. Originally housed in the bell tower of the first school, the bell survived the 1929 fire and was moved to the front lawn of the present building. 6. Painting the bell is a favorite prank for students. Here, Ken Troyer and Dwight Donaldson prepare to honor the Senior class by adding an ’83 to the numerous layers of paint. 3 1. The archway above the front entrance to the school identifies the township in which it stands. 2. Presently housing grades K-3, this building began in 1968 with nine classrooms built due to increasing enrollments. 3. A view of the present band and chorus rooms added on behind the stage in 1940. 4. The 1954 and 1958 additions provided much needed space for the elementary grades and is presently used for grades 4-6 and high school classes. 5. Rhonda Relue and Kevin Coble pose in front of the plaque which commemorates the 1954 addition. 6. Enjoying refreshments at the Snowball Prom are: Mike Cross, Tom Keck. John Schmidt and Duane Donaldson. 7. These rooms added in 1972 provided needed space for the existing elementary building. 8. Also added to the high school in 1972 were a cafeteria and gymnasium with a seating capacity of 1800. In 1940, an addition to the existing building was completed. This addition consisted of two rooms behind the auditorium stage, which are now used for music and band. Two other additions were completed in 1954 and 1958 adding a new cafeteria, many elementary classrooms, restrooms and a room which is now used as a library. In 1976, enrollment increased to the point where another building was needed. A nine room Elementary building was finished in 1968. The last addition, in 1972, included a five room addition to the Elementary building, and a gymnasium and cafeteria in the High School. 5 Seniors Memory Sadie Hawkins Happenings Cross Country Volleyball Golf Student Council Honor Society FHA FFA Yearbook Newspaper Vantage Windows « v 1 SENIOR CLASS OFFICERS Front L to R: Diane Kesler, Presi dent; Kim Louiselle, Secretary. Brad Etter, Gary Louiselle and Jeff Ford paced the Pirates throughout the year, with Mike Cross and Terry Relue completing the top 5 in scoring. Brenda Winkle and Denise Turner paced the girls by advancing to the District Meet in Lima. Both qualified running as individuals in the Defiance Sectional Meet. Front Row L to R: Jeff Ford. A total of 16 Seniors and 24 Juniors represented Continental High School in the Industrial, Automotive, Business, Food Management, Child Development, Carpentry, and Cosmetology Programs. NEW WINDOWS In order to lower heating bills and to save energy, the Continental Local Schools began a window replacement program in the fall of 1983. Funds for the project were obtained from a Federal Energy Grant and the permanent improvement fund. Windows in the auditorium were completely closed in, while those around the music rooms and the south end of the High School were closed in on the top portion and new aluminum windows were installed in the bottom. Replacement of the windows was done by Mel Lanzer Construction of Napoleon. Windows on the west side (Front) of the High School will be replaced during the summer of 83, gving the High School building an entirely new look! As the colorful, crisp days of Fall turn into the bareness and chill of Winter, we plunge into the thick of the school year. Having renewed friendships, joined groups and activities, and relearned forgotten study skills, we look forward to the various activities and events that Winter brings. win i nrc 44 Administration Faculty Staff Underclassmen Snowball Prom Homecoming Happenings Basketball Computer 1. Four of the computers are Atari 400s for the elementary and two are Atari 800s for the high school. The school plans to add more computers in the future and start a class where, ideally, there will be one computer for every several students. This class will teach students simple computer programming and familiarize students with computers. 84 As the stillness of Winter blossoms into the freshness and vitality of Spring, we move towards the end of the school year. We feel a sense of satisfaction in reaching our goals as the Seniors have graduated and the underclassmen and elementary have advanced to another grade. 143 EDITOR — Diane Kesler COEDITOR — Tonya Stover PHOTOGRAPHY EDITOR — Barb Barnhart BUSINESS EDITOR — Jill Hornung ADVISOR — Miss Jenny VonderEmbse In this years' book, we tried to present the exciting moments of the school year. We would like to thank our advisor, Miss V for all of the hard work and dedication put towards this yearbook. We couldn't have done it without her. We would also like to thank all the businesses that supported us; without them we wouldn't have this yearbook. This yearbook will mean a lot to the Seniors. In years ahead we can look back and it will remind us of all our friends and the good times that we shared. We hope you enjoy this yearbook, as the members of the yearbook staff have put a lot of hard work towards it.
