The head of the household, Beatrice, is a bitter, hateful widow who supports herself and her two daughters by taking in boarders. The latest of these boarders is Papa, a deaf, nearly crippled old man. Her daughter Tillie is a quiet girl with a genius for science. Tillie's sister, Ruth, is recovering from a nervous breakdown. Beatrice is doing everything she can to keep Tillie from attending school. Tillie’s latest project is growing marigolds exposed to deadly gamma rays, a project which has earned her a place as finalist in the science fair. Her biggest competitor is John Vickery with his boiled cat. Beatrice finally admits that for once in her life, she’s a little bit proud, but she still refuses to attend the science fair. In the end, though, Tillie is still optimistic - proof that just like the marigolds, something good CAN come from something so destructive. The play was under the direction of Mrs. Candace Lauefer. Beatrice - Cathy Barton Matillda - Mary Speiser 79 On October 28, the Juniors sponsored a Halloween Dance which was held in the old high school gym. The ”Country Cavaliers’ ’ provided the music. The Pirate Chapter of the National Honor Society had its annual induction ceremony in the auditorium of the high school Friday afternoon, April 2, 1976. This was the fifteenth such ceremony for the Chapter. They inducted twenty-one new members. 81 l4o Heco MX ijg THE COURT: BACK ROW: Senior Attendants Jim Schmidt, Lou Ann Carder, Steve Donaldson, Robin Mansfield, King Wayne Schulte, Queen Rhonda Shaffer, Dan Recker, Marilyn Wagner, Jeff Hiltner, Peggy Burke. Defiance, Ohio Ottawa, Ohio You’ve come to the end of the ’76 PIRATE; and we’ve come to the end of the year. Our last page is finished, our last-minute changes have been made. We owe sincere thanks to many people, to name them all would be impossible. A very special thanks goes to Mrs. Connie Konst, our advisor. We would also like to mention Powell Studios and our staff photographers, Greg Simon, Robin Rau, George Jorrey, and Jerry Mansfield, who devoted much time and effort. The '76 PIRATE is the work of the entire staff, and we are all proud of it. We hope you enjoy the memories it brings to mind. Cheryl Prowant Marilyn Wagner 152 We Celebrate the Past in the spirit of seventy-six There was an enormous force which strengthened the colonies, which exists today, and which has carried America through its great history. That force is know n to us all to be the Spirit of ’76.” It is a SPIRIT OF LIBERTY and the knowledge that one man’s freedom is more important than anything else on earth. It is the SPIRIT OF OPTIMISM of knowing that we can always make things better — of working only for the best, and expecting only the best. It is the SPIRIT OF FRONTIER — of not fearing to o where man has not reached. George Washington Alexander Hamilton James .Madison John Hancock Ii is the SPIRIT OF INDIV1DIALISM — acknowledging a birthright of opportunity and freedom drawn from the strength of our fathers. Indeed the SPIRIT OF ’76” was, and is, many tilings, eaeh of which has been a building bloek of our national greatness. Our country grew' on that spirit and prospered on that spirit. When all else fails it is that spirit that will be there to guide us and keep us strong. .£Z X r ‘ fir mi c Mm ■ - J ?- fS El fEP1 9 - ifc j « ft.ia A ttjj II ■ x I _ .
