Irving Weller has served the school and education field for 29 years. First as a science teacher, then as a principal and then again as a teacher. Parents and students will long remember his contributions to our school. Jeff McKibben served the school for 12 years as custodian and janitor. His friendly smile, hard work and ever-conscious effort to make our school have a friendly atmosphere was probably his greatest accomplishment and what he will be remembered for. We the staff of the 1972 Pirate want to express our thanks for their years of service, and wish them the best of luck in the future. This year the seniors proved that studying isn't all there is to do in school. Some student in their spare time liked to daydream and sleep, others were active in clubs and organizations. By thinking of things to do in their spare time, causing trouble was only in the minds of a few. Activities made the seniors last year of school go a lot faster. The play based on the noval by Lloyd C. Douglass, centers on Christ's robe and those affected by it. Ed Perry, playing the part of Marcellus, wins the robe with the throw of the dice. As the play progresses. Marcellus travels to Greece where he is converted. He is sent by the emperor Tiberius, Mike Bechtel, to the Holy Land to investigate Jesus. There he meets Simon Peter, Greg Spitnale, and Stephanos, Rick Jones. Before the day ends, Stephanos is killed. Before he returns to report his finds, he marries Diana Gallus, Pam Meyers. They return together only to find that Marcellus' slave, Demetrius, Tom Rue, has been wounded by the Roman soldiers. Simon Peter saves Demetrius from death. Marcellus is then tried at a banquet of Caligula, John Ball, and is sentenced to death. As the play ends, Marcellus and Diana are led to the archery field to be killed for being Christians. The play was only the second production in the history of the school where both faculty and students had leading parts, and was only the second dramatic production ever given. The first being The Blackboard Jungle , also produced by Mr. Buehrer. Special stage effects were produced under the direction of Ed Perry and Don Stevens, who also played Pontius Pilate. 76 Present “The Robe” The Cast Stephanos . . . , Sarah........... Melas........... Annual Prom a Success On January 8, National Honor Society's Snowball Prom was held, with Three Dimensions as the theme. The Honor Society worked very hard at making the prom a success. The 1972 King and Queen were Eugene Recker and Pam Groff. The court consisted of Jayne Shalter, Steve Brinkman, Cindy Troyer, and Frank Tegenkamp. Crownbearers were Diane Kesler and William Shawver. Both are in first grade. Mr. Buehrer served as Master of Ceremonies, and Al Best and his band provided the music. 80 81 Gay Paree Visited During Prom Gay Paree was chosen as the theme of the 1972 Junior-Senior Prom, held May 6th. The crowning of the queen, Pam Groff, and the king, Frank Tegenkamp was the highlight of the evening. It was the first such crowning. Sixty-five juniors decorated the cafeteria and gym with awnings and tables to give the street scene effect. A buffet dinner during the dance was also an innovation. The program was held during the band's intermission. From 2:00 to 4:00 the faculty and students could either bowl or come to the school for ping-pong, cards, or dancing. At 4:00 a.m. there was a movie held at the school called Lilies of the Field . Breakfast ended the enjoyable evening. 83 Hardballers Advance to Regional 85 87 Pirates Swish Their Way to State Row one, left to right: Don Brown, Larry Jones, Bob Searfoss, Jim Troyer, Frank Tegenkamp, Greg Spitnale, Ron Winkle, Ron Weisenburger, Chris Britsch, Tom Rue, Doug Simon, Terry Bragg. Row two: Assistant Coach, Dennis Potts; managers. Junior Dockery, Alan Smith; Head Coach, Donnie Huber. Replacing five seniors and winning was a task in itself for Donnie Huber, first year head coach at C.H.S., but going to the State Tournament and being a participant was almost asking too much. But that's exactly what this year's Pirates did. They had plenty of help from all the fans who were convincing them they could do the job. The team was good at the beginning of the year reeling off five straight victories, but by the end of the season they were terrific. The team was looked upon as good and teams' hopes were vested in beating the Pirates first for the league title, then in tournaments. Three teams got their wishes, but the Pirates ended with an excellent record. 73 Conti VS Tinora 59 Sectional Tournament 73 Conti vs Allen East 58 Continental 84 79 Conti vs Paulding 56 Ft. After a late start because of basketball, the C.H.S. hardballers set records that were a bit of a surprise to everyone. After starting with a dismal 1-5 mark, the Pirates ended in being the first team from Putnam County to ever compete in Regional Tournament. They shared first place in the county with Columbus Grove and Ottoville, with a 3-2 record. The overall mark was 18-7. The tournament games stirred up some excitement, they started off by beating Columbus Grove, 7-5 in Sectionals. They advanced to district play and had victories over Lincolnview, 5-1, and Spencerville, 6-4. Finally in Regional Tournament they beat Fostoria 12 to 5 but were defeated by South Central 2 to 1. Larry Jones was selected as first team All State, the first Continental baseball player to receive such honors, and he also participated in the All-Star Game in Columbus. It was Steve Moor's best season ever as head coach and the future looks bright for teams of the next few years. Under the direction of head coach, Dennis Potts, the Pirates started practice early in September and finished the season early in November. They participated in the county meet, district meet, and the Defiance Invitational. Greg Spitnale, sophomore, was the leading point getter this season and Coach Potts has high hopes for him in the future. Continental High School was represented in the State Basketball Tournament at St. John's Arena, in Columbus. The Pirates of C.H.S. won a total of six exciting tournament games in order to make the trip to Columbus. The Pirates won the Sectional Championship by defeating Ft. Jennings 84-64 and Miller City 65-63. This championship gave Continental the right to advance to the District Tournament at Bath High School. Lady Luck plays a part in every team going to the State tournament. Continental's came at the hands of an unfortunate Lincolnview team in the opening round of district tournament play. Four days prior to the games, two of Lincolnview's starters were in a serious automobile accident. The Bucs took advantage of the break and pulled out a squeaker 62-57. Coming from behind was becoming part of Continental's strategy as they prepared to face the rugged Ottoville Big Green in the District Championship. Ottoville jumped to a 15-13 first quarter lead and exploded for 27 points in the second eight minutes to take a 42-32 lead at the halfway mark. Coach Huber changed his defense and the Pirates exploded for 29 points in the third period to take the lead 61-56. Midway in the fourth period the scoreboard tightened again when the Big Green took the lead 70-69 on a pair of charity tosses. By the time 1:05 remained in the contest, Ottoville fans were beginning to feel the win. Terry Bragg broke the ice by converting a steal into two points and after a fifteen footer by Greg Spitnale the game had tightened to 76-75, Ottoville. With 17 seconds left Ottoville committed a charging foul and Don Brown quickly canned a four footer to put the Pirates on top with 10 seconds remaining. Brown added another free throw and the Bucs had earned the right to travel to the Regional by defeating the Putnam County League champions, 78-76. A tenacious full-court press and pressure playing by Terry Bragg lifted the so-called Cinderella Pirates into the state tournament with Northwestern Regional victories over Mansfield St. Peter and undefeated Hardin Northern. The Pirates defeated St. Peter 70-66 and Hardin Northern by the score of 89-87. The time had come for a showdown. Continental had found revenge for all of their losses except one, their first loss of the season in December of the Ridgedale Rockets. They were going to have their chance. Ridgedale's Rockets were one of but five teams to defeat the Pirates during the regular season, and sank their teeth into the Pirates for a second time in the Class A State Semifinals in St. John's Arean, 74-70. There was no shame, only disappointment by the Continental crew. The game ended the most exciting season in Continental basketball annals, and with the youth of the team (five graduating seniors and a reserve team that hosted a 14-2 season), the Pirates proved they will have to be reckoned with the next few years. 100 103 Miss Juanita Cassidy is the librarian for grades one through three. She has been in the new school for three years doing the library work and helping the teachers out. The librarian serves many purposes for the teachers and the students. There are filmstrips and records to help the children learn. There are magazines for the teachers to look at on their time. The library is also like a study hall for the children to take tests in for make-up work or to finish their homework. The classes take turns going to the library on different days. Usually six to eight children go at a time. The library is a very successful place. Librarian and First Graders Keep Busy Front row. left to right: Dorothy Lininger, Cynthia Sterling. Row two: Paula Williams. Elizabeth Hamburger. Not only do the high school students keep themselves busy throughout the year, but go all the way back to the first graders and you will find out that they too keep themselves quite busy. This year the first graders did a number of things which include going on Franke Park Zoo in Ft. Wayne, Indiana. They also gave flowers to their Mothers for Mother's Day. In December the children presented an operetta to the elementary classes, and to the teachers. The operetta was also presented to the public. One first grade class presented a Valentine play to the other primary classes entitled Where the Wild Things Are . 104 Grade Three Left to right: Florence Sheeks, Barbara Streicher, and Pat Spitnale. Grade Two The third grade under the direction of Florence Sheeks, Barbara Streicher, and Pat Spitnale had a busy year. Besides learning to borrow, carry, multiply and divide, the third grade also participated in the Christmas operetta. The highlight of the year was the time the class sold seeds. They earned enough money to take a trip to the Toledo Zoo. On the way home they stopped at McDonalds. The extra money was spent buying a record player and favorite records for the class. The second grade under the direction of Cheryl Watchorn, Marjorie Wing and Carolyn Krabrill took a trip to the Maumee Recreational Center to see Children's Wonderland. They also saw Christmas Around the World at the Toledo Zoo. The second graders studied the stars and planets. The second grade along with everyone else had a very busy year. 105 Left to right: Cheryl Watchorn, Carolyn Krabrill, and Marjorie Wing. Grade 4 Ruth Simon, David Wirt, Helen Spitnate. 106 The Continental Intermediate had a very busy year putting on two operettas, the first during the Christmas season and the second in the spring. The fourth grade added to the calendar when Karen Donaldson, Linda Laverty, Patty Manchester, and Linda Witteborg took their students to Oak Openings, a natural park near Toledo. The fifth grade teachers, Irene Agner, Cheryl Anderson, and Gale Finney took their students on a county approved conservation trip which cosisted of several stops around the county at parks with a speaker talking about the area. Helen Spitnale, Ruth Simon, and David Wirt took the sixth grade to the Toledo Museum of Art. Mr. Wirt also sponsored a Roman Banquet late in March. 107 Henrietta Henderson, Katie Martin Mrs. Spitnale, Room 111 Mary Lou Beverly Joyce Bibler Hattie Dawson Debbie Decker John DeSota Laura DeSota
