Captain William C. Carlson was born in Detroit, Michigan in Febru- ary I937 and attended Detroit pub- lic schools graduating from Edwin Denby High School in January I955. He graduated with a Bachelor of Science Degree in Education and was commissioned through the regular NROTC program at the Uni- versity of New Mexico in I959. He subsequently attained the rank of captain I January I98O. He was initially assigned to USS AGERHOLM CDD-8263, where he served as ASW Officer and then Weapons Officer. In I962 he was assigned to U.S. Naval Postgradu- ate School in Monterey, California, where he graduated in I965 with a Master of Science Degree in Un- derwater Physics. ln I965 he was assigned as Commanding Officer of USS WHITE RIVER CLSMR-5365. where he served until February i968 during which time WHITE RIV- ER received two Navy Unit Com- mendations for her performance during five gunline tours off the coast of the Republic of Vietnam. CHIEF OF STAFF CCG- In I968, Captain Carlson was as- signed to the staff of Commander Antisubmarine Warfare Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet as ASW Weapons Of- ficer where he remained through I97O when he was assigned as Ex- ecutive Officer, USS GOLDSBOR- OUGH CDDG-205. He served in GOLDSBOROUGH until December I972 when he was ordered to com- mand of USS SAMPLE CDE-I048D, where he served until July I974. He attended the Naval War Col- lege in Newport, Rhode Island graduating with highest distinction in July I975. Following War College. Captain Carlson' was assigned as Director, Sensors Division, Anti- submarine Warfare Systems Pro- ject Office in Washington where he remained until June l978. He re- ported to the staff of Commander Carrier Group SEVEN where he served as Surface Operations Offi- cer until February l98O and then as Chief of Staff. Captain Carlson's awards in- clude two awards of the Bronze Star with Combat V , the Merito- CAPTAIN WILLIAM C. CARLSON rious Service Medal, the Navy Commendation Medal, the Combat Action Ribbon, Two awards of the Navy Unit Commendation Ribbon, two awards of the Meritorious Unit Commendation Ribbon, Navy Expe- ditionary Medal, National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal with seven campaign stars, the Sea Service Deployment Rib- bon, the Vietnamese Navy Distin- guished Service Order Ond Classj, two awards of the Vietnamese Cross of Gallantry with Silver Star, the Vietnamese Meritorious Unit Citation QGallantry Cross Colorj, and the Republic of Vietnam Cam- paign Medal. Captain Carlson is married to the former Jane Elder of Albuquerque, New Mexico. They have three chil- dren, David, Scott and Jennifer. The Carlsons reside in quarters on Yerba Buena Island in San Francisco Bay. David is a Midshipman at U.S. Merchant Marine Academy in Kings Point, New York. Aitcheson fdeceasedj and Mary McKay Aitcheson of Warren, Ohio. Rear Admiral Aitcheson entered the U.S. Navy as a Naval Aviation Cadet following graduation from the University of Pittsburg in June I952. Upon completion of flight training in December l953 and ap- pointment as an Ensign, he attend- ed the jet transition course at NAS, Kingsville, Texas. After completion, he reported to VF-l92, deploying to WESTPAC aboard the USS ORIS- KANY. Following this tour, he re- ported to the Fleet ALL Weather Training Unit, Pacific as a flight in- structor. In I958 he reported to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School, Patuxent River, Maryland as a student, and following his graduation in June I959. he was assigned to Weapons Systems Test as a project 'test pi- lot. He then reported to VF-l4l, later designated VF-53, where he completed WESTPAC deployments aboard the USS CONSTELLATION. He then served temporarily as I8 CCG 7 G3 6 7575 G3I'l'l ml' 3,70 596 55 I? mr- O Z flight instructor at VF-I24 prior to attending the U.S. Naval War Col- lege, Newport, Rhode Island. While there, he received his Master's De- gree from George Washington Uni- versity in International Relations. He returned to the U.S. Naval Test Pilot School in July l965 for duty as an instructor. From August I967 to January I969, he served aboard the USS IN- TREPID as Aircraft Handling Offi- cer, making two deployments to Southeast Asia. He reported to VF- I9I in June l969 as Executive Offi- cer, assuming command in May I97O. Following two deployments to Southeast Asia aboard the USS ORISKANY, Rear Admiral Aitcheson reported to the U.S. Army War Col- lege, Carlisle Barracks, Pennsylva- nia in July l972. He assumed com- mand of attack Carrier Air Wing FIFTEEN in February I973 and de- ployed to the Pacific aboard USS CORAL SEA. He then reported to the Staff, Commander Naval Air Force, U.S. Pacific Fleet in March l974. He assumed command of the USS SACRAMENTO in March I975 and made one deployment to the Western Pacific and Indian Ocean. Prior to reporting to USS CORAL SEA, he attended the Senior Offi- cer's Ship Material Readiness Course at Idaho Falls, Idaho. Rear Admiral Aitcheson assumed command of the USS CORAL SEA on I March I977, making one de- ployment to WESTPAC. He report- ed to Staff, Commander in Chief Pacific in June I978 as Chief of Cur- rent Operations. He then reported to the Staff, Commander in Chief U.S. Pacific FLEET in September l979 as Deputy Chief of Staff for ManagementfFIeet Inspector Gen- eral, where he served prior to his present assignment as Command- er, Carrier Group SEVEN. His decorations include the De- fense Superior Service Medal, Le- gion of Merit, Meritorious Service Medal, Bronze Star, Air Medals and Navy Commendation Medals. Rear Admiral Aitcheson is mar- ried to the former Claudia Pringle of Oakland. California, and they have three children: Jay, Kent, and Carol.
