During the trip across the Pacific, the old hands aboard prepared the newcomers for the work ahead. As a result, all hands Were ready to meet Whatever obstacles might arise upon the ship's arrival in Korean waters. The Consolation arrived in lnchon Harbor at a most opportune time. Another big Com- munist offensive was underway. During the first four days, the doctors, nurses and corps- men worked around the clock, getting as little as eight hours sleep for the entire four day period. ln one 24 hour period, as many as 62 helicopters were landed on the small 60' x 60' flight deck located on the ship's fantail. The mobility of a floating hospital ship plus the use of helicopters enables a casualty to receive comprehensive medical attention Within minutes after being wounded. No one can say exactly how many lives have been saved by this new and extraordinary method of casualty evacuation, but many critically wounded pa- tients would not have lived without the prompt treatment now available. After serving for ten months on this, her third trip to Korea, the Consolation was ora dered back to the States. On the trip home, all hands felt confident that they had contri- buted substantially to the United Nations ef- fort, for during that ten months stay overseas. the Consolation had cared for 3635 United Nations service personnel and civilians. Since the outbreak of Korean hostilities in Iune, 1950, the Consolation has served 31 months in Far Eastern waters and has cared for a grand to- tal of 18,433 patients.
