(J ons io nocJten JfigA cScAoo 1966 Where have all the hours gone, Long time passing. Where have all the days gone, Long time ago Where have all the years gone, Filled with memories everyone. Memories of learning, fun, and toil, --Dear Alma Mater we'll always be loyal. These were the treasures, This is the prize: Memories that ECHO throughout our lives . . . M. McClure L. Whitley F. Mordes P. Dugas It is interesting to know that The Old School was located on the hill at Second Avenue and Fayette Street, extending back to Forrest Street. It was a four room building. In the center of the rooms was a big stove and the big benches were in use. It was considered a privilege and honor for the boys and girls to sit on these benches. The Conshohocken Borough Charter was approved May 15, 1850, and the School District was organized at the same time. The first election was on the third Friday of May 1850. There were six directors elected; two for one year, two for two years, two for three years; then two directors annually thereafter. Later when the town grew larger, fifteen directors were on the wuard. The Schools developed rapidly and in 1864 the Board of Directors elected a Principal of Schools. Reuben F. Hoffecker was chosen, and he organized the Conshohocken Public Schools into a system. He was the Pioneer educator of the Borough. In 1869, the Third Avenue Grammar School, now known as the ’Hoffecker Building was erected. The High School and grades were in the Hoffecker Building. Professor Hoffecker served as Principal of the Conshohocken School until 1878 when he was elected County Superintendent of Schools. J. W. Schlichter was then elected Principal of Schools. In 1885 the Harry Street Building was erected to accommodate the children of the growing school. This building consisted of eight rooms, and the old school house on the hill was abandoned. J. Addison Jones succeeded Mr. Schlichter and served one year. Mr. Jones was succeeded by the late John Harley who served until 1892. He was succeeded by J. Horace Landis, who was principal until 1896 when he was elected superintendent of Borough Schools, being the first to hold that office, in 1904. Mr. Landis resigned to accept the position of county superintendent of schools to succeed Reuben Hoffecker, resigned. An addition of six rooms was built to the Harry Street School in 1904 in order to provide larger quarters. The Manual Training Building was erected in 1898 for the introduction of Vocational Education in the schools. E. B. Ziegler was elected Superintendent in 1904 and served until 1911. He strengthened the academic condition throughout the entire system. In 1911-1915, Frank Cloud, Ph. D., a Conshohocken boy and a graduate of his home town Schools was elected Superintendent of Schools after serving as High School Principal for four years. In his administration the present high school building at seventh Avenue and Fayette Street was erected for secondary education. The Hoffecker and Harry Street Buildings were given over to elementary educational purposes. In 1915 to 1918, A. M. Weaver was elected Superintendent of Schools and he introduced Departmental Instruction and organized the school system to a high academic degree. Paul Y. Eckert was then elected Superintendent of Schools and served from 1918 to 1920. He developed Departmental Work and advanced the High School curriculum. In 1920 Charles S. Hottenstein was elected, acting Superintendent of Schools for two years, after serving as High School Principal for one year. In 1922 he was elected Superintendent of Schools for a full term of four years. 2 In the spring of 1922 the Blue and Gold, Con-shohocken’s official school newspaper was established. The Home and School Association was organized in November 1922. The first regular meeting was held in December 1923. There were about 300 persons present. In 1923 an annex of fourteen rooms was built to the high school at Seventh and Fayette Streets for a Junior High School at the cost of $150,000. On the morning of May 11, 1923 the Harry Street Building was burned to the ground. The district erected a modern school building on the site and added two additional rooms to the building. The Principals of the High School from the time Professor Horace Landis was elected Superintendent of Schools are as follows: Caroline Niblo . . . . 1896-1908 Frank Cloud .... . 1908-1912 Irvin Noll . 1912-1915 L. Landis. . . 1926-1956 Edward W. Oermann . 1956-1966 In 1938 M. Edmonds Dunlap was selected as the architect who would build the new annex to tfie present ConshohockenHigh School. The cost of the annex was $134,292.62 which was $20,000 over the expected price. On March 8, 1939 the chemistry and biological laboratories were ready for use by the students. Due to a complication that occurred after the completion of the annex the dedication did not take place until September 10. The principal address was delivered by Dr. Lester K. Olde, his subject: ’’Modern Facilities for the Secondary School”. Harry E. Fox, an associate of Mr. Dunlap made the presentation of the annex. Since the completion of the annex in 1938, there has been no additions, and Conshohocken High School has remained unchanged. Since the old must make way for the new, it has now been decided by our state government that the reorganization and re-districting of schools must take place for the betterment of the student in order to give him a more comprehensive education the school districts of Conshohocken, Plymouth and Whitemarsh will merge into the newly formed school district, namely; the Colonial School District. This new district has been in effect since July 1, 1966. We know that thousands of students have graduated from Conshohocken High School and because of them we know that even though this school is no longer in existence it will always have a place in our hearts. EDUCATIONAL PHILOSOPHY OF 1871 CONSHOHOCKEN JUNIOR - SENIOR HIGH SCHOOL 1966 The members of the faculty of the Conshohocken Junior-Senior High School cognizent of the responsibility which rests on them as teachers of the youth of the town, and realizing their duty toward parents and all adults of the borough herein record their educational philosophy. Recognizing the public school system as a democratic institution for reaching in its effects upon the community, state and nation, the faculty is aware that it is within its realm to assist in the molding of young characters and to equip the children enrolled in their classes with the means of becoming worthy citizens. With these thoughts before them they cite their aims as follows: To develop a sense of right and wrong in matters pertaining to God and Country. To demonstrate a belief in the equality of all mankind by upholding the principles of freedom and tolerance. To instill a respect for the rights of others by promoting proper association with administrators, faculty and schoolmates and to provide the climate for this field with field trips and other extra-curricular activities. To prepare academic students to progress confidently to higher levels of learning. To supply an adequate knowledge of trade and industry to those enrolled in practical arts courses. To develop competence and assurance in those who plan to enter the business world. To open avenues to appreciation, enjoyment and creation of beauty, expression and leisure activities. To build healthy bodies and minds, producing thereby a wholesome attitude toward oneself and others. To develop an understanding of and a proper attitude toward the processes of physical development. To develop an appreciation of the family unit and prepare for the acceptance of future responsibilities. To stimulate young minds to proper analysis and independent choice in problems of living and government. To furnish a basic understanding of the sciences as they pertain to the universe. To bring about an awareness of history as it pertains to our cultural heritages and to develop an understanding of local, state and national governments and international relationships. To assist in the formation of a well-balanced concept of culture, refinement, and socially acceptable behavior. To maintain a library adequate to provide students with materials and services necessary to meet and stimulate the interests, appreciations and curiosities of youth. Motivated by the ethics of their profession, the faculty will strive in conjunction with home, church, and community, to perform these duties which are specifically theirs. They will support a curriculum geared to the development and adjustment of each individual to a desirable environment. Oecftcaiion Among the most valuable gifts a person can receive from another are guidance, understanding, loyalty and the inspiration which helps him set goals and strive to better himself. Mr. Edward W. Oermann, during his past years at Conshohocken High School, has not only bestowed these fine gifts upon us, the Class of 1966; but also upon many others who have come before us. Therefore, dedication of our yearbook, the final yearbook of Conshohocken High School, is made to you Mr. Oermann, in deepest appreciation for your unceasing devotion and unselfishness to our school. 5 ( ontents t Administration and dacuftij c S uperiniencfeni Edward W. Oermann Edward W. Oermann was born in York, Pennsylvania. He was graduated from York High School in the spring of 1918. He then entered Pennsylvania State University, where he met his wife, Mildred. In the spring of 1923 he received his bachelor of Science Degree from Pennsylvania State University, in Business Education. In 1937 he received his Masters Degree in Education from Temple University. He also received graduate credit, beyond his masters degree, from Temple University and Harvard University. In 1926 he accepted his first teaching position at Conshohocken High School. His first position entailed the teaching of bookkeeping, accounting, and English. At Conshohocken he soon became involved with the extra-curricular life of an educator. He undertook the staggering job of being a class advisor and the challenging job of Dramatics Coach. Within six months after accepting the position at Conshohocken High School, Edward Oermann was asked to accept the principalship at Conshohocken High School. And so, working in the supervisory capacity to graduating classes, next the principalship and finally in 1956 he became Superintendent of the Conshohocken School District. Mr. Oermann, as we all know him, plays an active role in the school life at Conshohocken High School. In the early part of the school year you will find him planning student schedules and handing out rosters, at Christmas time he joins his faculty and student body in the singing of Christmas carols; and as the school year closes for the seniors you will find Mr. Oermann measuring each and every senior student for his cap and gown. When a student reporter asked him what he felt was the most prominent problem of the top administrator of a secondary school he replied; The student-teacher relationship . He said, The superintendent must realize that both teachers and students have problems. It is up to the superintendent to develop a closer and proper attitude toward the student and the teacher. So as one can see from only this short biography Mr. Edward Oermann takes a personal interest in the students and does not leave all the work up to the teachers. But, now after being at ConshohockenHigh School for 41 years he will retire July 1, 1966. After retiring, he plans to probably do some substituting, take care of his property and do some traveling with his wife. We are sure that Conshohocken High School will always hold a special place in his memory and thoughts. Aden 00 Jioarcf disciplinarian Raymond N. Weaver FRONT TO BACK; Winfield S. In witness whereof we have hereunto subscribed our name and set our seal in the year of Our Lord, One Thousand Nine Hundred and Sixty-Six. ( ' ass Jfistorij Six years ago, we, the graduating class of 1966, didn't know or even conjecture about what was to happen to us this June, 1966. Neither did we dream that we would be the last graduating class of Conshohocken High School. Since the beginning of our secondary education at Con-shohocken High School, numerous events have taken place to make the years short. In our Sophomore year, when we first organized as a class, Mr. David Sera was appointed as our class advisor. Under his leadership the class sold assorted candies to boost our new bank account. Later on our Sophomore Hop was presented at the Fellowship House. No one will ever forget our authentic 'French Sidewalk’ atmosphere. Just before school closed that year for Summer vacation, the class took a trip to the beautiful Longwood Gardens. As Juniors we became the proud owners of new class rings. We also expanded our sales program selling assorted household articles to subsidize our growing economy. Naturally our scholarly pursuits were our primary concern and when final examinations were over, we were proud of our new status; we were Seniors! As Seniors we started the new year right by selling magazine subscriptions to further increase our growing bank account. Although no one won the grand prize for salesmanship, (a trip to anywhere in the United States;) we all enjoyed the lesser Hershey bar prizes. By now the merger was a certainty and as mementos of our school year, the Seniors bought CHS pins. Early this Spring the class bade a sad farewell to Mr. Sera, our class advisor who had decided to leave the field of teaching. Miss Catherine Higgins and Miss Ethylene Erb graciously accepted the task of class advisors when Mr. Sera left. After all the receipts for our sales drives were tallied, it was found that the class still needed more money. Therefore we decided to sell commemorative plates featuring the facade of the high school expertly drawn by Miss Erb. All of us will doubtless keep the plates stashed away in hopes that they will become valuable antiques someday. Time rolled on and the Senior Prom on May 13 was upon us. Because we were soon to graduate and leave the high school, we chose Bon Voyage as our theme since it characterized our unique position as the last class to graduate from Conshohocken High School. A week later on May 20, the Senior Play, UP TO YOUR EARS was produced under the direction of Miss Higgins. Will anyone ever forget how the lovesick taxi driver stole the bride at the last moment ? ? Only a few more days remained before graduation and everyone seemed to be 'up to his ears' in all that attends graduation. After Senior examinations were over all thoughts turned towards Class Day, June 2, Baccalaureate Service, June 5, and finally Commencement, June 8. After the final Commencement exercises on June 8, 1966, let all these things be recorded as the history of the Conshohocken High School Senior class of 1966. We shall take diverging paths--but let us ever recall fondly all that we shared together as we travel the road to maturity, looking ever onward towards the future. 41 C ass J ropfiecij — ( ass of 1966 After five years of diligent social work in the Appalachian Poverty Region, I was fortunate to be transferred to our headquarters in my home town of Con-shohocken. Sitting in the jet that was to carry me homeward, I noticed a familiar face. The stewardess who was instructing passengers in the use of the parachute was none other than MARIAN McCLURE. When she stopped by my seat, I had my chance to renew acquaintance. Since this was my first flight on a super-powered jet, I asked whether she thought these parachutes really were necessary. She said that they were since our pilot was none other than duce MIKE DURANTE (not quite an ace). On further inquiry, 1 learned that most of my classmates were still residing in the Conshohocken area. When we finally landed (yes, we made it safely), the first place that I wanted to investigate was the old high school building. I discovered with real surprise, that it had been transformed into the ED RAMEY a Go-Go Club. Many of my classmates were connected in some way with this swinging club. Their charming head go-go dancer CAROL SMITH, introduced me to their regular staff of dancers, whom I remembered as: EYDIE KOHANSBY, COOKIE ZIELINSKI, and MAGGIE BULGER, and the hostesses, BARBARA BARANSK3, PHYLLIS DUGAS, and ARLENE SZYMANSKI. As I entered the dining area, I found Ensign EDWARD RICCI of the U.S. Navy being escorted to a front table by the maitr’e of the hotel VICTOR BENEDICT. I was then greeted by ED RAMEY, the proprietor, who urged me to stay for the stage show featuring that hilarious comedy team of Sinnk and Yac, (LARRY SINNK BOB YACOVELLI). Also the newest and noisiest rock and roll group, The Roaches, starring CHRIS BOCK-RATH on lead guitar, JOHN RUE BEN at the organ, WALTER AULT on the trumpet, RICHARD ANDRAKA and his mad accordion, and LOUIS MARCOZZI, on the drums. I declined the offer because I was rather exhausted from my long trip. As I was speeding toward home, I was stopped by police chief, WILLIAM WARD, who gave me a ticket, two as a matter of fact, to the Policeman's Ball. When I arrived home, I picked up the morning newspaper, The Back Fence Gossiper, to find that participating in the Olympics this year was that talented husband and wife team, VIC AND CONNIE FISHER, (the former CONNIE HOWELL). Designing the next Mercury Rocke to the Moon, was EDWIN STELLFOX. I was not surprised because I knew he always had ability as an engineer, but I was actually shocked to find that the astronauts in the ship were to be JOHN McGRATH, and PAT RAMSEY, the first woman astronaut. The results of the Miss Pennsylvania Pageant were listed across the headlines GLORIA SMITH Represents Pa. in Miss America Pageant. Also, in the Classical Secion, I noticed that BEV. KNOELLER was making a five-day appearance at Carnegie Hall, that CORNELIA SCHROCK was starring at the Metropolitan Opera House in Madame Butterfly, FLORENCE MORDES was touring Germany where both their paintings and sculptures were selling like hot-cakes. PAT FLACK had just been promoted to head nurse at Colonial Hospital, and PAT ALLAN was named Veterinarian of the Year for Be Kind to Animals Week. Also practicing on the staff of Colonial Hospital were JAMES HAVENER, chief of staff, MARRY ANN KRENO, dietitian, and MICHAEL MOCARSKI, neurosurgeon. I was not surprised to find that IRENE SMOLCZYN-SKI was editor and sole proprietor of the local paper. After completing my reading of the paper, I realized that I was quite hungry, so I got into my car and headed for what I remembered as Gino's but was now under a new name: Brenda's Pizza and Hamburger Palace . Brenda was really glad to see me and offered a deluxe hamburger, on the house, made by that famous chef, BILL WEIDAMOYER, hamburger king of Conshohocken. After leaving Brenda's establishment, I stopped in at JOHNSONS’ FRIENDLY SERVICE STATION, Service with a Smile owned and operated by none other than GEORGE AND IDELL JOHNSON. While having my car lubricated I decided to take a walk into the Wack Recruiting Office, next door. I was surprised to find CAROL OSOWSKI as the recruiting officer with lieutenant HELEN OSTAPOWICZ in hei own office, busy with paper work. While talking with the girls, I learned that screen star LINDA DIJIOSLA was now in Rome filming her latest motion picture and that CLAIRE STUCZYNSKI had gone on a three-month tour to Hong Kong in order to give Karate instructions. JOSE RODRIGUES, I learned, was now a professional Mattador in Mexico and GENE MAZOLLI was his personal surgeon and physician (just in case he should need him). Racing in the Indianapolis 500 this year were quite a few of my former classmates MIKE PETTINE, CHARLES LEONARD (who had held the title for two years previously) and WALLY JONES. Helen then offered to take me to see the new and greatly enlarged high school. I accepted with enthusiasm! First we visited the offices of Superintendent RONALD WINSTON and Principal DUSTY FLETCHER. We then went ontovisit ELVA SILVESTRI in the Physical Education Department, MARIE MASHINTONIO in the Shorthand Department, and WAYNE SIBOLE in the History Department. Following a strange odor led us to the chemistry lab where PETE CALCAGNI and TOM HORN, the mad scientists of Colonial High School were diligently at work. On our way out, we found nurse JOANNE RODEN-BAUGH giving dental examinations to a group of seventh grade girls, so we just waved and moved on. As we drove along on our return trip to the recruiting station, I noticed a very prosperous Sneaker Factory owned by THOMAS REUSTLE and WILLIAM JOHNSON. Just as we passed, RONALD BENEDICT was hanging a freshly painted sign reading Run your fastest and jump your highest in wonder shoes by Reustle and Johnson. I also saw a row of structures, the first built in the form of a gingerbread cottage, displaying the sign Johnson and Buffington's Nursery School, and a building with letters across the window spelling our HELENA ZA-LIK’S School of Linguistics, Three Hard Languages in Ten Easy Lessons, for Three Hard Payments. In the same row of buildings stood RUSSEL BELL'S Demolition Company, You Build It Up--We Knock It Dowr ' and next door was the BATCHLER, DOZIER, ROBERTS School of Secretarial Training. We finally arrived back at the recruiting station where I bid good-by to Helen. I then picked up my car and returned home after an exhausting but completely wonderful day. 42 , 7uni or ( Vass—1966 Under the direction of Mr. Ronald Padula, our sophomore year was started with a democratic election. Delmar Ratkowski, Maryanne Reczka, Brenda Fortes and Sally Campbell were elected class officers. The class conducted a successful fund raising campaign in December, 1964, by selling assorted candies. For the annual Sophomore Hop, the theme A Unique Affair was used as the title. At the close of the year, plans were made for the election of junior class officers. Those elected to hold offices were Sandra Mangum, Delmar Ratkowski, Brenda Fortes, and Karen Richardson. Duringthe year the junior class engaged in three major events, the selling of Christmas Cards, selection of class rings and the election of senior officers who will rule jointly with officers at Plymouth-White-marsh Joint High School. VARSITY FOOTBALL-1965 From beginning to end the 1965 Conshohocken High School Football Season, proved to be exciting, although the team was defeated in all nine games. This year's team, which played in the tough Philadelphia Suburban IV League, was hampered greatly by injuries, sickness, and personnel. This made things extremely difficult for first year coach, Mr. John Joe, and his assistants: Mr. Raymond Weaver and Mr. Ronald Padula. This year's squad dominated by freshman and sophomore players opened the season with a loss to Nether Providence. Inexperience, and numerous injuries began to show their effects and the Bears fell before the superior forces of Collingdale, Ridley Park, Yeadon, Clifton Heights, Sharon Hill, Darby-Colwyn, Eddystone and Darby Township. The season was concluded with only 15 able bodied men, all of whom had stout hearts and desire. Our players proved that they had what it takes to be leaders in a world filled with obstacles. Next year the following seniors will be sorely missed: Robert Moore; a six foot, 180 pound halfback—one of the finest high school backs in the state scored all 19 points in the 25-19 loss to Darby Twp. Chris Bockrath; a six foot, 170 pound quarterback and Gene Mazzolli; afive foot, 10 inch, 160 pound halfback were outstanding backs since their day of arrival to Conshohocken High. This year they were hampered by sickness; Chris pneumonia and Gene appendicitis. Hector Noble; a six foot, 160 pound end and Walter Ault; a six foot, 180 pound tackle, were the team's co-captains. Their play all year was consistently fine. They were both starters this year and in former years. Idell Johnson; a five foot, 10 inch, 160 pound guard and Charles Leonard; a five foot, 10 inch, 190pound linebacker, two very tough and coachable young men. They spent most of their time roving in the opposition's backfield. Thomas Reustle; a six foot, 190 pound quarterback--hurt early in the season, but came back to help very effectively in the last four games. Ronald Winston; manager for 5 years and head manager for 2 years, very dependable, always willing to give a helping hand. Medical attendant for the team. Carl Lake, Harold Moyer, Lawson Dozier, Richard Mattson, Lamont Green and Emedio Ricci are underclassmen who deserve high recognition for their gridiron excellence. CONSHOHOCKEN, PH OCTOBER, 1965 Editors—Irene Smolczynski, Linda DiJosia Ten years ago this month a group of BLUE AND GOLD (magazine) staff members presented to the administration a request to switch to a newspaper. Permission granted. And thus, in 1955, began the publication of the BLUE AND GOLD as we see it today. By making the change the high school met the demand of modern journalism. A closer contact was established between administration and faculty and students, and between school and community. As a member of the Pennsylvania School Press Association and the Columbia Scholastic Press our newspaper has competed creditably with other high school publications throughout its decade of existence. Always the staff has striven to uphold the policy of the paper as outlined by those whose foresight brought it into being: To serve as a link between students and parents, between students and the community; To promote comradeship and friendliness among the students; To encourage in students the desire to write; To print always in good taste, matters of scholastic and extra-curricular importance; To advance the interest of Conshohocken High School in every possible way. To the original staff go our thanks and deepest appreciation for establishing a standard that it has been the honor of succeeding staffs to uphold. Members . . . Left to right SITTING: N. Racich, L.
