■fjiltotij of (?Lii of) 1941 In the year nineteen hundred thirty-seven we the class ol nineteen hundred forty-one began our educational journey, four years of work, work which went hand in hand with play; it was not all work, not all play. Now our school days— golden rule days—are gone, never to return. Our tour commenced on rather rough waters, but capable, guiding hands and a hardy ship soon made these rough spots smooth. Our destination seemed to us indefinite, but soon we became acclimated and were seriously on the path to our goal—graduation, yet that was not a finality, but only a stepping stone to lift us securely up and on to worlds beyond. But at the start we were like a ship without a sail. We were without a staff of officers to steer us aright, so our crew decided to take unto us a President as captain, William Wurster; a Vice President as first mate, William Welsh; and as the rest of the officers for our nautical trip. Mrs. Thompson and Mrs. Rollins graciously accepted this post. Dame Rumor has it that this is a thankless job, but this is erroneous. We carried as our ship's cargo thanks and sincere appreciation for all they have done. To them we owe much, for as we got caught on shallows and flats, they were the ones to push us off to smooth sailing once again. With this staff, the crew and advisers, we swerved from a carefree course to a more serious one, for it took unbending efforts to steer us southward—to Washington! Like all good ships this one encouraged us to have a respite from our daily assigned tasks and enter into extra-curricular activities—sports, glee club, orchestra, band, plays. Many of us took advantage of these breaks from what too often becomes a monotonous routine. Then all too soon came the realization that we were passing the halfway mark and soon would our comfortable deck chairs straighten themselves into two straight bars with cross pieces—ladders for us to climb! Following this would come the struggle, the survival of the fittest. But first we had to explore that strange land that is known to Seniors and Seniors alone; here we were busy, yes, but not too busy for pauses that refresh—our social life together. We laughed, we sang, we worked, we played, knowing that before long these days would end and at the close of one a new day would appear, a day full of responsibilities. Now that day is here, and as we dock, after a never-to-be-forgotten trip, we leave our ship, full of good wishes, to those who have yet this course to navigate. But with us we take something that we cannot give, sell, or lose—something no one can take from us. We hope those now on the journey can complete this cruise as we have done, so that they too will have these indestructible treasures. As our paths now divide and we go our separate ways, whether they be the ways of the skilled laborer, the unskilled laborer, or the professional man, let us keep ever in our minds our motto, He who labors conquers.
