The leaping flame of the flare symbolized many things for Con- roe High. Its undying brillance originated in the past. The flame is kept burning today through the spirit and traditions of CHS. Its flickering colors are as varied as the many people who cal themselves Tigers. ' t. ...,i L. jl .1- I 1.1 CHS . . . KEEPER OF THE FLAM The 1983-84 school year burst into flame as the doors of Con- roe High School swung open and students began milling in the halls. Friends were made, lasting relationships were formed, and many secrets of life were discovered in the course of our high school days. We learned to live, to laugh, to admit our mistakes and take pride in our achievements. We knew we were growing up, but we were still determined to have fun. Our burn- ing pride for CHS grew as the year progressed. We fought to become the best in everything we did, and then fought even harder to stay there. It was not always easy, but being the best was worth it. We learned our lessons from both books and life, and cherished many unforgettable memories. These memories of CHS live on forever, for they make up the past, set standards for ongoing traditions, and inspire individuality. 2 Opening -J

T he Tigers can trace their roots back to the first flame. Today its blazing brillance is a light in the past of Conroe. PAST FLAMES Conroe High School has a very rich historical heritage. Conroe became a boom town when oil wa discovered in 1931. The lure of black gold enticed many fortune seekers to Conroe, and once the; arrived many never left. Their children went to school in Conroe and often chose to remain ii Conroe to give their children the same opportunities they had. This stimulated the rapid growth of th Conroe Independent School District. When oil was first discovered in Conroe the excess natural gas was burned in huge torches. Th( largest of these torches, called the Conroe Flare, could be seen for miles around. In 1932 the students o Conroe High voted to change their yearbook ' s name, which had previously been known as the LIL TIGER and the BLUEBELL, to The FLARE, in honor of the flickering flame that developed Conroe This name change shows what a major role the oilfields played in the lives of early Conroeites. Many things have changed since the early days of CHS. Conroe High School was built in 1963 whei the present Travis Junior High could not accommodate all of the high school students. Even mon schools have been added, but CHS remains the largest. Those associated with Conroe High have man; long-standing traditions that have evolved as the town of Conroe has grown into a thriving city. Dif ferent equipment is used to extract the oil, and now oil is not the only industry in Conroe. The people of Conroe are proud of their history. Their city has thrived on the nourish- ment and encouragement of- fered by the citizens of Conroe. This pride is reflected in the eternal flame, whose brilliance never dies, but blazes on in the hearts of manv. A • Opening
