VOLLEYBALL I Young Spikers Strive for State As the Tigerette Volleyball team looked ahead to the season in early August, mak- ing the playoffs was a goal that they knew would be difficult to attain. Led by senior Sonia West and junior Kelli Kellen, they started the season disappointingly, but the Tigerettes re- bounded for a strong showing in the Conroe Tournament. As they star ted district play the playoff goal seemed to be getting closer and closer to a reality. However, two heartbreaking losses to arch-rival McCuUough and District Champ Westfield ended the dream and the season as well. Despite not making the playoffs, the Tigerettes learned a lot about themselves and their chances next year. Their pride and determination carried a team not even mention- ed before the season to contend for a playoff spot. Annette Putman said, The dedication was there. This is by far the greatest team effort I have ever been a part of With the experience and depth returning to next year ' s squad, things will be looking up for Tigerette Volleyball. CROSS COUNTRY Tigerettes Go the Distance The Tigerettes Cross-Country team con- sisted of seven girls who had high hopes for the 83-84 season. They could be found train- ing hard during the hot summer days. Even the sweltering weather did not stop them. The girls practiced long and hard hours for what lay ahead. They were led by senior Rhonda Hock, who was training to place at the state meet in which she finished ninth. In district competition the team moved from a fifth place finish in 82 to a third place in 1983 behind McCuUough and Kingwood. The Tigerettes took on their op- ponents the way Coach Schmidt had intended them to. Coach Schmidt says, I feel these girls set their goal for improvement and met the challenge. The Tigerettes proved they could go the distance. DANA KUTACH leads the daily practice. 1983-84 GIRLS CROSS-COUNTRY: Back, L-R: D. Goodson, K. Underwood, D. Kutach, D. H: Front, L-R: G. Sullivan, C.
