FOOTBALL Dominate District fcsr-ssKKs The Tiger Freshmen began their first season as Conroe Tigers under the guidance of coaches Frank Romero and James Howell. Although the Freshmen got off to a di sap- pointing start, they came back and won their last seven games of the season. The A team finished the season with a 7-2-1 record. Led by offensive standouts such as Raymond Isbell, Terry Richardson, and Jeff Staples, the frosh went undefeated in district to win the district ti- tle. Defensive leaders Arthur Harris, Steven Mc- Coy, Russell Ferrell and James Glaspie helped the defense register many victories including a 14-6 triumph over arch rival McCuUough. The B team led by Coach Chris Bales also took district with a 7-3 record. With such players as Jeff Edwards, Brian Auld, and Chris Nunn leading the offense, and Jessie Farmer and Johnny Cantu leading the defense, the team had an amazing five straight shut outs in district play. They too, beat McCuUough, but by a score of 38-0. The team had a slow start, but they worked hard and got better, said Coach Bales. With this strong sh owing the Freshmen appear to have a lot of potential. TENNIS Netters Gain Experience As the Tennis Team looked toward the 1983-84 season, the only problem that they foresaw was the lack of experienced players on the varsity team. With only two seniors on the boy ' s team and three seniors on the girl ' s team, the Tigers had much adversity to hurdle. But, led by Sophomores Patti Shafer and Corey Dyke, the Tigers overcame that adversity and made a strong showing. In the fall, the team tennis season, the Tigers finished third behind the senior-filled teams of Kingwood and McCuUough, and they also had quality performances in the Klein I.S.D. Invita- tional and in the Nimitz tournament. With the experience gained from the Fall season, the Tennis Team looked forward to the Spring season with renewed vigor. Thoughts of a District Championship in the spring, and possi- ble spots in the Regional and State tournaments fueled the Tigers to look all the way to State.
