In fits and starts, after many long hours of tears and anxiety, frustration and exhaustion, the yearbook takes form. With the devoted help and fresh ideas of a new sponsor, the E-lare is here after all. The Flare Staff has been involved in an attempt to capture the special excitement of 1971. These are the people who made that attempt — give them the praise or the blame. Unfortunately, mere pictures and words, no matter how painstakingly chosen, can not hope to present more than the bare framework of a year such as this - you the people must add the life, the laughter, the pain, and the stirring of your own memories. Look back on this 1970-71 school year as a great one, a year of a association with people who made it great. We think it ' s been an exciting year, and we ' re proud of this book. We hope you sliare our sentiments. S3 «% The 1971 FJore Staff 54 CHS gains area-wide recognition for outstanding Art Dept. On practically all fronts, the Tigers displayed decided improvement over last year ' s edi- tions, and once again Conroe teams were at least con- tenders, if not favorites, for top honors. If 1971 was a rebuilding year , as some called it, then the word took on a different meaning, for it was no longer merely a lame excuse for a job poorly done. In- stead, the term signified exactly what it said - a per- iod of reorganization and new growth which every school ' s athletic program must have occasionally to stay effective, if the Tigers didn ' t win quite as many games or walk away with quite as many champion- ships in 1970-71 as in past years, there was still no cause for alarm; for Conroe, feeling its growing pains for perhaps the first time, planned ahead for the fu- ture and continued to seek new methods in its pur- suit of excellence. 112 . . . of excellence Football: Tigers surprise the experts with a strong showing Conroe Opponents 13 St. Thomas 6 Galena Park 7 17 North Shore 23 MacArthur 7 3 Spring Woods 29 Aldine 8 6 Spring Branch 13 2 Memorial 7 30 Westchester 21 11 Cy-Fair TOP: Battle-scaned helmets carried plenty of stars, each awarded for an outstanding play. FAR RIGHT: Passes by Memorial ' s well-protected quarterback were deadly for Conroe. 114 A special attitude toward winning There is an attitude at Conroe High School toward winning football championships — a feeling, almost a tradition that a Conroe team must capture the dis- trict title in order to feel a true satisfaction over a season. Consequently, any season, even a winning season, without at least a bi-district game has always seemed somehow incomplete. With the fall of 1970 came such a season, one that was sometimes thrill- ing, often heartbreaking and occasionally completely exasperating for players and fans alike. The year started roughly with controversy over the polls, meaning these experts expected Conroe to fin- ish near the bottom of the district. Fortunately, not everyone believed the polls, but then again the polls didn ' t help very much, either. Time passed with hot August workouts and a couple of encouraging scrim- mages. Suddenly, it was all real, with the Tiger de- fense stepping into the limelight while the offense worked the bugs out of its running game. When it was all over, the Tigers claimed a 7-3 winning record and a one-fourth share of the district title — highly commendable in strong, evenly matched district 16-4A. But, to a team that demanded only the best from itself, the bright, successful 1970 season was still tainted by thoughts on what could have been if only things had gone differently. FAR RIGHT: In the huddle, players got the word on the next play. 116 :7 Pre-district: defense clamps down - yields one TD Conroe started pre-district play none too optimis- tically, facing a tough schedule and tougher pre- season ratings. So it came as a surprise to some when the Tigers shut out perennially strong St. Thomas 13-0. Conroe then gave strongly favored Galena Park quite a scare, but the Yellow jackets prevailed 7-6 when a two-point conversion gamble failed. A muddy field and North Shore could not stop the Tigers the next week, though, as the home team rolled up a 1 7-0 win in the final game before district competition. Although pre-district did not actually count in terms of district standings, it did become an important time for testing strategy and correcting problems. Certainly the problems were there. While the defense stunned everyone with three very air- tight games, the offense appeared unsure, sometimes playing sporadically and fumbling too often. Though no one knew it at the time, these facts would prove significant in district play. ABOVE: Milo and Mitchell effectively halted Paul Burns, St. Thomas ' all-state running back. FAR RIGHT: Smith was thrown back by stiff Spring Woods resistance at the line of scrimmage. 120 District: the quest for a long-lost crown On a regular basis during the past decade, Conroe football teams won their district title in class 3-A competition. They did it again the first year they moved up to a 4-A district, and so it came as quite a blow last year when they lost their crown in the stif- fer competition with the larger schools. This year the Tigers decided to get it back, and, encouraged by a short but impressive pre-district season, they en- tered district knowing they were underdogs, but still unshaken by the polls forecasting d isaster. As the race got underway, Conroe ' s prestige rose with a big win over MacArthur, a squeaker over Spring Woods, and another substantial victory over Aldine. Then the roof fell in as the offense, which had been unpredictable all season, suddenly fell apart. Nothing went right for the Tigers against Spring Branch and Memorial, and, as Conroe dropped from first place, a wild battle for supremacy began. In the midst of it all the Tigers carefully put everything back together after their mid-season slump to finish with respectable wins over Westchester and Cy-Fair. The final tally saw Conroe and three other teams tied for first place, but Spring Branch, with an identical 5-2 district record, carried the 16-4A pennant to bi- district on the basis of a complicated points system. For the Tigers there was, of course, disappointment. But they did win back one-fourth of the district crown they lost last year, and, for all those seniors finishing their high school football careers, the hope of greater things would keep at least another year. 121 The 1970-71 Conroe Tigers 10 Gary Frank - QB 1 1 Paul Butaud - QB 12 Toby York- QB 14 John Blunt - E 20 GUbert Munoz - QB 21 WUlie Smith - HB 22 Calvin Harris - HB 30 Robert Lewis - FB 32 Thurston Matson — FB 33 Glen Bartlett - T 40 Jimmy Sims — K 41 Lawrence Jackson — HB 42 Johnny Shaver - FB 43 Raymond Milo - HB 50 Blake Barton - C 51 Ray Mitchell -T 53 Randy Kellum - T 60 Alfred Gordon - G 61 Scott Freeman — C 64 Brett Benardino — G 66 WUliam Butler - G 70 Don Benson — C 7 1 Tommy Curlee — T 72 Ronald Luce — T 76 Gary Wellborn - T 77 Robbie Schilhab-G 81 Glen Haynes — E 82 Kenneth Harris — E 84 Darrell Boyer - E 85 Zeke Johnson — E 86 Greg Abner — E 87 Randy Spencer - E 23 Glen Richard — E ' miii 1 0 M(i .ma ' h %0Jk t v ALL-DISTRICT SECOND TEAM: RIGHT: (Back row) Ronald Luce, Zeke Johnson, Ray Mitchell (Bottom row) Johnny Shaver, Scott Freeman, Lawrence Jackson. 122 Junior varsity sputters It was a long year for the junior varsity. Compet- ing with stiff Houston area competition, the J.V. boys took it on the chin in five of their ten games, while winning four and tying one. Going against a challenging schedule, the sophomores managed to finish out their grid season with seven wins, three losses, and one tie. Pre-district play was encourag- ing as the Tigers overcame trouble at the free-throw line to finish with a 9-9 mari . But the district race started badly as Conroe dropped the first two games to Spring Branch and Aldine. Then fate smiled as the Tigers stunned heavily favored Cy-Fair 78-71. The momentum carried the team through a win over Mac- Arthur, and then Conroe went cold once more, losing three games to Westchester, Memorial, and Spring Woods. Suddenly the Tigers came alive in the second round, defeating every team in the district except Cy- Fair. While inconsistence plagued the team throu - out the year, the Tiger ' s very weaknesses could prove to be their strong points next year. The 1972 squad will return four starters, and coaches are already say- ing they expect Conroe and Westchester to fight it out for next year ' s title. Nevertheless, two of those six losses came at the hands of rival Brenham, who took first place for the second straiglit year. The first game was an even match until Brenham pulled ahead to stay in the last eight seconds. Down by one, Conroe needed the grudge match several weeks later to stay in the race, but the tense battle saw the Cub- ettes prevail once more 48-42. The Tigerettes fin- ished their season with a win over A M Consolidated, but the damage was done, and Conroe closed the sea- son with a second place finish for the second straight year. This year, early results were encouraging as Conroe took the season opener against Klein and then narrowly lost to powerful Dickenson. In all, four pre-district games, ten district matches, and three tournaments were scheduled by Coach Mary Rook, who looked forward to better things for Conroe in 1971 than last year ' s third place finish. With a new offense and defense, as well as a greater tendency to play as a team rather than as individuals, the 1971 squad seemed destined for im- provement in the new year. FAR ABOVE: Coach Rook. This year ' s squad was composed of many outstanding veterans, including Uriah Barnaby, whose miraculous 6 7 high jump allowed him to place in last season ' s state meet. After winning the district title still another time, Conroe went to the 1970 regional tournament as one of the favorites, but a misunder- standing over a switched ball during play and the re- sulting penalty caused the local team to lose to Hous- ton Lee by one stroke. Last Year ' s disaster was not expected to alter the bright hopes for 1971, however, as talent, experience, and depth all combined to keep Conroe a strong contender for this year ' s district title. ,. However, the Tigers have always been appreciated for their morale and tremendous will to win. The 1971 baseball squad anticipated a highly successful year, finally considering themselves contenders for the 16-4A title. They also expected a tough time of it, for their eight-member district con- tained eight strong teams, one of which was Aldine, the 1970 state baseball champions in class 4A. This year, however, the Tigers could look forward to bet- ter depth than they have possessed in some time, being powered by a strong contingent of experienced seniors and juniors. Pitching and defense were the team ' s strong points, and it was felt that the hitting would come around in time for the district season. With such a bright outlook, it was felt that Conroe was moving closer than ever before to realizing its dream of a 16-4A baseball championship. I 145 Honors 1971 U v The Outstanding Seniors of Conroe High School The honor of being chosen as an Outstanding Senior becomes more precious each year. A panel of faculty members select these students according to grade point average, which must be at least 3.0, character and participation in both extra-curricular and non-scholastic programs. Ronald Luce Ronald, a most congenial person, has earned various honors. He is a member of the F.F.A., in which he has been President for two years, on varsity track and football, and on the All-District football second team for 1970. Ronald ' s secret ambition, , to be a race horse jockey, has been ruined since he reached 200 lbs. Steve Massey As a member of A Cappella Choir, Steve has become well-known throughout the school. He has also been on the National Honor Society, Student Council for three years. Class President his Fresh- men and Sophomore year, and All-Region choir. It has been rumor- ed that Steve would like to go pro in tennis. 148 I . St ' 1 Wally Ford Wally has become distinguished through his wide array of activities. These include Youth for Christ President, Representative to 1970 Boy ' s State, National Honor Society, and being on the golf team for three years. It is thought that Wally voted against girls wearing pants suits because he preferred the mini-skirts. Graham Avery Through such achievements as being a National Merit Commended Student, Math Club-President, and All- Region band, he has shown his desire to be a well rounded person. Graham, a Student Council member, enjoys weigh tlifting in his leisure time. 149 Outstanding Seniors Terry Burdeaux Terry is well-known for her many school related activities which include Vice-President of Student Council, A Cap- pella Choir, National Honor Society and Flare Queen Candidate from Student Council. Outside activities include being elected Outstanding Teenager of America and Presi- dent of Teens Aid the Retarded. Her work in the court- house has provided an excellent experience in that crimino- logy is one of her interests. Mike Patrick Mike, a member of the Student Council and National Honor Society, has earned recognition for himself and his school through his superior work. In band he is President and a member of the Dixie-land Band. He has received numer- ous awards in Livestock Shows and the Science field. Mitchell Vick Mitchell must be one of the most unassuming persons at Conroe High School. He has been President of the National Honor Society, a band member, and one of the most valuable members of the Flare staff by being Sports Editor for two years. He has received a Nation- al Merit Commendation and is constantly active in church programs. 150 1 I Wanda Hill Wanda has proved to be diligent by attaining such honors as Copy Editor for Tiger Tales Staff, secretary of National Honor Society, Semi-finalist in the 1970-71 National Achievement Scholorship Program for Outstanding Negro Students, and member of Quill and Scroll - International Honor Society for High School Journalists. She is con- sidering going out of state for college and majoring in the field of mathematics. Toby York Toby is one of the most versatile students at Conroe High School. He played varsity football claiming an All-District Honorable Mention, varsity track in which he was regional finalist, and basketball. He was President of the Student Council, a member of the National Honor Society, and the Data Processing Club. 151 Outstanding Seniors Cham Dallas Cham has made spectacular headway in science which he plans as his college major. He was President of the F.S.A. and has won first place in the State Science Fair for three years be- sides being in All-Region Band, National Honor Society, and Student Council. Supposedly Cham has failed to create a special glue that would keep mustaches from falling off during stage plays! Ann Williams While maintaining an outstandingly high grade average, Ann has been active in many school activities. She has been President of the F.H.A., Vice-president of National Honor Society, Flare Cornation Candidate from choir, and an exceptional pianist. Pam Holloway Pam has ranked as one of Conroe ' s most exceptional students through her attainment of the positions of Drum Major, Band Sweetheart, Woodshop Sweet- heart, and Homecoming Queen. Being a member of the National Honor Society and All-Region Band are further proof of her remarkable talents. ' . 152 1 ps- Mike Purswell As first male Editor-in-Chief of The Flare, Mike has done a brilliant job. He has been a member of both the National Honor Society and Student Council and has maintained a 4.0 average throughout the year of meet- ing Flare deadlines.
