Texas The students of Conroe High School work toward many goals. Whether an Honor is won by being an All-State Band mem- ber, a National Merit Scholar, or a participant in the Nuclear Science Symposium, each individual strives for accomplishment in his particular field. The outstanding achievements earned during the year make all the efforts seem worthwhile even though a year represents more than awards. The new football uniforms, the vocational building, the drill squad, the German course, the overcrowded conditions, among other things, certainly make 1970. The Flare depicts the story of one year, 1970. Although the emotions and memories of the year cannot be recorded on the pages of a book, pictures and words can attempt to recall the story for us. The people in the setting of Conroe Hi School cause action. The action of 1970 sets it apart from any other year, here at Conroe High School or any other school. It is our year; It is 1970. IVlary Johnson and the members of the art department. On the last day before the holidays, seniors had a celebration in the cafeteria and then sang carols for the office staff (above). Dr. Snipes spoke to the students at the Christmas assembly (left). 36 38 Mrs. Weise ' s second period class Class activities One little-known part of Conroe ' s educational system is not listed as a regular course, but a lesson in salesmanship is as much required as any English or history class. Freshmen, juniors and seniors all work on yearly drives, campaigns, and sales for different purposes. The freshman candy sale (left) earned the money which paid for the student handbooks, and the junior magazine sale ' s profits financed the class of 71 ' s gift to the school. The high salesman of the magazine drive was Robbie Schilhab, and the highest selling class was Mrs. Weise ' s second period with $2,576.49. The seniors held their annual blood drive to assist the Bloodmobile with its work. 39 Organist — Mike Kay I . . .The 1970 Coronafion Queen Gail Lott led the Royal Court, escorted by King Steve Mc- Bride and attended by Princess Kathy Hutchins and Prince Jerry Dueitt (above). The Conroe offense, despite problems in establishing a consistent inside running attack, led the league in total yards gained. The Tiger ' s power came in the air, with quarterbacks Williamson and York both displaying talent in the passing department. The defense also demonstrated talent, and consistently throughout the season it halted opposing drives which could have drastically changed the games ' outcomes. In particular, wins over Westchester and Spring Woods re- sulted from heroic stands made in the closing minutes. While injuries and penalties on key plays hindered the Tigers, factors such as strong student body support and even stronger team pride aided them as they tallied a 6-4 season record and climbed to a second place tie in the district standings. In the season opener with Houston Lee, Conroe ' s untested defense countered the General ' s ground assault but proved inadequate against the pass, and Lee triumphed 1 9-1 4. It was a different story in the two succeeding contests, however, as Conroe quarterbacks mounted their own air attacks, combined with air-tight defensive playing, to rout Bryan and Bellaire 31-0 and 39-7, respectively. The Beaumont Royal Purple put the Tigers to a much stiffer test. Again, Conroe ' s defensive unit was the decid- ing factor, holding the Purple to only a field goal and preserving a 10-3 victory. But even the defense had its problems with St. Thomas, as the f ired-up Eagles out- passed, outran, and outscored the Tigers 32-21 . Conroe again shook off defeat, however, and the clash with Smiley the following week gave the team one of its closest contests, and probably its greatest satisfaction of the entire season. Every score counted in this rough defensive battle, and though the lead changed hands four times, it was finally Jimmy Sim ' s field goal in the final two minutes of the game that clinched the 1 3 to 11 decision for the Tigers. In this manner Conroe avenged its two 1 968 losses to the Eagles, and at the same time the team acquired the momentum deemed important in district play. Sims kicked decisive field goal leading to 13-11 Conroe victory over Smiley. X 112 Nichols and Vinson pounce on Lee halfbaci . flUi) iLlLfe B ., m. Half- backs Guv Martin — Sr. Willie Smith - Soph. Tigers rally as title hopes fade Despite momentum gained by the Smiley victory, the Tigers fell upon hard times as they entered the district race. It was Memorial who gave Conroe the initial shock of district play by capitalizing on penalties and a sputter- ing Tiger offense to win 16-7. Spring Branch then admin- istered the death blow, as the Bears ' powerful defense shut out the Tigers 13-0 and put the district champion- ship beyond reach. At this point, Conroe seemed to acquire new life, and Westchester, despite heartstopping comeback bids, proved no match for the determined Tigers, who captured a 21-14 win in one of their finest games of the entire season. Then, as if to prove it were no accident, Conroe followed through with a passing marathon against Spring Woods to stun the new district champions 20-14 and end the season on a winning note. Though the wins came too late to resurrect the Tiger ' s title dreams, they did boost the team into a three-way tie for second place, thus allowing them to finish with a respectable 2-2 record in district competi- tion. The team looked well enough in pre-district competition, tallying a total of fifteen wins and twelve losses, where, despite a slow start, prospects looked brighter with each game. A major test came in the district opener with Spring Woods, a heartbreaker which Conroe lost in the closing seconds by a score of 47-45. It was at this point, however, that the bottom dropped out of the Tigers ' dis- trict hopes. Injuries and sickness struck the team, includ- ing scoring leader Gary Williamson, and the Tigers were left to face their Spring Branch foes with no powerful offensive threat. The remainder of the season saw Con- roe take successive blows from Westchester, Memorial, Spring Branch, and then Spring Woods again as play en- tered the second round. The season ended with a 52-47 loss at the hands of Spring Branch, who placed second in the district. Despite their poor luck in district play, how- ever, the Tigers showed potential, and with youth, experi- ence, and talent all on their side, prospects for the future look very bright.
