Foreword As its unifying idea, the 1969 Flare depicts transportation in Conroe High School. In recent years sociologists have revealed great influences which the automobile has had on youth in al- lowing new freedoms. From this vehicle stems the ability to travel in an independent sphere - in an environment free of parents. Transportation in this way provides a means of escape and also of reaching a destination. Transportation plays a vital and influential role in CHS. For each person some mode of transportation is involved in attending school. A few students who walk from their homes depend on a pair of shoes; a great number utilize school buses; the remainder are provided with auto- mobile travel. Within the school, people must move to various parts of the building. For a few their mode is supplemented by crutches or a wheelchair, but every person Is involved in the motion of school life. There is, however, more to the concept of transportation than traveling. Consider bearing a burdensome load of books, wearing a costume for a play, even conveying an idea in writing a paper and upholding a determination to succeed. All of these are part of the Flare Staff ' s idea of transportation, which can be defined simply as an act or means of carrying. r r m m ' I I Special vehicles: for refreshments for learning for students for work MsCHOOL BU ' ii g itiiamMmimm Shoes carry students in athletic competition on the football field at halftime to class with others !l II Students transport: ideas, lunch trays, books, and Mac I? ni i c H S •s ;T:3:::rT. 14 Transportation, a foundation of CHS spirit: conveying a play ' s theme bringing awards from competition running miles of training remaining to back the team 1 15 Transportation in Activities: walking to the microphone wearing costumes presenting candidates 16 17 Freshmen await homeroom assignments. Transportation in Sports: the dash to score a ride after practice assistance for the injured 112 1 1 «=■Tigers continue winning tradition in 4A As the 1968 football season opened, many fears were voiced concerning the ability of the Conroe Tigers to withstand 4A competition. However, the athletes disregarded the prophets of doom, and the team seemed quite ready for the season opener with Houston Lee. This was a close one, as the mighty Tigers eased by the Generals 19-14. Martin ' s game ending tackle on the one yard line preserved Conroe ' s victory. Next came the Bryan Broncos, who really made Conroe see red - penalty flag red! Penalized over 150 yards, the Tigers nevertheless corralled the Broncos 22-16. The Tigers then faced Bellaire, and this close, hard-fought match saw Conroe go to the air for three of its four touchdowns and walk away with a 28-20 win. With good momentum going, Conroe was ready to meet Beaumont. Though the first half was extremely tight, the Tigers exploded in the second, trouncing the New Breed 41-7. Boasting a 4-0 record, the Tigers prepared for the showdown with rugged St. Thomas. Defense was the name on the game as the two powerful undefeated teams clashed head-on. Butler ' s 46-yard field goal and Martin ' s touch- down provided the only scores as the mighty Tigers emerged victors 9-0. But, alas, all good things must end, and winning streaks are no exception. The high-flying Tigers fell hard to Smiley 26-0, as crucial mistakes greatly crippled the Tiger cause. Reeling from this shock, Conroe entered district play against Memorial. The superb Conroe defense was at it again, performing with near perfection. The Mustangs made costly Tiger fumbles pay off, however, to pull out a 7-0 win. Twice stung now, the slumping Tigers leaped back into action, skinning the Spring Branch Bears 28-14. Williamson ' s deadly passing attack accounted for four 1st half touchdowns, and a sharp defense killed a strong come- back bid in the 2nd to put Conroe back on the district trail. Badly needing still another victory, however, a red- hot Tiger team made short work of Weschester. Rain, cold, and mud mattered little to the Tigers, as they downed the Wildcats 21-0. At last, the stage was set for the all-important duel between the Conroe Tigers and the Spring Woods Tigers for the district 16-4A crown. Both teams were on fairly even terms, and the ensuing battle was quite close, with the lead changing hands several times, Conr oe went ahead to stay in the 3rd period, then erased a Spring Woods threat in the closing seconds with a pass interception by Phil Jones to clinch the game 16-15. Thus the Tigers advanced to the bi-district playoffs, and in doing so became one of the few teams ire Texas football history to win a district title in its 1st year in 4A competition. 114 FOOTBALL COACHES: (Varsity and Junior Varsity) Lee Smith, W. Conroe ' s hopes were roused when the Tigers drew first blood, but Smiley soon tied the score 7-7. Coitroe again took the lead, but with seconds left in the half Smiley came back with a touchdown, then pulled ahead with a two point con- version. The Eagles added frosting to the cake with a score in the 3rd period, to win 22-14. Smiley player steps over Phil Jones and several tacklers. This is exactly what the Tigers did in the district opener, as strong outside shooting doomed Spring Woods 57-52. The team was equally impressive against Westchester. Though the outcome was doubtful until the 3rd period, Conroe was able to break the game open for an easy 71-52 victory. With two district wins then under their belts, the Tigers faced their stiffest test of the season against Memorial. The Mustangs, out to revenge last season ' s upset loss to Conroe, inched ahead of the Tigers in the 2nd period, then held on to win 61-50. And as if to add insult to injury, Spring Branch followed through with a surprise 4th quarter surge to hand Conroe a 65-59 loss. However, the Tigers quickly bounced back into the race with a 65-57 triumph over Spring Woods, closely followed by a return bout with Westchester in which the Tigers prevailed 75-71. Then, just as cautious hopes were once again being raised, all of Conroe ' s dreams of post- season glory were mercilessly dashed to the ground with an 84-57 loss to Memorial. Yet, even after this, Conroe finished the season with a strong 72-57 victory over Spring Branch. Though the Tigers were unable to advance to the state playoffs as they did in 1968, they nevertheless made an extremely strong showing in district 16-4 A, and demonstrated that they are a powerful new force in 4 A competition. 126 T BASKETBALL COACHES: Bobby VJeise and Lloyd Long. It is certainly an expensive task to undertake. To the people who have supported this yearbook through the purchase of ads, the Flare Staff is indeed grateful. We are confident that the Conroe High School stu- dent body will support the advertised businesses within these pages. Since we could not publish the yearbook without your generous support, the Flare Staff appreciates all that you have done. We are extremely proud of this annual, and we wish to thank you again for making this yearbook, The 1969 Flare, possible. Sincerely, Bobby Brannon, Business Mjinager PAT WALKER (Pat Walker ' s picture was unintentionally left out of the Senior Class section. He is a three year graduate, a mem- ber of the Class of 1969. The concept of transportation established by the Flare Staff is based on the act of carrying or conveying. Included in this category are driving to school, wearing costumes, carrying books, and conveying ideas. Conroe High School is figuratively transported by the students who attend it. In accepting his responsibility to the school, each citizen of C.H.S. carries the school through a progress. Every routine conveyance by a member of the body composing the school contributes to his portion of bearing the burden of the school ' s demands upon him. The transportation of Conroe High School is achieved through a common attitude of pride. The embodiment of this feeling lies in our alma mater Stand for the Gold and White. In applying this song to the idea of transporting, Stand for the Gold and White becomes the initiative, the force causing the student to carry the school to its successes. Each of the students must add his contribution in serving the demands of the school in order to stand for his school. These duties, though often small, comprise the overall transportation resulting from a col- lective student body effort in the Stand for the Gold and White. 319 v
