In the early spring a president and vice president are elected by the student body - then the work begins. These leaders have a tremendous responsibility, for they must lead the students. The projects include the sponsoring of dances, the arranging for auditorium programs, and the over-seeing of all activities. Car- washing for extra money and helping with civic projects, such as the March of Dimes and the Bloodmobile, all come under the Council ' s heading. The main stem of the school is the Council, headed by the following people. President Mike Hill Vice President Julie Hailey Treasurer Lupe Alvarado Secretary Mary Palmer Reporter - - - -Tom Cable Representative-at-Large - - Derrell McDonald Parliamentarian Stuart Coyle Sponsor Luiher Hall I feel that many students have only a vague idea or, perhaps, even a misconception of our Student Council. Having definite objectives, our Student Council is a democratic form of representation of the student body and faculty. The betterment of the school, the building of good leaders and followers for the community, the developing of a feeling of good will between the faculty and students, the pro- viding of educational entertainment, and the devel- oping of high ideals of personal conduct are only a few objectives of the Council. However, by far the most important objective of the entire movement is the developing of the student, himself. To learn by doing is the best method of advance- ment. By taking an active part in the community activities, and by sponsoring our own projects, we on the Council have learned the importance of prac- ticing good citizenship. Working as a group for the betterment of the school and community, I feel that we have learned by doing - the true American way of life. STUDENT COUNCIL OFFICERS Mike Hill President Julie Hailey Vice President 1 Hard work! Late hours! Selling- -the Flare Staff is at work ! The Staff is composed, this year, of twenty -three students. These hard workers, beginning in May, do a little of every- thing from selling ads to decorating for dances. The work of this staff is not limited for they must sell ads, sell yearbooks, sell football pro- grams, sponsor Sadie Hawkins Week and conclude it with a dance, co-sponsor the Sock Hop, pre- sent the Coronation of the Queen of the Flare, and, on top of everything else, meet three big deadlines a year in editing your Flares. The activities include the party at the beginning of the year, trips to various places, (Waco, Galveston, Galena Park) as well as MANY concerts. The choir was also host to the All- Regional Choir and several other choirs. The year con- cludes with the annual Choir Banquet which is held in May. The Tee Square Club members like to consider themselves a professional organization made up of students who are taking or who have taken drafting in C.H.S. They generally meet at 7:00 A. M. , or after school, to do some extra drawing or have discussions on draft- ing, engineering, architecture or possibly a debate on motor cars. These meetings seem to weld a very close band of fellowship between members. There are no social events in the Tee Square Club; outstanding yearly events are the Crane Hook. This year, in October, the third year homemaking students attended the State Fair in Dallas, in November, Garnetta McDonald was elected as District A President for the following year. The membership, which is chosen by the faculty, consists of students from the top fifteen per cent of the Junior class, who are chosen in the spring, and students from the top five per cent of the Senior class, who are chosen in the following fall. It is a great honor to be chosen as a member of this organization because the requirements -- scholarship, citizenship, leadership, and service-- theoretically enable only the best students of CHS to qualify for membership. Besides supposedly setting high and fine examples for the rest of the school, each six weeks the Honor Society gives an informal party for the A students and each year goes on a trip. This is the National Honor Society --when it came to us--what it stands for--and what it does in our school. On December 5, 1959, Tom took a second test and was later announced as a Finalist. There were 550, 000 students who took the first test; only 10, 000 are finalists. This latter group represents one -half of one per cent of all the high school seniors in the United States. Approximately 555-987 winners will be named in March. These winners will be selected on the basis of scores made on the December test, as well as on participation in school and extracurri- cular activities, and they will receive four-year scholarships to the schools of their choice. Tom, who received a Certificate of Merit for having been named a Finalist in the National Scholarship Award Testing program is the first C.H.S. student to have earned such outstanding honor. U£e I960 ( J oyal I uri SPORTS TO THE TIGERS OF 1959 This season to me is not counted in the won and lost column. Our inexperienced boys learned many valuable lessons concerning self- discipline, enthusiasm for the game, teamwork, loyalty to their school, and, above all, to fight with the courage of true Tigers, regardless of the odds, and even in defeat. After all, the mark of a man is that he is courageous in defeat and humble in victory. It is my sincere wish that each football player will be a better man for having played the game; and that some of the lessons learned concerning respect for opponents, self -discipline, loyalty, and cour- age to keep fighting will help you in your adult lives to be courageous Christian Gentlemen. Always remember, the one who wins makes the fewest mistakes. God bless each of you in your future endeavors. For .the last four years this group has been coached by E. Y. Steakley, and Conroe has had the winning team in district during these years. Starting in February, the team practices after school at the Conroe Country Club, preparing for the District Tournament, which is held each year a t Brenham, in the early part of May. Before the tournament, two teams are chosen from the boys and these teams compete with those from Brenham, Bryan, Huntsville, and Navasota. Last year ' s District title was captured by Conroe ' s first team which was composed of Carroll Chambers, Douglas Heaton, Bernard Hoffart and David Deison, a graduating senior.
