FUTURE SCIEIWTISTS . . . Grant Flthey, Hirby LUilliams, LUilliam UJoodson, Fred Davis, Homer Cross, Earl Sisco, J. m. macon, Eva Bess Hnderson, Pauline nisbet, Doris Birdwell, Birdie Hnn norman, Fred Pennington, Billy Cochran. UJ. Fl. Hing, Henry Gibson, Claude Sprayberry, melvin Solomon, Jim Henry Lynch, Curtis Chance, J. T. mcDonaId, Billy Day, Irvin mcCray, John lllaters mcCollough, Boyce montgomery, Harley LUade, H. B. flelson. The Future Scientists of Hmerica is one of the most progressive clubs in the entire school. One pleasurable Feature of their worlu which differen- tiates this club from other clubs is the fact that they have had numerous field trips. H long educational tour was made to Houston and to Galveston, where an elaborate laboratory and an ultra-modern paclzing company were observed. many other trips, even though they were not long, were equally important in educational value. It is on this principle ol visual and practical education that the Future Scientists of Hmerica depends for its popularity. 0 -'O 1' Se. ' Q3 Q' 2' '5' HILLYARDS SALES CO. I EXECUTIVES fTiR. I-IULOH Vt. HUDERSCDH my Friends: Sincere greetings and genuine appreciation are to and lor each person and organiza- tion that have had a part in mahing possible the 1938-1939 FLHRE. ln the years ahead it will prove a veritable storehouse of memories ol happy days together here in Conroe High School. my hope and faith in the FLHRE of 1939are that it shall prove more than cu store- house of memories. may it be an inspiration to those who come after us that they too shall have a part in worthy undertalzings lor the advancement ol universal educa- tion which alone can insure the continuation ol our beloved democracy. HULOU ll. HDDERSOH, Superintendent of Schools . . . . mfs. H. CE. SCI-IHEFER isrvmiisufwh To the staff, sponsor, and constituency of the high school year-boola l extend best wishes. It is a distinct pleasure to be associated with you in your worh. Seest thou a man diligent in his business, he shall stand before kings. The world's worlz must be carried on by ambitious builders as you-be that worla material, physical, or mental. The thought of the following poem may be talzen as a worthy ambition: LUe have builded magnificent bridges l.Uhere the nation's highways go, O'er perilous mountain ridges Hnd where great rivers flow. wherever a linlz was needed between the new and the hnown They have left their marlzs of Progress, in iron and steel and stone. There was never a land too distant, nor ever a way too wide, But some man's mind, insisted, Reach out to the other side. They cleared the way, these heroes, for the march of future years. The march of Civilizationfand they were its Pioneers. LUith lzindest personal regards to all, l assure you that my office is ever ready to extend a helping hand. Sincerely, H. G. SCHHEFER Business manager, Conroe Schools JOHN LU. OILPIN . '- 19 st GREETINGS TO CO-LUORHERS, PUPILS, HND PNTRONS OF CONROE SCHOOL: Hs you scan the pages of this year-bool: K: may you do so with pleasure. Some of us, lam sure, will live over again in our mem- ories the happier hours of the passing year. may the thought ol the foregoing sentence be the desire and privilege ol us all, and may the thought expressed in the following poem be our goal. These words may seem incongruous to you who listen only to the words l spealz The drill on facts, remembered by a few The practice on the use of rules, and all The rest. None of this is paramount. l would not limit you with tools so small To meet the world. But these are things that count: To meet each tasl: with courage, and to thinlz Each problem through, to appraise with lairnes LUith sympathy, to see in nature linhs with God, such lovely linlrzsl To give a hand To all unlortunates, to talze and give, To deeply drinlz of life and truly live. -Hazel Burroughs Swain 1 Surrounded as we are by all material advantages, we should feel challenged to be the most Faithful, the most appreciative, and the happiest school group in the nation. ' ' 9 is Conroe High School may 1, 1939 Dear mary Hnne: School is almost out, and l am going to graduate. Hs l sit here, the events of the past year come crowding bach into my mind, and a tear involuntarily triclrzles down my cheela. This year has been perfectly swell. It was September 5 when school opened, and everybody had a sore throat from rehearsing to their old friends what had happened during the summer. The first football game of the season was played in Dallas-Forest Hvenue High. Fl few cars jammed with students went, but most of us just stayed at home and prayed. It was a surprise game with our team coming out on top, 12-6. mr. montague, a former Canadian mounty and very handsome, was our first lecturer. He told some fascinating stories about the Eslzimos and the Canadian north woods. l can hardly bear to mention the game with Stephen F. Hustin. Rumors had it that they were determined to win, if it tool: everything they had. Hpparently it did, con- sidering what Reagan did to them later. Fl few Houston sports writers thought we would have some competition in the Jeff Davis game, but it was all ours to the tune of 33-6. It was funny the way Sam Houston scored on us first and then we piled up such a heavy score, but anyway the best thing about a game with Sam Houston is the Bloch Battallion. milby, San Jacinto, Goose Creefz, and Lamar were easily won. ln fact, after Hustin the Championship was in the bog for us until the last game. The score was 7-1 in favor of the Houston Schools. Clhis is not original with me. l.Uhat happened after that is too well hnown to repeatj There never has been much enthusiasm in C. H. S. about bashetball, and the loss of both boys' and girls' teams in the first game with l.Uillis didn't help the matter. The Latin Club turned baclz the calendar to 44 B.C.f Johnson Hall was Rome and all stucfz by the old adage llJhen in Rome do as the Romans do. They dressed in trailing garments and reclined on the floor while dining. The Junior Class play, Just For Fun, was perfectly darling. llJe seniors felt rather wistful at the annual football banquet. when l received my little gold pin, thoughts of every drill came rushing and so did tears, which l could hardly hold baclz. However, it was a delightful and amusing party. The largest social event of the year was the Coronation Ball. The ceremony was very effective and so was the dancing. ' Dr. mazioca, Hmerican educated Japanese, visited the school on a mission of goodwill. She did not mention the war between Japan and China, but displayed the attractions of Japan and cordially invited us to visit her native land. Hccording to reports, the science class field trip to points of interest in Galveston and Houston, especially Rice Institute, was very educational. They are sending dele- gates to the State Convention in Galveston. The homely Sadie Hawlzins reigned at C. H. S. for a weela, giving the boys a rush. Honestly, more dates were made that weeh than all the rest of the school year. The poor boys ended up at the Hill-billy dance with circles under their eyes from loss of sleep. UJell, fziddo, l stopped dreaming there and started worrying about that new even- ing dress l have to have for the annual Junior-Senior Banquet. The tentative date is may 25. Yes, it has been a perfectly swell year, educationally, socially, and athletically fif there is such a wordl. with love, Carrie H. Smith INN., fw fa? 4593 J, ,H Q ,.., X N449 ' R A . QQ l. ','.' .. The election of the First Queen of the Flare was a surprising one. Ruth Qla Fultz and Lois Rabon led the race until the Final counting, yet till the very last minute it was a race when anything could happen. Ht noon, Saturday, January 28, the final count was talzen. Virginia Helley, who had previously been a darlz horse in the race, Forged ahead and won the count by a nose. She was acclaimed Queen ofthe Flare and reigned over the Coronation Ball held that night at the Country Club. The ceremony of the crowning of the Queen tool: place about 9:30. The Queen's heralds, Howard CoFFey and Harold lllestrope, announced the court. The Ladies-in-waiting, macel nolzes, Gwendolyn lllagner, Dorothy Carter, Hnnette Rothenberg, Betty lllilliams, Frances Schaefer, Juanita Taylor, and Rebecca Pace entered first and toolz their places around the moss-covered throne. The Princesses, special attendants of the Queen, were Dolores main and Flllene Schoffstall, who were escorted by their Princes, Charles Vander- burg and Donald Barnes. The four runners-up in the race, Ruth Qla Fultz, Lois Rabon, Ruby Laura Hooper, and Tlila mitchell were Duchesses of the court. These young ladies were escorted by Clyde Broolze, Royce Crow, Edward Fergu- son and Jaclz lllestmoreland. Her majesty, Virginia Helley, Queen of the Flare, entered the room on the arm of her Hing, Teddy Sims. The queen was gowned in white satin and wore a gorgeous flame colored robe decorated in gold and sequins. Hing Teddy tool: the crown from the crown bearer, Lllesley Jones, and placed it upon the head of his lady while the court cried, Long live Queen Virginia. Filter the recessional, the court was soon mingling with the crowd of spectators who had gathered to see the coronation of their favorite. Dancing lasted till midnight. Careful consideration is given each candidate, and he is elected because he is outstanding in the four qualities most necessary for well-rounded development: Leadership Citizenship Scholarship Sportsmanship The members of this year's lUho's l,Uho section were chosen through a series of carefully supervised elections. Each home room selected the most satisfactory representatives from its number. These nominees were sifted at a meeting of the entire class, and the result was a group of four boys and four girls from each class who best typified Conroe spirit. with the four necessary qualities that maine for worthy citizenship in mind, each student voted in a secret ballot for the two boys and two girls in each class whom he thought would best represent his ideal of school. The resulting sixteen names have become the most representative students in school while those who were on the ballot, but were not chosen, are the runners- up. This publication of the FLHRE is the first announcement of the results of this election. Left to right in the baclzfield: Howard Shorty UJaIdie, Raymond Daniel, Henneth LUoods, and Harold Barfield. Co-Captain Henneth fBugsJ l.Uood is one of the drivers of Coach Joe l.agow's Tigers. Fl veteran of three successful seasons, Quarter- bacl: lUood has led his team to many victories. To his teammates, Bugs is not only a good player, but a consistently good fellow. Co-Captain Teddy Sims, the other leader of the victorious Tigers, was the versatile left taclzle for Conroe. He was acclaimed all-district for two successive years, and that is ample reason why he was chosen captain. Raymond Daniel, the spectacular runner in the machine that made history in '37, also made history in '3B. Helping to talze his team to District Championship honors for two years, Raymond furnished enough elusiveness to be one of our outstanding players. Charles Vanderburg, lunown to his teammates as Vandie, or to his classmates as Charlie, was a great cog in the Championship team of '37 and '38. lllhen the needed yardage was sought, Vandie was the man who was aslzed. Heith Hellow has been an outstanding player and promises to be even better in the coming year. Due to a shoulder injury, he did not get in full swing until late in the season, but after the injury was healed, he did more than his part of the fighting. Harold Barfield was one of the most important men in the Conroe baclzfield, not only in '38, but the two preceding years that he has played. This year was Harold's third year of football and next year will certainly prove even greater. l.Uilbur Isbell proved himself a real mainstay in the position of left- end for both the '37 and '38 grid years. His pass receiving and ex- cellent bloclzing not only won him fame in his home town but from the out of town spectators as well. Julian Pitts came into prominence with flying colors this year. HI- though this was his first and last year, he surpassed all expectations. He turned out to be a truly fine guard. Clyde fDimplesJ Broolze was one of the surprises left in Coach Lagow's bag from the team of '37. He developed into one of the best ends Conroe has ever seen. Fans will never forget THHT lateral to Shorty. Pete Sumners, taclzle for the victorious Tigers, is, along with thirteen of his teammates, of the graduating class. His last year proved to be a profitable one, however, in his athletic career, Pete can be remem- bered by that San Jacinto game. Q A '92 1 ff- .3 35- 453 Howard fshortyl lUaldie, that dynamic little halfbacl: of the Conroe Tigers, was the sparlz plug of the team's offense. He has made unbe- lievable achievements in his four years of football. Shorty will always be remembered, not only by Conroe fans, but fans the state over. Lloyd Buss is one of the boys that will help Coach Lagow in his '39 team. He promises again to be a fine guard as he certainly proved himself to be in the '38 season. Lllinfred Hampton, better lanown to the team as Hamp, did his full share in talzing the District Championship. His excellent centering was an accomplishment that few have surpassed. Harry Chance played his first year of ball this season. Unfortunate it was that he was not found years before, because he was a real bach- field runner in this year's team. Fans can remember his superb playing in the Jeff Davis game. Tom Dean, the two hundred-thirty pound taclzle for the Tigers, can be remembered by his excellent line-crashing in every game. L. Fl, as he is lznown to his teammates, will return next year. From his fine showing this year, it is safe to say that he is all-district timber. Edward CECU Ferguson was one from our team who was chosen as all- district end. It was plain to see why he was chosen, his fine pass re- ceiving, excellent blocking, and tackling were the reasons. Robert Price was the versatile right guard for the successful Tigers. There was never a gain made through the line especially when Robert was there. This was Robert's last year, but it proved to be a very good one. Ed Ferguson completed his high school career as a baslaetball player with an excellent job of playing center on the Conroe team. His fine worlz is worthy ofthe highest approval. Raymond Daniel, a stalwart guard of the Con- roe cagers, won fame and high esteem from the crowds because of his excellent playing. This is Raymond's last year and he has proved him- self capable of receiving all the honors that can be accorded him. lUilbur Isbell concluded his athletic career in Conroe High with a record that few athletes surpass. l.Uilbur was selected as one ofthe cap- tains forthe '39 team and he served his team to the fullest extent of his ability. Henneth UJood, the other captain of the Conroe cagers, proved himself one of the most efficient guards Conroe has ever produced. His fine, long shots gave him a very envirable reputation as a basketball player. Royce Oualline, although a new-comer to the Tiger squad, proved that he could do things that the veterans couldn't do. Fill in all, Royce was a fine, conscientious, hard fighting player. Gladcell Cochran surprised the majority of the public this year with his very fine playing. You can expect even more from Gladcell in '40 because he is a Sophomore this year. Robert Rice finishes his baslzetball career this year. He has played with the Tigers for three seasons. Robert has been a great asset to the union ofthe Conroe cagers. Franlz Little was one of the most consistent scorers of this year's squad. The year began enthusiastically tor the team, since before the opening oi school, they got into the spirit of the game in the training camp at Rerrville. It was with a spirit ol victory that the year began because such veterans as Renneth wood, Teddy Sims, and Shorty UJaldie were baclz on the team, and it loolzed as ii there were plenty of material which was promising in Coach l.agow's locher. Preseason games merely intensified the assuredness of victory. Forest High oi Dallas went down to the tune oi12 to 6. Then the steam roller passed over Tiavasota at the rate oi 33 to O. Hearts tell for a time as Stephen F. Fiustin, raising herself to a slzill which she never saw again during the season, defeated Conroe Q1-6. The lost confidence was slowly regained and the first step toward new enthusiasm was talzen when John Reagan was nosed out, 12-13 fnotel. The will to victory grew. milby's slzunhing to the tune ot14-O, and the way Conroe defeated San Jacinto 14-13 despite the tact that many oi Conroe's best players were out, put the whole school and town baclz into a fever of excitement. The remaining games were played with steadily mounting slzill and enthusiasm. Jett Davis got only 6 points to Conroe's 33, Goose Creel: lost to a score of 7-24, Sam Houston could only score once while Conroe made iorty-tour points, and in the last game of the season, Conroe piled up Q1 points while she held Lamar High School scoreless. The final and decisive game of the season was played in Houston with the district athletic committee calling the plays, and Conroe was out-pointed. Reagan and Conroe had been defeated only once during the entire year, so they tied for first place in the entire season. Conroites thought thot, since the Tigers had defeated the Bulldogs, the championship could not be awarded to Houston, but it was. Reagan and Conroe were declared co-champions, however, Reagan had the privilege ot playing the bi- district game and of continuing her quest for the state championship. Hurt feelings were healed and everybody was happy by the time the annual foot- ball banquet was held on January 3. The Football squad, the pep squad, and the band all received rewards for their loyal participation in the year's victory. The whole city of Conroe was delighted when Howard, Shorty, U.Jaldie received a wrist watch from the Houston Post because he was judged by the sports writers oi that paper to be the most valuable player in the district during the year. This was the second time that this award had come to Conroe. .3 63- gs, 0, '22 6 df- 03 - J f 5.'22?E1 2. Those attending were dressed as Boman gods and goddesses, and, in true Boman style, reclined while eating. The club is an active member of the Junior Classical League, a nationwide or- ganization, whose members continue to hand on the torch of classical civilization in the modern world, and they believe an acquaintance with the civilization of Greece and Bome will help them understand and appraise this world of today which is in- debted to ancient civilization in its governments, laws, literatures, languages and arts.
