Second, We give and bequeath the ability of Jim Cox, Juanita Brown, C. L. Coe, Juanita Bell, and Malva Butler to do assignments to the Sophomoresg and those benefactors must ever improve to hold same abilities. Third, We do hereby nominate and appoint our said friend Mr. Hulon N. CSkipperj Anderson sole executor of this our last will and testament and direct that no bond or other security be required of him as such executor. We had our own sit-down strike within the walls of our own noble institution of higher learning. It is a sad, sad fact, but the leaders of this strike were in the illustrious Junior class. Instead of the usual short period of time for strikes, these same juniors had to be different and start sitting down on the opening day of school and continued sitting until the closing day of work fthat isffor somel. It's a wonder that some of them were not permanently injured by not enough exercise-mentally as well as physi- cally. Some of the principal strikers were: Virginia Ruth Simpson sitting down waiting for Luby Smith, an ex-student, or just any one else. It really made little difference. Billie Sue Madeley sitting in a relaxed position anticipating the arrival of joe Blum Stinson-or was it the other way around? E. L. Hardy sitting down wishing that either he were a lowly Sophomore or she a junior. T. G. Billingsley sitting for fear that the Moon had struck. Mary Agnes Stinson sitting waiting for 'SSpookey johnson to find that all is not gold that glitters. Billy Moore sitting and waiting for Mittie Sue Carter to wake up and see the light of day. Cam Harrell sitting very still making up his next wise-crack for Mr. Burnam's Plane Geometry class. Bane Hereford sitting wistfully thinking of Ra fno, not the sun godj and wishing that Burnet were just a little bit nearer. N. S. Box and Ikey jones sitting together QNOW we are getting some- wherej. Charley fgood-lookingj Hill-just sitting. Girls, youire slipping. Hoyle Simes at ease with a complacent expression on his face. Mimi Nutter sitting in Sam's Drug Store peacefully sipping a refreshing coke -such idleness! A group of football players Uhangin' round the points of interest on Main Street trying to get a ride with some one-any one would do. .lim Lilley sitting in Mr. Cloninger's class looking wise. Ursel Barber sitting in his bright green Ford trying to rate a date. Robert Butler sitting down complaining that he did not get enough to eat- poor boy! Rebecca McCall sitting and waiting for the sun to rise-or just anything so long as it has a tinge of red. As school drew to a close the several members of this said Junior class agreed to compromise. They have solemnly promised not to strike throughout the sum- mer months-so long as the folk at home are agreeable and will provide a pleasant vacation period. They stimulated that no work be demanded of them, for they feared that such would be detrimental to them when school reopens next Sep- tember. - -iw-Alzirifjilvt .iv-fiat! - 1 -3' e?'5li tr' ww- . . . .-: s -.Rm -MZ-f 'r'3t4tff+f:f'. 4 ., . Sixty-thre Junior l-ligh School 0 The building program in our rapidly growing system accounted for the moving of the Junior High School group into temporary quarters on the high school campus during the current year. These youngsters, vibrant with life, adapted themselves, under the very capable direction of a strong corps of teachers, to the crowded situation and to conditions associating them with older children. Confusion was minimized, work went forward, and the year witnessed the growing need for modern and permanent buildings and equip- ment for this groupg in fact, it may be said that the Junior High School had its inception during the year, for the need became more and more evident. Superintendent Anderson speaking in an unofficial capacity pointed out that he was recommending that the campus which is to be vacated by the Sam Houston elementary school next year be reserved as the site for a junior high school, when and if such plans may materialize. The administrators of our system have acted wisely in the program of expansion, and the citi- zens of our community may be assured that further building will not be instigated until the need becomes imperative, and until they can see their way to proceed in their usual business-like way. It is possible that the temporary buildings on the old elementary campus will be set in order during the coming summer months for the housing of the intermediate groups. And it was further pointed out that the teachers in our system should devote nine months of study to the philosophy and practice having to do with the junior high movement. Speaking of the housing and the equipment which are the first require- ments for thc organization and the administration of the junior high school, Mr. Anderson said that the group should first of all be in a building of its own 5 that all furniture in such a building should be of the movable type g that there should be adequate library facilities with a trained librarian in charge, and that the library should be continuously open during the dayg that adeqaute laboratory equipment should be available g and that more than any other group these children need spacious ground and equipment for the physical development of these boys and girls. Conroe Independent School is truly headed in the proper direction, and an outstanding system and an improved community ARE the result. fied:-I--i'--fywnz.-.-,.'r-'J'Pie: r.-W:-1-'if'-'1of-.--:'f-U-U.-ah 'i'-I-AZ--'im .fs..:us:41Ti- - i --lb ' . , s. ,. .,,t.,-,r.-.Q.,,n,, In V si, . y ,im t ,,,, .V. ,I ,am , I ,H Sixty-four -i A T 'QMESEF 4' -a s flssfissigiii , OKEW Cff 332 A My X ' Av H X-,P mag Xi'-5 Z ffbfi, PM Mari 'Cl ,IZ 7 ff QIJQKD7 f 2 sf 35:3 157760 2114-:-7 M f A I m 1U!sf.'Wf X 5 W' Wilu W E' H fy. lqf THE ELECT .Many are called' but few are Cll,0S671,. Our' able coaches, Mr. joe Lagow and Mr. Lawrence McCullough, worked hard with the boys, and much of the team's success is due to them. The first game of the season was with Willis High School. The Willis Wildcats offered little competition, and the Conroe eleven carried off an over- whelming victory, 63-0. Navasota and Grapeland were the next two opponents on the Conroe schedule, and neither squad was capable of scoring on the Tigers. The first team to score on Conroe during the season was Milby High School of Houston, reputed to have one of the strongest teams in that city. The Tigers, however, eked out a 20-19 victory over the Milby Buffaloes, pushing the ball over the goal line for the winning touchdown during the last few minutes of play. The Tigers' first game away from their own gridiron was unfortunately with the Reagan Bulldogs of Houston, another powerful eleven, who managed to gain a 29-12 victory over our eleven. The following Houston game was with the Sam Houston Tigers, and it proved to be the only game of the season in which the Conroe Tigers failed to score. The following week Conroe played the first game after which the fans left the Conroe home field without the satisfaction of having seen their team the victor. San Jacinto won a 13-7 victory over the Tigers. In the next game, Conroe again invaded Houston, this time to be defeated by jeff Davis in a hard fought battle with the final score being 37-20. The last three games of the season were probably the easiest. The Conroe Tigers attained a 64-6 victory over Webster, followed by Conroe's trouncing the Normangee squad. The football season had a happy ending for the Tigers, when they defeated the staunch Orange eleven 26-7. p MR. Jon LAGow Football Coach Physical Education Director MR. ' 4 -'CJ A'- -MARTIAL ,J NAMES AROUND OUR CAMPUS The naming of objects or persons is EASILY one of the oldest customs . . . old as the HILLS you might sav. We don't give a HOOT be- cause we think it fascinating to MOON over the variety of names. We HOPE that a HUN- TER in his ROUTT around our campus will find, unless he is absolutely LOONEY, not only a mere MANN but a DUKE-perhaps not of Windsor, but he is REAL. A few steps away we see ALEXANDER . . . yeah, you guessed it . . . not the Great but Ed. Nor is our school so worldly as to be without a POPE. Wander over our LEA just far enough to view our BROOKE-as delightful and refresh- ing as any woodland stream. One would be a SAPP to overlook the lovely LILLEY, the ROSE, the IVY or anv FLOWER for that matter. Ah, yes, the BERRYS . . . can't give information as to their variety . . . wild or tame. And should the day seem LONG, soon there will be heard the BELLS. Bells, Bells, Bells, not so musical as those of Poe but as capable of being heard. It takes a KEEN sense of humor to appre- ciate the fact that for MILES around the BUSS transports our occupational pupils,-the MIL- LER, the TAYLOR, the BARBER, the COOK, and the STEWART. lust a few words to enlighten you . . . The BARNES that stand in our midst are not dis figuring, the CANNON is not so dangerous as the name would indicate, the HAMM is not so stupid as Dopular opinion gives him credit for being, the BARROW is not of the wheel type-far more attractive even if not so useful, the COLEMAN is useful even if we do burn gas. We are glad that we have CASH whether it came by CHANCE or CHEATHAM in a deal. There are still other names to catch our fancy but do not trust the COX to steer us upon the right path at all times in our search. However, I noticed several LAMPS that will help keep the HALL light. For goodness sake don't break that fragile GLASS or vou will be out on BOND. Some schools have RIGGS on their campus . . . tish, tish, we have one in our library. It is possible to become lyrical when speak- ing of our school MADELEYS. There are those who fso we are toldj can't be bought, but we are proud to say that C. H. S. has its PRICE. We have a PATTON-not yet reg- istered in the U. S. office. Dietrich has her legs, C. H. S. has its KNEE. Leave it to the LACKEYS to do the odd jobs such as STOWE the WOOD in the BOX or fishing in the POOL for HERREN . . . not a fish but a Senior and her sister will be the reward. It is a WISE person who does not go off in a HUFF because our musing is for the MAIN part a LITTLE LOWE in HARDY humor. A RAY of light as to the meaning of all this may PIERCE the dense fog of uncertainty before the KNIGHT is over. We are quite certain that no cops are looking for the OUTLAWS in our school . . . NIX, you give us a PAYNE to suggest that they would KNEEL to SLAUGH- TER or disregard the law and WADE in the park fish pond. ROACHES, too, are harm- less although they may PACE around and eventually destroy the RICE. Quite a selec- tion of color we present to you: LAVENDER, HAZEL, BROWN, GOLDEN. Well, dear LACEY VALENTINE, without a SHEPPARD to guide me I've tripped in the REED and fallen into deep PITTS so thanks for the COFFEY that kept me awake while I read this . . . yours for the PEOPLES sake. PERSONAL NOMINATIONS For: The school's loudest giggler: Faye Price. The boys who were more and more determined as the close of school drew nearer and nearer were as follows: E. L. Hardy Billv Roy Tipton Cam Harrell Jim Wise Hal Anderson Hunter Waldie. Edwin Wood And the action of the aforementioned boys brought an air of seriousness never before no- ticed in the manner of the young ladies. There were growing threats of taking the vows and of living a life of complete seclusion. You may pair them off as you like: Sue Woodson Frances Schrock Kathryn Williams -Ianye Real Mary Ethel Waldie Patricia Talley. Rebecca McCall IMPRESSIONS FROM THE SENIOR PLAY Pursuing the keyhole method of obtaining information-a means so popular throughout the school year-we gather these facts from members of the cast of the Senior play, THROUGH THE KEYHOLE: That Ozella McGehee had more than the French accent, That Lester Linscomb is postively indispens- able to the welfare of Billie McManng That Frances Schrock is no better as a grand- mother than she is as Frances! That the amorous chord in George M. Walker was touched more than once 5 That Justice Smith makes less fuss over an ordeal than some of the other members, That something in Charles Patton has changed even the expression in his eyes, That histrionic ability in Wilson Brumley showed an upward turn of fingers. -T RECORD OF A CERTAIN FOOTBALL PLAYER E. Wood failed to gain by yards on the grid- iron, by inches at the Simpson home, incurr- ing a broken knuckle in the latter attempt, and finally he was able to score a touchdown at the expense of a certain new blond-a transfer from Highland Park High School, Dallas. LOONEY VICTIMS IN HIGH SCHOOL REVEALED For lack of a better term we submit the fol- lowing looney victims: Patricia Talley. Mittie Sue Carter fnot nearly so rabid as the formerj. Frances Schrock fdisease characterized by fits of winking in the hallwaysj. Virginia Ruth Simpson QPalpitations of the heart with each tacklej. Edna Earle Thomas falways fearing that Monkey Lockhart would find outj. Ida Mae Kelley feyes dangerously brightj . lean Houser Cwe can't go into case history in this small spacej .
