ESTHER MAY MORRIS Esther May is nice to everybody. She is the possessor of that rare quality known as true culture. ERCELLE LILLIAN KNIGHT Ercelle-studying is her specialty. In fact, the teachers say she never missed a lesson. CARSON UZ Z ELL Carson possesses a strong character plus a big heart, and is known as a true Jeffersonian. 18 ANNIE AULINE BAKER Auline, a poet in our midst, but distinguished most by her combative spirit. She is one of the quiet kind who Works effectively. 19 Svminr 0112155 Hrnphrag It was on a winter's day, when the children couldn't play, That their grand-dad, our own Glen, told this story to entertain them. Many, many years ago, I to school like you did go, And my school-mates, all so dear, to my memory reappear. First does Helen enter here, because her fate seems so queer, Your destiny must be obeyed, and she is now a precise old maid. Rube Simonton is in the light, because on the street he appears each night. His fame is known through all the land as the director of a Jazz Band. Daisy next comes to mind as I think of the old times. She always talked but now, alas, in a deaf and dumb school she teaches a class. Fletcher we thought would a doctor be, but now we are very rejoiced to see An orator oi great and compelling power holding eager crowds hour after hour. Mittylene, our dear blonde, of whom we were all so very fond, Inspires great crowds with her bird-like voice and gives them all much cause to rejoice. Auline now I think I see, surrounded by a company, Since she's a governess on a western ranch, and never misses a single dance. In a university is a great professor we are told always Working as he did of old, This is Rudolph, Oh, what a mystery! He has become a teacher of history. The world has heard of Kathryne's fame, for she is a novelist with a great name, And all the people, both young and old, read of her heroes, brave and bold. The President's wife has now no cares for there is one who watches her affairs. This is Vernon, our school mate, concerning Whom, I now relate. And now Carson, a soldier bold, commands an army, I am told, His men obey without delay, the orders he issues from day to day. That picture on the wall, causes all who see it to recall, A cartoonist of world-wide fame-Eugenia, is her given name. Fannie Pearl is laughing yet, that laugh of high school fame, She's still the same, sweet, little girl though she has a different name. Mamie is a Red Cross Nurse, who has just returned from the East, but listen, She had completed what all the people call a wonderful mission. Prosper returns after an absence of several years and obtains possession of the letter. He is compelled to marry as soon as possible in order to please his uncle who insists that he marry within six months, and since Prosper hopes to be his uncle's heir, he attemps to please him. He accordingly tells Madam De La Glaciere that he desires to marry Mathilde, her sis- ter, and keeps the letter as his antidote. However, matters do not develop smoothly, for a notable is in love with Mathilde, while Zenobie tries to discourage him, and Suzanne has sworn to obtain the letter for Prosper. She succeeds but in so doing leads the Baron to believe that it was herself that Prosper loved and that she still loves him. In order to protect Louise, the Baron's wife, and Prosper's former sweetheart, the Baron decides that Prosper, either dead or alive, shall marry Suzanne. Mademoiselle Suzanne loses the letter and after passing through the hands of Baptists and Brisemouche, Anatole obtains it and writes a love letter, on the opposite side of the same scrap of paper to Mathilde. Pauline, through mistake, gives the letter to Zenobie. Complications arise, but are settled and Suzanne and Prosper find out they really love one another and are not merely de- ceiving the Baron. The moral of the play is that you should never write love letters to your sweetheart. Tell it in words and in after years you will not be troubled by incriminating evidence in the form of a scrap of paper. CHARACTERS Prosper Couramont .......... ...., .....,.................... ...... His acts covering four years. CHAPTER I. OUR BEGINNING. September, 1917, the Freshman Class was born. We had twenty- nine Innocents who began their High School career. Some of our teachers were disappointed when they first saw the class, believing us to be lacking in mental ability, but in some cases we have been able to prove that they were mistaken. CHAPTER II. WE ADD A YEAR TO OUR GROWTH. We now entered upon our Sophomore year. This year proved suc- cessful as most Sophomore years do. Two of our members, Ercelle :ind Eugenia who had left us during our last year in grammar school, re- turned and we are glad to welcome them back as Sophomores. It was this year that Rudolph came to us from the Willis school. As we recall this year the outstanding feature is our garden work in our agricul- ture class. CHAPTER III. WE MAKE ANOTHER BEGINNING. Time passed on and there was a blank in our memories through which mid-term and final Exams passed, This year our boys entered upon the foot-ball list. The games, most of which were fought on our own gridiron aroused our enthusiasm, in spite of the fact that we lost most of them. This year Helen came to us from Somerville. ' CHAPTER IV. THE END OF THE TRAIL. On September 23, 1920, the Senior class assembled to begin its last year's work. We have sixteen members, thirteen having dropped along the way. In September 27, we met and organized our class. We chose + ,........ 11,-1111 niniln-ln-un1nnT5n1nn 11111 -- 1 1 1-1 - 1 1 1 1 4. .4 Glen for our President, Ercelle for our Secretary, and Esther May for our Treasurer. We decided upon Gold and White for our class colors, Shasta Daisies for our class flower and B 2 for our motto. Carson waited to graduate with our noted class. Fannie Pearl came to us from Linden, Fletcher from New Waverly and Rube from Montgomery. We are very proud of the members of our class who enter into athletics. We have Daisy from the basket ball team and our famous foot ball stars, Glen, Carson and Rube. We have perpetuated our name through several successful social affairs, the most important being a weiner roast, a marshmallow toast, our George Washington tea and our numerous Senior parties. The time is drawing near when we leave C. H. S. the place around which cluster memories of the happiest days of our lives. We have been successful in all our undertakings and if we could feel that we have inspired the classes which follow us to a better understanding of the trust reposed in them, by us, to carry on and increase the good Work begun for the betterment of our school, we could feel indeed, on that night not far distant, when we recieve our diplomas, that we have come to the end of a perfect Way. And we could feel that we deserve Mr. Anderson's words of praise as he says, Well done, thou good and faith- ful students. --K. K. Lila Talley It was an astounding success, filled with zealous ambition of Raw- den Crawley to ruin the happiness of his wife, Rose Raleigh, who thinks him dead and is engaged to Amos Coleman, a prominent lawyer. Deacon Dubbs, a potentate of the hills, was leading actor and was the chief cause, after the death of Rawden in a railroad accident in his haste to evade the law, of the happy marriage of Rose and Amos, the man she really loved. The play portrayed the life, manner and customs of the hills of the mountains of West Virginia. It ended with an old time square dance, and many a church member broke the monotony of the spell-bound audience with the pat of his foot, another striking feature was a corn husking. After the dance the news of Rawden Crawley's death came in the form of a telegram to the Major, who adjusted his spectacles and expostulated the significance of it to those about who were incapable of deciphering it for themselves. The Major being the auctioneer and a man of many Words. As there were three couples seriously engaged in thought of the fu- ture, namely:--Dueteronomy and Yennie, Amos and Rose, and the Dea- con and Miss Philipena. The Deacon suggests a triple wedding and a honeymoon to Sorgum Center, State of West Virginia. Then as the curtain slowly fell upon the successful troupe they sang Carry Me Back to Old Virginnyf' ,. - - - --.-.a.-.-..-.-..-..- -..-.,-.-..-..-..s.-,.-....-.- -.-...-a-.s .L 34 iiiiuing This drama was presented as a principle featur. of the school term. Preceding the cantata several very attractive specialties were given by pupils from the expression class of Miss Marie Alice McComb and the music classes of Mrs. A. W. All of the specialties were up to the Lfsual high standard of these classes, but one, because of its novelty and the appreciation given it by the audience, deserves special mention. A man never passed Jake on the field, he always got them and they always fell flat. The enemy always spotted the Captain and hit low, - the news had been passed on He has a Charlie hoss in his right leg, but they wanted him out of the game anyway and well-so would you. A brave fighter for the vict- ory of the C. H. S. What more could be said? Half-back Our northern friend met his fame as half-back, but not before he had been tried on the lines. There was no use keeping a. back field man on the line, so he was moved. Clinton hits the line anywhere from 3 yards to a touch-down, he was the man who made the only touch-down in our last clash with Cleveland. Clin- ton is a little slow, but weight and strength carried him through to great glory and he well deserves the cheers. Half Cotton played center first, but fit another posi- tion so he found himself in half-back. He played full- back one half in Living- ston. His stiff arm, side- steps and ready grin placed him on the roll of fame. He is fast for his weight, making him a hard hitter. he would hit the line like a whirlwind and always raised -A cheer. Tackle Tackle Sambo played the first game in Cleveland and re- ceived an injury that pro- hibited him from playing but twice since and that a half each. He gritted his teeth and stood it out as head linesman. He wanted to be in the clash and play, but his lame knee could not stand the punishment. Outlaw entered school late and missed the first month's practice. Though he failed to do any out- standing work this year, we have good material for next season. He played tackle in a few games and proved that he had determination and pluck-and that is half the tight. Jack was rather un- fortunate this season and could not play and practice as he should, to be at his best. The team was out a good man, too, for Jack is a fast and steady guard. He played in two or three games, notably the famous Heights game on this field. Luck frowned on C. H. S. that day and few were the men that lasted throughout the game. Atta boy. Anyone who knows foot- ball will quickly acknowl- edge that Bingo was one of the stars of C. H, S. He is the only sure enough center we have ever had. His ready laugh was just as indespensible to the game as the opposing team. He delivered the ball true every time, and if the man didn't receive it, it was not his fault for it was always there. All the games were spicy, well attended, full of pep and ginger, And as the girls mustered all their endurance, vim and determination in the exciting games, the enthusiasm on the part of the wildly, screaming rooters was at high tide. The C. H. S. has had a very successful basket ball team for the past two years. Unfortunately, we have been unsuccessful the present year in getting many games, how- ever, few challenges were neglected. This policy of the team: To know no team too strong to try is due to the fighting spirit of each individual player, who ever bears in mind our motto: Have a way or make it. May the spirit of school loyalty which has been promoted by the games, the thrills and joys experienced as our conquering team plays K'manfully and the glory for team play be long lived! WEINER ROAST. One of the best times of our Senior year was the Weiner Roast, January 14, 1921. The weather was just right to put pep into every- body. With our weiners, bread, onions, pickles and marshmallows we Went down the railroad track, armed and well prepared for a glor- ious time--and we had it. A big fire to sit by toasting marshmal- lows, and posing for kodaks caused the time to pass quickly. By six o'clock we were back in town with memories of such a good time and a feeling that the senior class was the best ever. GEORGE WASHINGTON TEA. On February 22nd, at the Log Cabin, the Senior class invited its friends to a George Washington tea, the proceeds to go for the benefit of the school annual. The Chamber of Commerce rooms were beautifully decorated with ferns and cut flowers. The guests upon being met at the door by Miss Aloise Walker, were presented to the receiving line. Martha and George Washington represented by Ercelle Knight and Glen Rose, stood at the head of this line, which was composed of the senior class. Carson Uzzell, held a Colonial hat into which each guest dropped an offering, afterwards receiving a favor. Mrs. R. E. McKibbin, Jr., our gracious matron, presided at the tea table and here each guest was served with tea and sandwiches. We were fortunate in having two old relics of the Washington family, an old walking cane and a sun dial. MADGE EN TERTAINS On the night of February 24, 1921, Madge Cheatham entertained the Basket-Ball team with an oyster supper and theatre party-drinks 'n everything. There were served three delicious courses of salad, - xsters and desserts. CAfter dinner mints included.J The remainder of the enjoyable evening was spent at the Conroe Play House. The public need not be surprised at the disappearance of the Conroe Cafe sign as Slats and Bob not being content with cleaning up on the inside paused to eat the sign on departure. Kathryne, one of our seniors, entertained her friends with a watch party, Friday, December 30, 1920. Games were played and enjoyed, but the most interesting of these seemed to be watching the old year go out and the new year come in. As the last chimes of the bells died away, the hostess was surrounded with laughing boys and girls. each thanking her for the last happy evening of the Old Year. It was all the girls could do t. vkeep the boys off, but the game was not long de- layed and soon we were feeding our faces fried chicken, fruit salad, potato salad, stuffed eggs, peaches and cream and cakes galore. Noth- ing was left out. After supper the fountain, swings, seats and the pond furnished amusement especially for the more adventurous and searoving Kistic, Queeney and Frank. Lights out at 10:80, no moon, so we scrambled into the truck in quest of more joy only to be delayed by the refusal of the truck to start. All of the boys tried to coax it, but it was Rudie's powerful arm that accomplished the feat and sent us on our way.
