Many things occurring during a school year have become memories that will re main with us for the rest of our life Years from now we can reflect on our days at Conrad Weiser Winning the big game, dancing the last dance with our favorite person trading school pictures, passing a test we thought we had flunked making the team singing at the Christmas program, and signing year books are some of the good things well remember. Along with the good memories there are some unpleasant ones. Getting called to the office, having our locker rigged, re- ceiving a high book fine and losinglour locker key are a few of the unhappy mem- ories we will retain. These are just a few of the many mem- ories we will have of Conrad Weiser. School Life is the little things each person will re- member in his own way. 4 School Life ? .7 Q F 3-.+. The record-setting chicken barbecue sales and the outstanding job done on the junior Prom exemplify this characteristic. I hope all of this year's seniors have utilized all the opportunities for learning presented to them. An education is the most important step in gaining success in later life. Through the course of our lifetimes we may lose many material possessions, but there is one thing no one will ever be able to take away from us, and that is our education. The Class of '77 has been a resilient, dependable, and aggressive group of young men and women. If these traits shown in high school are used in later life, l'm sure all of the members of our class will develop into responsible citizens. jon L. Miss r - u I -U l V l L pr, . 416. The girls were judged on talent, youth fitness, poise and appearance, scholastic achievement, and a judges' interview. Nancy Bailey was Conrad Weiser's representative to the pageant. In the talent competition Nancy sang a meaningful song called By My Side from the musical Godspell. Nancy offers the following comments on her experience as Conrad Weiser's representative to the pageant. The opportunity to represent Conrad Weiser in the junior Miss Pageant this year has been one of the many highlights of my senior year. It was a truly exciting and unforgetable experience. l only wish that more people could be involved. I'd like to thank everyone, friends, faculty, and family, who supported me through the pageant. It meant a lot to me. The Weiser Spirit was very proudly felt and shown on October second. lr. Miss FOREIG EXCHA GE . . . 1976-77 SH l've always liked to travel and to meet new people and during this year I have had a good opportunity to get to know people and learn English. This whole time has been exciting and interesting, and l've learned much about your life. My family has been great, and I'm sure that I'm going to miss them a lot when this year is over. The school here is very different from ours, and every day I learn something new. People have been very nice to me and I'm sure that I'll have a lot of good memories when I go-back to Finland. Satu Roppanen Exchange Student from Finland at Conrad Weiser 76-77 1 ll The time I-spent in Finland this summer was one of the most educational and exciting experiences thus far in my life. I visited many places, made lots of friends and acquired enough memories to last me for a long while to come. lt's really interesting to see how people in another culture can be so similar, and yet be com- pletely different at the same time. Given the chance, l'd like to return to Finland some day and visit my family and friends again. This depart- ment is always prepared for the student who becomes ill during the day. Other functions of the Health Suite include checking absentee cards, giving TB Tests to fresh- men and physicals to juniors, and recording the height and weight of every high school student. 64 Library, Guidance, Health vqmniiilnvv--,,, , Mrs. Marianne Kline Library Secretary The Library is one of the most versatile areas of the high school. It is used not only as a place to find books and magazines but also as a classroom and a site for many meetings. Students and faculty make use of the 15,327 books for both reference and leisure reading. The 183 magazines and 8 newspaper subscriptions provide enough di- versity to meet everyone's read- ing needs. A new feature of the library this year was the Picture of the Week. ln cooperation with the Art Department, a series ol famous reproductions was displayed in the hall outside the library. He will remember studying for tests, writing compositions, learning mathematical formulas, memoriz- ing word lists for a foreign language, doing exercises in gym class, and looking at the internal structures of a frog. Of course, no one will re- member all the information taught in a class, but everyone will retain some sort of memories of the curriculum. -1 , I, up ,lr 1, -L': E 'Fz .I .3 f if s,r 88 Curriculum NLJ E P34 Q35 ENGLISH ...WATCH THAT SLAN K' ,Z'RLf- ' 'Tiff-I il' I :U . In United States History II, we listened to actual recordings of historic events such as the Hindenburg disaster. World Cultures memories will include learning about Russian, Chinese, and African ways of life. In Problems of Democracy, the functions of our government were studied. These are old memories that each student will have of Social Studies. Social Studies 97 FGREIGN LANGUAGE . CONVERSINQ iv I R -G- g Foreign languages are bridges to other cultures. This bridge construction is of- fered here at Weiser in the form of the German, Latin, and Spanish courses and a French club. We remember being in- troduced to German way back in second grade with Fraulein Offenderlein. ln ninth grade we were given the option to continue in three different foreign languages. Those who took Latin will remember the banquet with both slaves and masters running around in thongs and make-shift Togas. The two big fes- tivities of every year for Spanish classes are the trip to New York for a play, a lavish dinner and breaking the pinata at Christmas. German students will remem- ber the Kopfhorer, or headsets, So Sind Die Deutschen and the Christmas banquet in the library. The French Club, started in the spring of '76, is another encouragement for students to reach out to other worlds. Foreign Languages 99 BUSINESS . . . AN OUTLOO J 4 S 100 B f N X! mx N .' Working with income tax and FICA taxes prepares the people for prob- lems they will meet after they begin working. Timed writings to improve typing ability and dictation ex- ercises, the favorite of the devoted shorthand stu- dent, are a few of the practical skills developed by the business department. Accounting is another course that prepares students for the business world. The culmination of all this training is Office Practice which utilizes all the skills from filing to operation of various business machines that have been gained from all the different courses of the business curriculum. Mini- courses gave us experience in a wide range of activities. Child development, interior decorating, sewing, meal planning and preparing, and home nursing are a few of the phases covered by these courses. The skills we have gained in home economics will certainly prove of practical value to us in our future lives. Rohrbach DR. WALTER . ROHRBACH Dr. Walter A. Rohrbach, after 41 years of service in education, is retiring as Superintendent of the Conrad Weiser School District. For his many years of dedication to the people in our school system, we gladly dedicate the 1977 Weicon to him. After graduating from Boyertown High School, Dr. Rohrbach attended Kutztown State College and received his bachelor's degree in 1936. He taught for 13 years at Bethany School of Heidelberg Township. Meanwhile, he achieved his Master of Education from Pennsylvania State University. After 13 more years, Dr. Rohrbach returned to the Conrad Weiser Area, in 1962, as Superintendent of the school system. In 1972, he completed his doctorate at Temple University. Throughout his career, he has dedicated himself to meeting the needs of people. This is why he set for himself the goal of becoming chief administrator of a school. ln that position he could help all the people that make a school system a success, instead of just a few students. In 15 years of heading Conrad Weiser, Dr. Rohrbach has spent many, many hours every week planning to better our school and trying to provide the means for the best. He takes pride in assuming the responsibility for planning the fine Womelsdorf Elementary Building and the continuously improved, massive athletic field. Dr. Rohrbach holds his fondest memories of the people which make up a school--the people that were pleasant, interested, helpful, and dedicated to doing a good job. He will remember those that gave more than they had to give. Dr. Rohrbach has dedicated himself to more than just Conrad Weiser, he has also been active out- side ofthe school. Besides being a member of the American Association of School Administrators and the Berks County representative on the Executive Board of the Pennsylvania Association of School Administrators and other professional honors, he is involved in community affairs too. He was Borough Secretary of Womelsdorf for nine years and he was one of the organizers of the Womelsdorf- Robesonia joint Water Authority. He is a member and past master of the Williamson Lodge 545307, F.84A.M. in Womelsdorf and is a past president of the Robesonia Rotary Club. He has worked with the United Fund of Berks County and is a member of the Zion United Church of Christ. In the future, Dr. and Mrs. Rohrbach plan to travel to take a good look at the many places they have quickly traveled through. Dr. Rohrbach, a lover of nature, would like to add to his enormous slide collection scenes from such places as jackson Hole, the Grand Tetons, Southern Colorado, and the Canadian Rockies. He would also like to take up woodworking and to continue to play golf. Dr. Rohrbach, thank you for the many things you gave to Conrad Weiser, and to the years, for your concern, for the improvement, for giving all that you had to give. For this great service and devotion we dedicate this yearbook to you. Dr. Walter A. Despite finishing the season in second last place, the team had only eleven goals scored against them, four of these occurring in the first two games. Competition was very tough, but the Weiserettes earned a solid reputation as a spoiler. The team scored a total of seven goals all season, Donna Lamm was personally responsible for four. The members of this squad run no home meets. All meets are run in the Philadelphia area in various college field houses. Our boys get to compete against some of the best athletes in the Greater Philadelphia Area. Some of the boys run outside all winter, while others use the halls at Conrad Weiser for training. He feels the 76-77 squad is the best balanced team he's coached in the last nine years. As in the past, the team travelled across the county line to participate in the Donegal Christmas Tournament. In team effort they placed fourth, with five members earning individual honors. Chuck Clark, a competi- tor in the 112 lb. weight class, was the Scouts' only first place finisher. As a team, the cheerleaders have greatly helped boost the spirit at Conrad Weiser, and they should be commended for all their efforts and a job well-done. A cheerleader must persevere through- out the season and show that she is behind the team so others will also show their support. With the help of makeup, scenery, pro- perties, prompting, stage crew, costumes, tickets, and publicity committees, the backbone of the Drama Club, the cast provided an entertaining two evenings for a not-so-full house. Those involved or spectators will remember Rolenkov's noticeably pasted on chest hair, Depinna's leopard costume, Essie's ballet dance, the drunk Gay, Rheba's eggs that done fell in the sink, and Toni and Alice's decision to get married. 152 Drama Clubs . Every year, the Society sponsors one of the few dress down dances that the school offers, the NHS Hoedown. The most memorable experience of every Society member is the solemn induction ceremony. This year's induction featured a torchbearer guiding the. way for the new members of the National Honor Society, the future contributors to the society of the world. 154 National Honor Society CADEMIC ACHIEVERS 84 LEADERS 5 'O 97 v aff? i Y X K x M9 i yi DKWQE' , Wagner, jeffrey Marshall Craig Mucher, Brian Umberger, Larry Baker, Karl Nagle. REPRESENTATIVES This year's student council had many new and different ideas. Examples of this are a designated smoking area, the construction of an outdoor sign, and Spirit Week. The Council also sponsored and planned this year's Christmas Party. S200 dol- lars was contributed to the For- eign Exchange Program this year. The alumni Tea was attended by many former Conrad Weiser stu- dents. The Student Council is a major benefactor in this year's yearbook, and all the members are looking forward to an ex- citing Field Day. Activities 159 WEICGN PRODUCI From the first PSB sale to the last deadline, the Weicon staff worked many long hours com- piling the Memories of 77. New members of the staff soon became acquainted with terms such as pica , cropper , and 3R . There is more work involved in producing a yearbook than one would first suspect. The yearbook business staff works on the PSB's and handles the ordering and distributing of the books. The rest of the staff does the actual laying out of the pages. Copy must be written, proofread, and typed onto copy pages. Photos of the subject are selected and cropped to fit the page. The entire layout is then drawn onto 3R Layout paper, In laying out a page, problems frequently arise. What is the name of this per- son? cries a bewildered staffer working on a group picture. Agonizing moments are spent on pictures that don't quite fit into the layout. Above it all hangs the one thing yearbook per- sonnel fear the most: The Deadline. Somehow, by the end of February, the yearbook is completed. The advisors to the staff are Mr. Thomas Alexander, Mr. Thomas jenkins, and Mrs. Sarah Laffredo. Editors are Wendy Guistwite and Karen Hoppman. 160 Yearbook HE MEMORIES OF '77 on Staff: FRONT ROW: Karen Hoppman, Lucinda Firestine, Wendy Guistwite, Barby Hartranft, Katzaman, Renee Bashore, Pete Fisher.
